Remembering and anticipation are the key themes for November, as you will see in the Church calendar. On the 1^^ of November at the service of All Souls at St Peter's we will be remembering and thanking God for thosewe have loved who have died. This is a very special service when the names ofour loved onesare read out and weare able to light a candle forthem and receive a pieceof Rosemary herb, the symbol of love and remembrance, to take home.

The Remembrance Sunday Service, when we remember and honour all those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom, will be held at Holy Trinity this year. During the Service the names of those who gave their lives from our villages during the first and second worldwars and more recent conflicts will be read out. Although parking ifor this Service should not be a problem. Ifyou have any concerns please ring the church office on 01489 877400.

Atthe end of Novemberwe beginthe four week period of Adventwhen we anticipate and prepare ourselves to remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. So on the SO**^ of November, we will mark it inthe usual waywith our Advent Carol Service at HolyTrinity, accompanied by the Meon Valley Band. Ialways look forward to preparing for this Service, part of which is lighting hundreds of candles and lamps that give Holy Trinity such a gorgeous Advent glow. We are so blessed to have so many talented instrumentalists who join us on this evening and Iwould like to thank them ahead of the event. Fra Wells has said that he and Sue will be in charge of the mulled wine as usual and Trevor will be making the mince pies, and Gingerbread men for the children. Norman will be making hot chocolate for the children too and not just powder sort but real Hot Chocolate drink made with real Chocolate. I might have some tool 11

Thinking of evening services I draw your attention to the Taize Service at Holy Trinity on the of October at 6.00. This style of worship comes from the Taize community in France and is proving to be very meaningful and popular throughout the diocese. Ifyou haven't been to a Taize Service before, do consider coming.

Earlyin September Iattended the annual Diocesan Conference. As usual it was good to catch up with other clergy that Idon't get a chance to see very often and to listen to some excellent speakers. One of the speakers was Loretta Minghella, chief executive of Christian Aid. She spoke so movingly of how she connects her Christian faith with the charity's work on the front line and of all the support that was being given to those fleeing from war torn areas of our world. She summed up her thinking by saying, "Some callthem refugees, some call them migrants. Icall them mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters and brothers".

With every blessing in Christ Jesus

(Please note that non members are welcome to attend our meetings which manage to draw some most Interesting speakers. They normally start at 7 pm In the Droxford Village Hall).

Our guest speaker at our September meeting was Commander David Chllds RN, CBE who gave a fascinating talk on the National Memorial Arboretum In Staffordshire. He explained that the Idea of a 'living memorial' paying tribute to all who served came to him following a visit to Arlington In Washington, Virginia, where the United States commemorates the fallen from Its Armed Services. On his return flight to UK, he read a DallyTelegraph article on the National Forest In the Midlands and set to work to see If the two Ideas could be linked. Despite having no money, no land, no tree planting experience and no fund raising expertise, he succeeded, producing a memorial of livingtrees, sculptures and the Armed Forces monument to all those who died In the service of their country. Including those "shot at dawn" In the First World War. It was a remarkable achievement by a visionary man, and we were privileged to hear his story.

Events for the remainder of 2015 Include the Annual Dinner at Corhampton Golf Club on Monday 12^*^ October, and the Remembrance Sunday service which will be held In St Mary & AllSaints Droxford on Sunday November, beginning at 1050 to allow for the Act of Remembrance at 1100. The Annual General Meeting will take place on the following day, Monday 9^"^ November when the programme for 2016 will be discussed. Hackney and Bishop's Waltham Deaneries Link News Autumn 2015

This year there the Link has been very active with a particularly happy visit from St James' Clapton in July with lunch and an evening service at St Barnabas Swanmore and a visit to the Newtown Fete in the afternoon. In August we were able to use our reserves made up from contributions from the parishes to send an extra donation to St James', to The Priory and the Winter Night Shelter which have been gratefully acknowledged. Important news from Hackney includes the appointment by the of two new Area Bishops with special responsibility for fostering the outreach which has been such a significant part of the London Diocese's life over the past few years. Rob Wickham, at present Area Dean of Hackney and vicar of St John's Hackney is to be the Bishop of Edmonton and , vicar of St Paul's Shadwell (and the son of Tony and Wendy Thorpe here in Bishop's Waltham) is to be the with special responsibility for church planting across all traditions of the church.

