    PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year. Setting the Scene I remember very vividly visiting St Albans Abbey in the run up to Christmas in 2010. We were walking through the great nave of this imposing and very beautiful building­ dedicated to the greater glory and steadfastness of God­ majestic and awe inspiring. We took our children, who were then the ages of 6 and 3, as we felt that such a space could speak to them of the impact of God in the midst of a busy pre­Christmas shopping area. We spoke to them about the importance of remaining quiet in this space, and to respect the wider silence and atmosphere of prayer which seemed to exude all around­ an attitude which they respected in the way in which only three and six years olds can. Then to our horror, as we walked slowly down the nave, some middle aged woman in pearls, who was sitting on some makeshift stage prior to beginning a choral rehearsal, turned and very loudly told our children to shush! This was not however the welcome which we expected, and it did make me feel somewhat irritated. It did not reflect something of God’s call of everybody is welcome, and that these buildings might, just might, be about a desire for human flourishing, for He came that we might have life in all its fullness.

TOXIC PLAYGROUNDS... Looking out of her office window, head teacher Claire Fletcher of St Paul’s, Hammersmith was confronted by the most depressing of views ‐ a featureless tarmac playground framed by a concrete flyover. 'I always felt really sad for the pupils, like many inner‐city children they live in the middle of a concrete jungle and that was their outlook, not only at home but at their school as well.' said Ms Fletcher. By December 2019, St Paul's playground had been replaced with green. They now have 17 semi‐ mature trees, ivy cladding, and lots of shrubs, bushes, herbs and flowers. They have even had the odd tomato plant when a child has thrown a seed in a bed from their packed lunch which has taken root. 'It has become a really beautiful green space that the children enjoy. While the work was going on to transform it, one of the pupils said to me, 'I just can't wait to get in there and read a book under a tree.' It's great for them to think that this is somewhere to do ordinary things in an extraordinary place.' But, what is all the more extraordinary, is that this transformation is not just skin deep. As well as looking greener, the woodland playground, which was only opened in the summer, has already played a crucial role in safeguarding the pupils from potential harm.

All our faiths compel us to affirm the dignity of all human beings and to offer help to anyone in need. As people of faith, we call on your Government urgently to revise its policy towards refugees. The best of this country is represented by the generosity, kindness, solidarity and decency that Britain has at many times shown those fleeing persecution, even at times of far greater deprivation and difficulty than the present day. We rejoice in the mosaic of different faiths and British communities that we now represent. We are proud that in May 2016, in a survey by Amnesty International, 83% of Britons said they would welcome refugees into their neighbourhoods and households. In the face of the unfolding human catastrophe, there are immediate and viable steps that the Government can take to offer sanctuary to more refugees. We call on you to create safe, legal routes of travel, for example by adopting fair and humane family reunion policies for refugees. Under the present immigration rules, a British doctor of Syrian origin could not bring her parents from a refugee camp in Lebanon – even though they were refugees and she could support and house them. A Syrian child who arrived alone in the UK could not bring his parents from a refugee camp in Jordan – even if the child were recognised a refugee and even though his parents were themselves refugees. Families in these situations can currently be reunited only by resorting to desperately unsafe irregular journeys, sometimes ending in avoidable tragedies.
