(BNFPD) BASIC NORMS FOR THE FORMATION OF PERMANENT DEACONS and (DMLPD) DIRECTORY FOR THE MINISTRY AND LIFE OF PERMANENT DEACONS CONGREGATION FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION CONGREGATION FOR THE CLERGY LIBRERIA EDITRICE VATICANA VATICAN CITY 1998 CONGREGATION FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION CONGREGATION FOR THE CLERGY JOINT DECLARATION AND INTRODUCTION JOINT DECLARATION The permanent Diaconate, restored by the Second Vatican Council, in complete continuity with ancient Tradition and the specific decision of the Council of Trent, has flourished in these last decades in many parts of the Church — with promising results, especially for the urgent missionary work of new evangelisation. The Holy See and many Episcopates, in promoting this ecclesial experience, have continually afforded norms and guidelines for the life and formation of deacons. The growth of the permanent Diaconate, however, now gives rise to a need for a certain unity of direction and clarification of concepts, as well as for practical encouragement and more clearly defined pastoral objectives. The total reality of the Diaconate — embracing its fundamental doctrinal vision, discernment of vocation, as well as the life, ministry, spirituality and formation of deacons — calls for a review of the journey thus far made, so as to arrive at a global vision of this grade of Sacred Orders corresponding to the desire and intention of the Second Vatican Council. Following the publication of the Ratio fundamentalis institutionis sacerdotalis on priestly formation and the Directory on the Ministry and Life of Priests, the Congregation for Catholic Education and the Congregation for the Clergy, completing the treatment of what pertains to the Diaconate and the Priesthood, the objects of their competence, now wish to devote particular consideration to the subject of the permanent Diaconate. -

THE SARUM USE By the Reverend Canon Professor J. Robert Wright Historiographer of the Episcopal Church he Sarum Use” is the name applied to the particular rendering of divine worship in the English Church that was developed at “T Salisbury, in Wiltshire, from the early thirteenth century and then gradually spread to become at least by the fourteenth century the finest local expression of the Western or Roman Rite in England up to the Reformation. “Sarum” is the abbreviation for Sarisburium, the Latin word for Salisbury, which was and is both a city and a diocese in south central England. The Use of Sarum, then, was a rather exuberant, elaborate, beautiful, and especially well arranged adaptation of the Western or Roman Rite that was gradually adopted by most of the rest of England as well as much of Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and even some places on the continent. Indeed, the first Sarum Missal to be printed was at Paris in 1487, then Basle 1489, Rouen 1492, Venice 1494, etc., and not at London until 1498. (The General Theological Seminary has two Sarum Missals, one printed at Paris in 1555 and one at Rouen in 1508). Origins The Norman Conquest (1066) ushered in not only a widespread building and rebuilding of cathedrals and churches on a larger scale and in Romanesque architecture but also continental influences tending towards the centralization of both liturgy and monastic customs. Even earlier this could be seen in the Regularis Concordia of c. 970, and after the Conquest in the Monastic Constitutions of Archbishop Lanfranc. Parallel and subsequent to these developments there seems to have been a need felt for a certain clarity and fixity in liturgical matters at the secular (non-monastic) cathedrals. -

VICAR VICTORIA: WRITING THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY FICTION A Dissertation Presented for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree The University of Mississippi Rachel Elizabeth Cason May 2019 Copyright © 2019 by Rachel Elizabeth Cason All rights reserved ABSTRACT Vicar Victoria: Writing the Church of England in Nineteenth-Century Fiction shows how the organizing force of the Anglican Church and the figure of the Anglican clergyman were used to interrogate social, legal, and historical developments in nineteenth-century fiction. The project outlines how authors reacted to events such as Pluralism reform, the opening of training schools for clergy, and the Oxford Movement. There was a growing importance of institutions (including new physical buildings and Anglican reform movements). Further, the clergy, pushed by the increased expectation to modernize and professionalize, became a specialist career, with raised training and performance requirements. As a result of these internal changes, we find the Anglican Church establishment in a state of flux across the nineteenth century: working to adapt itself to a new normal where Anglicanism as the dominant organizing force in people's lives could no longer be taken for granted. -