Hackney Christmas Collection 2015

This is such an important part of our churches link with Hackney and i can't stress enough how much what we send is appreciated and how it makes a difference to the recipients. It is difficultto draw up a comprehensive list of what's needed and the best thing is for you to think for a few moments, especially in your prayers, of what you would like to have if you were without a home or income in a great city. Remember that out of date tins etc cannot be sent, nor can items that might leak or break.

A small selection of possible items could include : * Food - o Corned beef, tuna, custard rice pudding, fruit, soup, pasta, rice, tea bags, o If you have access to any catering sizes of food remember that in their various enterprises the Hackney churches are normallyproviding food for twenty or thirty people at a time. * Toiletries o Razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, shower gel, small packets of tissues. * Clothes - * ***piease remember we can't handle cleared wardrobes of senior citizens*** but need items for young men and women o Boxershorts, casual jackets, woolly hats, baseball caps, trainers, gloves, scarves o Also clean bedding and sleeping bags * Money - as with all support activities money is always very welcome to enable flexible action - cheques shouldbe made payable to 'Bishop's Waltham Deanery' and given to Suewho will passthem on to the Treasurer * It has been suggested that some people would like to pass on their Winter Fuel allowance to one of the Hackney Churches which would allow them to claim Gift Aid on the donation. Anyone who would like to do this should make a cheque payable either to Hackney Winter Night Shelter or to St Saviour's Priory EZ 8NS

Ijust wanted to write and thank everyone in our villages, who supported the fundraising that enabled me to travel to Uganda. We flew to Entebbe Airport in Uganda via Dubai on July 13'^, 2015 to start our adventure. The two airports couldn't be more different. Dubai was so wealthy and slick whereas Entebbe was old- fashioned and bustling. As you land in Entebbe you can see the carcasses of old planes littering the edge of the runway - it doesn't fill you with confidence! We travelled from Entebbe to the village of Kanjobe. We lived in a village house and each day we spent time on community projects with the villagers - they made us incredibly welcome. Wherever we went a posse of village children would follow us. We decorated t-shirts and text-books with them and played all sorts of games. Some of the money that we raised went towards sponsoring animals for the village and we had to attend ceremonies where the village elders formally thanked us - we felt like royalty!

What really struck me was that the villagers of Kanjobe have so little and yet they're _ so happy. We felt really sad to leave the village as we'd made some great friends and in fact my = friend Emma and I have been invited to attend a wedding in 2 years time!

After Kanjobe, we spent a day travelling to the Queen Elizabeth National Park - it was incredibly beautiful and I was lucky to see lions, elephants, crocodiles and lots of other animals in the wild. We then travelled on to Kampala - we travelled through the slums. It was indescribable -1 have never seen such poverty. It was very different from Kanjobe - they were poor, but their living conditions were good and they had plenty of food to eat. In the city you could see how little food they have and the living conditions were awful. It had a profound effect on all of us.

My trip was a full of contrasts -1 will never forget my time in Uganda. It has made me want to travel more and it's opened my eyes to the reality of other people's lives.

I couldn't have gone without your help though. Iwas really touched by your kindness and generosity - from those who attended my Murder Mystery Fundraiser to the people who popped envelopes with money in through our door. I would like to especially thank the Parish Magazine and the Fund for the Labouring Poor for their generous donations. I do feel so lucky that I live in such a special and close community - we're not so different from Kanjobe after all.

Antiques Roadshow! A programme that we love for two reasons; when you discover that you have been using a priceless Ming Vase as a flower pot for years, and when you find that photograph of your long lost Great Grandfather, completing the stories that your Grandma told youI Soberton Guides have their own Antiques Roadshow moment (and no, it's not a Ming Vasel) As with all great stories, its starts in a public house.

