THE GATHERING

The Bishop greets the people In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. All And also with you.

The Bishop introduces the liturgy. After a period of silent prayer, he says the Collect:

Almighty God, in Christ you make all things new: transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD First Reading: I Corinthians 1.1-9

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind— just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you— so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

At the end the reader may say Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All Thanks be to God.

Stand to sing

Gradual Hymn 349: Come, let us join our cheerful songs

Turn to face the gospel procession as we sing the acclamation. All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

THE GOSPEL: John 1.29-42

When the Gospel is announced the says The Lord be with you All and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All Glory to you, O Lord.

The next day he saw Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.’ And John testified, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.’ The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of God!’ The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas’ (which is translated Peter).

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON: The Bishop of Edmonton

THE LITURGY OF INITIATION The candidates for baptism and confirmation are presented to the congregation, and the Bishop asks Jemima

Jemima, do you wish to be baptized? I do.

He asks the parents and godparents

Parents and godparents, the Church receives Jemima and Eline with joy. Today we are trusting God for their growth in faith. Will you pray for them, draw them by your example into the community of faith and walk with them in the way of Christ? With the help of God, we will.

In baptism Jemima and Eline begin their journey in faith. You speak for them today. Will you care for them, and help them to take their place within the life and worship of Christ’s Church? With the help of God, we will.

The Bishop asks the other candidates Ana, Jeanette and Carolina, have you been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit? I have.

Are you ready with your own mouth and from your own heart to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ? I am.

The Bishop addresses the whole congregation

Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome these candidates and uphold them in their life in Christ? All With the help of God, we will.

THE DECISION

The Bishop and candidates gather at the font while we sing Let all who are thirsty come. Let all who wish receive the water of life freely. Amen, come Lord Jesus. Amen, come Lord Jesus. Taizé chants 2012-13, no. 67

Beside the light of the Paschal candle, the Bishop addresses all the candidates and their sponsors

In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them.

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ.

The sign of the cross is made on the baptismal candidates’ forehead with these words Jemima/Eline, Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

The Bishop says May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. All Amen. The Bishop stands before the water of baptism and says

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ was baptised in the river Jordan, we thank you for the gift of water to cleanse us and revive us. Saving God, All Give us life.

We thank you that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the Promised Land. Saving God, All Give us life.

We thank you that through the deep waters of death you brought your Son, and raised him to life in triumph. Saving God, All Give us life.

+Bless this water, that your servants who are washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and in his resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Saving God, All Give us life.

Send your Holy Spirit upon them, bring them to new birth in the household of faith and raise them with Christ to full and eternal life; for all might, majesty, authority and power are yours, now and for ever. All Amen.

The Bishop addresses the congregation Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess together with these candidates the faith of the Church.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father? All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? All I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? All I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Bishop addresses Jemima by name, saying Jemima, is this your faith? This is my faith.

The Bishop pours water on each of them, saying Jemima/Eline, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.

May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. All Amen.

The candidates for confirmation and first Holy Communion sign themselves with the cross using the baptismal water.

Then the Bishop says Almighty God, we thank you for our fellowship in the household of faith with all who have been baptized into your name. Keep us faithful to our baptism, and so make us ready for that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. All Amen.

Hymn 138: Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire During the singing of this hymn, the bishop and the candidates gather at the place of confirmation.

THE CONFIRMATION

The Bishop stands before those who are to be confirmed, and says Our help is in the name of the Lord All who has made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord All now and for ever. Amen.

The Bishop extends his hands towards those to be confirmed and says

Almighty and ever-living God, you have given these your servants new birth in baptism by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them all their sins. Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them: the Spirit of wisdom and understanding; the Spirit of counsel and inward strength; the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and let their delight be in the fear of the Lord. All Amen.

The Bishop addresses each candidate by name Jeanette/Carolina, God has called you by name and made you his own.

He then lays his hand on the head of each and says Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit. All Amen.

He then anoints each one with the oil of chrism, and says Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.

The Bishop extends his hands towards Ana and says God of mercy and love, by one Spirit we have all been baptized into one body and made to drink of the one Spirit; we thank you for the gifts you have given to this your servant for the building up of the body of Christ. Grant that she may continue in the life of the Spirit and walk with us in the light and obedience of Christ. By the same Spirit, fill the whole Church with your overflowing love; give us knowledge and discernment of your will, and steadfastness in your service, until we all come to the unity of the faith, to the measure of the full stature of Christ, through whom we make our prayer. All Amen.

The Bishop takes Ana’s hand, saying Ana, we recognize you as a member of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church; and we receive you into the communion of the Church of England in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen. The Bishop invites the congregation to pray for all those who have been confirmed or received All Defend, O Lord, these your servants with your heavenly grace, that they may continue yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more until they come to your everlasting kingdom. Amen.

The congregation stands.

WELCOME AND PEACE

The Bishop addresses the newly baptized, confirmed and received, saying: There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: By one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. All We welcome you in the fellowship of faith; we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you.

The congregation greet those who have been baptized, confirmed or received with applause.

The Bishop then introduces the peace.

Christ is our peace. If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old has passed away: behold, everything has become new.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. All And also with you.

The deacon says Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

All may exchange a sign of peace.

THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT

Offertory Hymn 294: Just as I am, without one plea

During the singing of this hymn, a collection is taken for the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with you All and also with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise.

All honour and praise be yours always and everywhere, mighty creator, ever-living God, through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord: for at this time we celebrate your glory made present in our midst. In the coming of the Magi the King of all the world was revealed to the nations. In the waters of baptism Jesus was revealed as the Christ, the Saviour, sent to redeem us. In the water made wine the new creation was revealed at the wedding feast. Poverty was turned to riches, sorrow into joy. Therefore with all the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name and sing our joyful hymn of praise:

The choir sings in English or Latin

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Please remain standing if you are able to do so.

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. The deacon shall say: Great is the mystery of faith: All Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Paul the Apostle and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. All Amen.

Silence may be kept.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray, All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

The Bishop breaks the consecrated bread, saying

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Before the distribution the Bishop says

Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. All Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

THE COMMUNION

All those in communion with their own church are warmly invited to receive Holy Communion. All others are welcome to come forward for a blessing. Communion is taken standing up in two lines. After receiving the bread, please move to either side to receive the chalice. Then return to your seat by the side aisle.

During the distribution the choir sings Agnus Dei.

Anthem: The Lamb - Taverner

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Please stand for the final prayers

God of glory, you nourish us with your Word who is the bread of life: fill us with your Holy Spirit that through us the light of your glory may shine in all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.
