Washington Post Peter Brant, childhood friend Peter Brant: I do consider him a friend in the sense that we knew each other so well. But by the time that he left around 13 to go to New York Military Academy, I think that I really didn’t have much contact with him until he came back to New York and was in business for -- you know, he’s a success coming into the New York. I didn’t really see him very much, hardly at all until the ‘80s and then I kind of reconnected with him in the ‘90s and we were social friends. I played golf with him. He’d been to my house several times in the ‘90s. Michael E. Miller (Washington Post): This one here or -- Brant: No. Miller: Connecticut? Brant: No, I’d been to Mar-a-Lago, not a member there but my sister is. I was a member of the golf course that he has here in Palm Beach but only because it was a corporate membership. And my partner at that time, who is my cousin, who’d been my partner for many, many years and whose father was my father’s partner, loves to play golf and he was a member. Confident. Incorrigible. Bully: Little Donny was a lot like candidate Don... https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/young-donald-trump-mili... As a 5-year-old, the boy followed his babysitter on an urban safari, descending into a sewer that was under construction beneath New York City. The light fading, the sitter grew concerned that the boy would panic. But little Donny Trump kept walking into the gathering darkness. In elementary school, Donny impressed classmates with his athleticism, shenanigans and refusal to acknowledge mistakes, even one so trivial as misidentifying a popular professional wrestler. No matter his pals’ ridicule, one recalled, he doubled down, insisting wrestler Antonino Rocca’s name was “Rocky Antonino.” At the military academy where he attended high school, Donny grew taller, more muscular and tougher. Struck with a broomstick during a fight, he tried to push a fellow cadet out a second-floor window, only to be thwarted when two other students intervened. Long before he attained vast wealth and far-reaching fame, Donald J. Trump left an indelible impression in the prosperous Queens neighborhood where he evolved from a mischievous, incorrigible boy into a swaggering young man. He was Trump in miniature, an embryonic version of the bombastic, flamboyant candidate who has dominated the 2016 presidential race, more than three dozen of his childhood friends, classmates and neighbors said in interviews. Even Trump has acknowledged the similarities between himself as an adult and when he was the boy whom friends alternately referred to as “Donny,” “The Trumpet” and “Flat Top” (for his hair). “When I look at myself in the first grade and I look at myself now, I’m basically the same,” the 70-year-old presumptive Republican nominee once told a biographer.

  • Basquiat at the Brant Foundation: “It All Depends Who You Are on What Street”
Basquiat at The Brant Foundation: “It all depends who you are on what street” The Brant Foundations newest East Village location opens with an inaugural exhibition neither faint in heart or grandiosity, with nearly 70 works of none other than Jean-Michel Basquiat. With that many Basquiat’s in one place, the Brant is home to a show that is as rare as it is prolific. Jean-Michel Basquiat was an emblematic figure of the Neo-Expressionist movement, but more so the embodiment of the brave artist versus the art world. In a New York Times Critics Pick review, Martha Schwendener says it best: though Basquiat was “embraced by a popular audience…he often felt treated like a faux-primitive genius, which he found racist and demeaning. And yet, this seemed to fuel his work — and the anger in it — toward greater heights.” In his short lifetime, dying from an accidental overdose at just 27 years old, Basquiat lived to the mere brink of his hopeful career, but never won the attention of grand scale Museums. Basquiat’s work was far grander than said museums, albeit controversial, it sustained fluid commentary that fought racial and social injustice, the best way he knew how. However, private collectors, such as Peter Brant himself, jumped on the bandwagon of Basquiat before it was too late, acquiring an extensive collection of the artist’s lifetime of work. For that, we can grant Brant tasteful credit. As for the thoughtful presentation of this exhibition, not so quick. One can sense the egregious grandeur they are getting themselves into before they enter The Brant Foundation, newly renovated art space and more importantly, new home to an extensive retrospective of none other than Jean-Michel Basquiat.

H-Haiti Black Ghosts: Basquiat’s “Defacement” at the Guggenheim by Tiana REID Discussion published by Marlene Daut on Saturday, July 20, 2019 Black Ghosts: Basquiat’s “Defacement” at the Guggenheim by Tiana Reid Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Death of Michael Stewart, 1983, acrylic and marker on sheet rock, 34 by 40 inches. Collection Nina Clemente, New York. (c) Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Licensed by Artestar, New York. Jean-Michel Basquiat is too often under-curated. Considerthe bland, context-less survey on view earlier this year at the Brant Foundation’s New York space, a private museum project of President Trump’s childhood friend Peter Brant, or the Brooklyn Museum’s 2018“One Basquiat,” an “exhibition” consisting of a single $110.5-million-dollar painting. An easy reliance on the aura of this famous black artist with a high market value and a fatal heroin addiction often takes the place of any insightful narration. His name is enough to draw in hordes. “Basquiat’s ‘Defacement’: The Untold Story,” an exhibition on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York through November 6, centers on the artist’s 1983 paintingDefacement (The Death of Michael Stewart), which depicts an instance of police violence that occurred in September of that year. After allegedly tagging a wall in the East Village’s First Avenue subway station, Michael Stewart, a twenty-five-year-old black artist from Brooklyn, was beaten by the New York City Transit Police, put into a chokehold, and handcuffed to his bed while comatose at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.