As I was working behind the bar, an old friend walks in and enquires how I ami "My kids are brilliant, but I manage to keep my sanity by helping with the local Girlguide Unit! It gets me out of the house!" (Something that all mothers appreciate!) "Girlguidinglll" he replies. "Did you know that they use to camp in our field years ago?! And we have something that was left in the house for years which might interest you "

Ladiesand Gentlemen, a little background information first! Avillager named Helen Stiggants was instrumental in the creation of Soberton and Newtown Guide Unit in 1948. She devoted her life to Guiding using her land at Russells Farm to host camping adventures for the girls. Sadly she passed away in 1977 and sincethen the farm passed from the Stiggantsfamily to the Neals in 1991.Surprisingly a small boxwas found in the dank and dirtycellar, too precious to be thrown away, and nowthe content of that boxhas come home to us, kindly donated back to our unit by Geoff and Margarita Neal. Now displayed in a frame, surrounding a photograph ofthe old Guide Unit, are original badges datingfrom the 1950's including Patrol, Promise and Interest Badges, as well as a 1953Coronation badge. Our most exciting item is most definitely the brass flag standard which was uncovered in the corner of the barn in a most unsightly condition!

We would liketo invite you allto a special Ploughman^s lunch on the 21^* November at Rookesbury hall where we will be revealing our priceless treasures and retelling ourvillage GirlGuidingstory! Mandy Ckeve 'Tawny OwC, 1^SoSerton €C STewtown (Brownies

We are a small, friendly, village school in the MeonValley • Graded Dutstanding' at our last OFSTED • Maximum of 25 children per class • Excellentend of KeyStage One results • Earlybirds Pre-school on-site.0"aded 'Outstanding' June 2015 Open morning, Tuesday 20th October, 9.30-11.30am Visit our website; www.newtownsoberton.hanCs.sch.uk for further information

The children at Newtown Soberton Infant School have returned to school keen and eager to learn after the long summer break. We are delighted to welcome our new children in Early Years who are settling in well to Hedgehogs class and school life.

This term Year Early Years are enjoying learning about traditional Nursery Rhymes, whilst Year 1 are basing their learning around the story of the Little Red Hen and will visit Barn farm in Hipley to find out how food goes 'from field to fork'. Year 2 are learning how the RNLI provide vital support to all who use the sea.

As a small school we are always looking for ways to build and strengthen our links with the local community. We already enjoy being part of both village fetes and have strong links with our church but we feel that there are plenty of other opportunities to involve the local community in school life and for us to become more involved in community events.

'Expert' visitors from our local community are always very welcome in school as they can help bring a topic or theme to iife. Please let us know ifyou have a skill that you can offer or an idea as to how your local community group could become involved with the school or how we can become involved with your community group or event! We are also looking for volunteers from the local community who would like to come into school and support children with their learning. We already have a small number of local residents who kindly donate some of their time each week to the school which has proven to have a huge impact on progress.

There are a number of ways that you can help:

• We have a number of interventions that we use to support reading and maths skills which have had proven impact on progress in a relatively short period of time. However they are reliant on adult support and we would welcome anyone who can volunteer half an hour or an hour of their time each week, either at the beginning or the end of the day to provide this regular support. • We would welcome regular volunteers who are willing to come in for a morning or an afternoon each week to support work in class. • We also need volunteers who would be happy (with training) to support children to change their library books on a weekly basis.

Ifyou would be interested in becoming a volunteer please contact the school office on 01329 833161. We also currently have a space on our governing body and would really like to fill the space with a member of the local community who would like to be involved in making decisions about the future of their local school. Perhaps you attended the school yourself and would be interested In finding out more about life 'behind the scenes'?

by Denis May

I have been invited to exhibit two of my illustrations of Wilfred Owen's "War Poems" as part of the Centenary Remembrancetide in Holy Trinity in November.

They are: Firstly - "The Parable of the Old Man and the Young". Owen's poem closely follows the biblical account of the story (Genesis 22:1-19) of Abraham offering his son Isaac as a sacrifice of obedience to God. The poet turns the story round dramatically with the final line saying, "But the old man would not so but slew his son. And half the seed of Europe, one by one."