It is not intended to be in any sense an exhaustive treatise, and it is purposely very elementary, nor does it contain any- thing new, or more than a very little that is not a mere commonplace to almost any priest, or even nun of an old Order, of the Latin Church who at Carleton University on July 15, 2015 knows his or her business properly. The services of the Latin Church may be classified under the following heads: 1. The Divine Office, that is to say, the Order of the weekly recitation of the Psalter, with accom- panying canticles, anthems, hymns, prayers, lessons, etc., at the Canonical Hours of Mattins (called also Nodlurns and Vigils), Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline. 2. The Order of the Holy Eucharist. 3. The Order of the other Sacraments, viz., Baptism, Confirmation, Penance, Matrimony, the Unttion of the Sick, and Holy Order. 4. The Occasional Services, such as the Burial of SERVICE-BOOKS OF LATIN GHURCH. 293 the Dead, the Consecration of Churches, the Pro- fession of Religious, the Coronation of Kings, the Benediction of Abbots, and a very large number of Benedictions of various descriptions. D A Hill 19 October 2015 2 Abstract This thesis examines how the inquisitio hereticæ pravitatis (the ‘inquisition’) changed in the 14th century. It does so through a comparison of Gui’s Practica inquisitionis heretice pravitatis, and Eymerich’s Directorium inquisitorum, which are the fullest accounts of inquisitorial practice in the fourteenth century. It therefore concentrates on the Languedoc and Aragon, although wider evidence is used where possible. It points out several areas of change between these two points in the evolution of the inquisition: a) Gui’s Practica was a conservative response to a changing heresy threat, which adapted the existing methods of the successful Languedoc inquisition to meet new threats like the Beguins, Pseudo-Apostles and magicians. Eymerich, who came some 50 years later, was a systematizer and an innovator. He defined the inquisition in such a way that any heterodox thinking could be found to be heresy by an inquisitor. He also innovated in seeing the inquisition’s jurisdiction as extending over Jews (not just Jews converted to Christianity and their helpers), blasphemers and magicians. In this he was following secular trends where magicians were increasingly perceived as a problem and blasphemy was considered a serious offence; and in Aragon there had long been efforts amongst Dominicans to get more jurisdiction over Jews. -

The book is divided into two sections, historical and biographical. In the former section the aim has been to give under the name of each tune, chant, and special setting, the exact title and date of the book or other publication in which it originally appeared. This is followed by such information as has been obtainable in regard to the words for which the music was composed, the changes which it has undergone, and any other particulars of interest as to its usage and history. In a few cases, in spite of much research, it has not been found possible to name definitely the original source of the music, and in others further investigation may reveal an earlier source than cited but in each instance care has been taken that now ; every to verify the statements made, and it is believed that these may be taken as at least reliable starting-points for future research. -

Lectionary General Introduction PROLOGUE Chapter I General Principles for the Liturgical Celebration of the word of God 1. PRELIMINARIES a Importance of the word of God in a liturgical celebration 1. Vatican Council II,1 the teaching of the popes,2 and various postconciliar documents of the Roman congregations3 have already made many excellent statements about the im- portance of the word of God and about reestablishing the use of Scripture in every cel- ebration of the liturgy. The Introduction of the 1969 edition of the Order of Readings for Mass has clearly stated and briefly explained some of the more important principles.4 On the occasion of this new edition of the Order of Readings for Mass, requests have come from many quarters for a more detailed exposition of the same principles, In re- sponse, this expanded and more helpful arrangement of the Introduction first gives a general statement on the close relationship between the word of God and the liturgical celebration,5 then deals in greater detail with the word of God in the celebration of Mass, and, finally, explains the precise structure of the Order of Readings for Mass. b Terms used to refer to the word of God 2. For the sake of clear and precise language on this topic, a definition of terms might well be expected as a prerequisite. Nevertheless this Introduction will simply use the same terms employed in conciliar and postconciliar documents. Furthermore it will use ‘sacred Scripture’ and ‘word of God’ interchangeably throughout when referring to the books written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, thus avoiding any confusion of language or meaning.6 c Significance of the word of God in the liturgy 3. -