The second illustration is to the poem 'Futility' with the evocative line - "...Was it for this the clay grew tall?"

(Photo provided to the History Society by Lt Cdr Jonathan Band RN Oct 1980 - CO. Aug 79 - Apr 81)

HMS Soberton was built at Fleetlands shipyard, Gosport and launched 20 November 1956. She was decommissioned in March 1991.

She was a Minesweeper of the 'TON' class, Length 153ft, beam 28ft, tonnage 360, speed 16 knots, complement of 37). The design of the class was led by the shipyard John I. Thornycroft & Company and numbered 119 vessels. They were intended to meet the threat of seabed mines laid in shallow coastal waters, rivers, ports and harbours.

HMS Soberton was uniquely the only coastal minesweeper to be employed throughout her commissions in the Fishery Protection Squadron. They can justifiably claim to be the oldest Squadron in the Royal Navy. As early as 1379 Yarmouth established its own armed fishery protection vessels.

The Squadron and the Task

In terms of numbers of ships the Fishery Protection Squadron is the largest Squadron in the Royal Navy. These ships include Mine-sweepers, Fast Patrol Craft and purpose built Offshore Patrol Vessels. The main task of the Squadron is to patrol the Fishery Limits of the United Kingdom - an area which covers over 200,000 square miles and extends up to 200 miles from the coast line. Within this area lie some of the richest fishing grounds in the world-an attraction for many foreign fishermen. It is one task of the squadron to ensure that only vessels from countries which have agreements with the United Kingdom are within the area and to ensure that all others remain outside the limits. At any time there may be more than 600 vessels, both British and foreign, legitimatelyfishing within the limits. The Fishery Protection Squadron must monitor this fishing effort, administer the laws and international agreements governing Sea Fisheries, and collect detailed information from individual vessels, concerning the fishing activity. The laws, agreements and information concern catch rates, types of gear, size of nets, methods of fishing, size of fish, quotas of fish. It is this detail gathered at sea, which forms part of the raw material on which the Government negotiates fishing agreements with other nations, formulates conservation measures and determines Fishing Law. Whilst the majority of fishermen are law-abiding and fishing legitimately, there is no doubt that the presence of a warship acts as a deterrent and makes would-be offenders think twice. Should a skipper be encountered engaging in an illegal activity he and his vessel will be detained and escorted to a UK Port. Once convicted, a skipper faces very substantial fines and is liable to forfeit his expensive gear and catch. During such incidents the Commanding Officer ofthe warship is in close touch with the fishery protection 'nerve centre' at Rosyth in Scotland, through which information is exchanged betweenthe ship, aircraft, civilian District Fishery Inspectors, Coastguards and the fishermen themselves. Sometimes different methods of fishing can lead to friction and incidents break out between fishermen resulting in a call for naval intervention to restore law and order. The work of the Squadron is complex calling for a high level of knowledge about fishing and energy matters and a veryhigh standard of seamanship. Ships are •continuously on patrols, lasting six weeks or more, on every day of the year, in all weather conditions.

The Ships

The Offshore Patrol Vessels are all named afterislands off the United Kingdom. They are fitted with an arrayof modern communications with which they can maintain constant communications with fishing vessels and both naval and civilian authorities ashore. Navigational equipment includes a computer, to enable them to operate with pin point accuracy at considerable distance from land. The Minesweepers belong to the "Ton" Class all of which are named after United Kingdom villages with names ending in "ton". Each protection vessel carries inflatable rubber craft with powerful outboard engines in order to transfer boarding parties to fishing boats at sea. The minesweepers take part in national and international exercises and carry out training while on patrol, to ensure that they are always capable of carrying out their wartime task. Other units of the Royal Navy, including helicopters, hovercraft and major ships, such as Frigates, are also immediately available to reinforce shipsofthe Fishery Protection. In addition aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Air Force fly regular routine patrols to maintain an overall fisheries surveillance fromthe air, and they work in closeco-operation with the Fishery Protection Squadron at sea. Lack ofsuitable and affordable housing provision is one ofthe biggest issues today facing Hampshire and indeed the whole country. Across the UK, families, and particularly younger people and those on lower incomes, struggle to get on the housing ladder with many priced out ofthe market by the forces oftoo much demand and not enough supply. Nowhere is this problem more acute than in the rural villages ofthe south east, especially when it comes to affordable and family homes. We have some ofthe most picturesque countryside, good local amenities and the best weather in the UK - so it's not at all surprisingthat many people want to live in our part ofthe world. So, many people spend years in rented housing while they try to come up with an ever-increasing deposit to buy their first home. The problem also causes dislocation when younger people, who have spent their whole lives as part ofa particular community, can only afford to buy a house many miles away and this means less social cohesion too. Add in an ageing population, and trends like these can damage our villages and rural communities. It makes them less diverse and less vibrant. But what can we do about it? Bluntly, there is really only one solutionto this problem and it is never universally popular,we simplyhave to build more homes, and particularlyaffordable ones. Now, I fully understand that many ofyou may have misgivingsabout this. Like me, you cannot fail to have seen the increased traffic problems and the strain on our infrastructure over the last two decades. But when housing development is built sympatheticallywith existing homes and fits in with the communities, it can be a real boost for the local economy and village life. We are quite fortunate in the Meon Valley to have many good developments. I remember in 2011 cutting the first sod on such a development for ten affordable homes in West Meon. The homesare now an integralpart of the village community, providingextra provisionfor people with strong local connections. This scheme, and others like it, shows how villages can embrace the challenges of expanding without losing their identity.

The Meon Valley Flower Club recently gained great recognition for their outstanding design in Winchester Cathedral at the Nationally acclaimed "Cascades Flower Festival"

In June WinchesterCathedral had many thousands ofvisitors from all over the UK and beyond for a flower extravaganza like no other. The Wessex and Jersey Area of NAFAS, to which The Meon Valley FlowerClubbelong, took up the challenge to fill the historic building with outstanding floral design. Prior to the event, the design leadersaid," Prepareto be enchanted and enthralledby majestic flowerarrangements and installations cascading through the cathedral, inspiring awe and wonder" his words did not disappoint! AlthoughThe MeonValley FlowerClub is not a very a large club comparedto some in the area, their reputationfor outstanding design and high qualitywork has alreadybeen recognised.

Chosen to create one ofthe largest designs in the cathedral, that honoured " Diver Bill" William Walker who saved the cathedral from sinking in the 1900's, the stuiming design reached over 5m in length and over 2m at its widest point.

The design, which represented water, flowedwith breathtaking beauty along this smallarea of the cathedral floor from a cascade which started above the statues, flowing from 4 meters high, linking into the floor design seamlesslywith the flow ofwhite Phalaenopsis Orchids. Hundreds offlowers were used within the arrangement, and from a distance the stunning swathes of Delphinium flowers in shades of blue drewyou in, andwith closerinspection the design rewarded the eye, not only with a collection of wonderful flowers including Agapanthus, Aconitum, Album, Scabious, but also the incredible attention to detail. Swathesof wood, rosemary, and rolled leaveswere foundamongstthe flowers, alongwith glass balls, crystals, succulents and orchids.

The general publicappreciated its splendour, and the cathedral designteamwere delighted with the exhibit and the skills ofmembers ofThe Meon Valley Flower Club.

Throughout the weekfloral ambassadors were on hand to aidvisitors who wereveryimpressed by the work carried out by our local flowerclub, with many considering it to be the best design. Meon Valley Garden Club

The sun shone on everyone who came to the Summer Show held in the Meon Hall. The exhibits looked magnificent with all the colours of summer. Outside there were activities for both adults and children. Thank you to everyone who makes this show so successful. The August evening we had our annual barbequewas also sunnyand, listening to the level of laughter, was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Norma and Peter Moore for hosting this in their field. Our luck changed for the visit to Hill House in Alresford, it rained all afternoonI Under umbrellas we managedto see the wonderful herbaceous borders and well managedvegetablegarden and then retreated for a welcome cuppa and cake. Our next visit is to Fairbank in Alton. Will it rain or shine? We are now planning next year's programme, we always welcome new members so have a think about joining.
