When I enrolled at CMC I wanted to major in Sociology, but that degree was not offered. And so my quest for a major began. I took classes in Political Science, Philosophy, History, Psychology and yes, Sociology and found that I loved them all. I came to the conclusion that I did not have to choose just one, and could major in Social Science, which has a bit of all of them, SCORE! I didn’t have a career in mind at the time I chose my major, I just knew I wanted to help people. During your time at CMC visit a counselor on a regular basis to make sure you are on track and speak to your instructors, they have a wealth of knowledge.

I knew that I wanted to continue with my education as soon as I completed my first semester at CMC. I was a single parent and had two children to support. I was aware that the further I went the better my chances were to give them a better life. I have to be honest, I really didn’t research universities. As I said I was a single mom and could not afford to move. I picked a campus that I could drive to, State University San Bernardino (CSUSB). The Palm Desert campus was open, but did not offer a Bachelor’s in Social Science. At the time I was able to take a few classes, but the majority of my classes were at the main campus in San Bernardino. Students should try to visit the colleges and universities they are interested in. The Transfer Center offers college visits on a regular basis and students should take advantage of these opportunities.

Once you transfer get to know your campus and where everything is located. Be an advocate for yourself. Ask questions and reach out to faculty and staff for guidance. University Advisor Spotlight

My full name is Carly Harmony Patricia Jacobs (long, I know) and I have been enrolled at Copper Mountain College since Fall 2017. I am majoring in Psychology and Studio Arts, while simultaneously working as a Student Worker in the ACCESS Department in Student Services. I also just started working at the General Ernie Reid Bookstore! I graduated from Yucca Valley High School in 2017 and decided to attend Copper Mountain College because of how close the school is to my home and family. Over my time here, I have had the opportunity to meet a variety of people with astounding personalities and backgrounds. In addition, I have had the chance to get involved with my community. Since 2017, I have been involved with Student government (ASCMC), Art Club, ACCESS Club, Literary Arts Club, and Spectrum Club. I have been the President of Spectrum Club since last Spring, and I feel this club is where my core values reside. We actively support LGBT+ and minority rights while providing a safe space to students. I have also been a volunteer for various Foundation events, such as the Wreath Auction, Casino Night, and others. I am so blessed and thankful to have had these opportunities with these organizations. In all honesty, I am almost sad to be transferring to Carly Jacobs Cal State San Bernardino! I am excited to transfer, especially since I will be attending the Palm Desert Campus, however I know I will miss CMC and the President of connections I have made here. Despite the fact I am moving on and continuing my education, I do know the people I have met will not disappear from my life. Spectrum Club I know they will always be there for me, and support me as I continue to greater things. By the end of my educational journey, I plan to receive a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. My goal is to be a counselor for adolescents and youth, primarily LGBT+ individuals. Growing up as a LGBT+ youth who did NOT have available resources or safe spaces to understand my identity, I want to be there for others so they will not have to experience hardship or excessive stress. I’m very thankful for the generosity CMC has brought me, and I am proud to have begun my educational groundwork here! 20th Annual Black College Expo The Transfer Center kicked-off 2019 with a trip to the 20th Annual Black College Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Saturday, February 2nd. This was the second year in a row that Copper Mountain College took a group of students to the Black College Expo. The expo ran from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Students had the opportunity to speak with university Admissions Advisors from Historically Black Colleges & Universities, in-state and out-of-state public and private universities, and learned about academic and support programs offered at schools attending the expo. Students also had the opportunity to attend informational seminars, see live entertainment, and learn about internship opportunities. HBCUs who attend the Black College expo waive applications and offer admission on the spot! This year, we had the opportunity to attend the “After Show” that began at 3:00 pm. This show included a Step performance, a “Dance Off” for cash hosted by celebrity guests, and scholarship giveaways. The Black College Expo takes place in early February each year and we look forward to taking a group of students again next year! Pictured: Caroline Salapare and Janna Browne

2nd Annual Spring Transfer Fair & Grad Day

Last Spring, the Transfer Center introduced CMC’s First Annual “Spring Transfer Fair & Grad Day” and it was a HUGE SUCCESS! Students, staff, and guests had a blast playing games, winning prizes, taking graduation photos, and learning about transfer opportunities from universities still accepting transfer applications.

This year, the tradition continues! The campus hosted a variety of universities and students were able to get their photos taken in the graduation regalia. Prizes were won, games were played, and connections were made between our students and our special programs and university partners. A wonderful send-off to years of hard work on behalf of our graduating students, the Transfer Center was proud to honor our students as they take the next step on their journey. CSUSB & Riverside Art Museum Tours Formally touring college campuses is one of the best ways to find out if a campus is the right fit for you. You get the opportunity to see the campus, ask questions, meet admissions Advisors, check-out student life, and get a general feel for what it’s like to be on campus. The Transfer Center took a group of students to tour California State University, San Bernardino’s main campus on Friday, March 1.

We left CMC at 7:30 am and made it CSUSB in time to meet a student tour guide for a comprehensive tour through the campus. The tour began at the Coyote Bookstore, wrapped around campus to the Social Behavioral Sciences building, aka “the Love Boat,” the physical and biological sciences buildings, passed by the Pfau Library, and continued around campus to move past the education building, and pass through Jack Brown Hall. The tour ended in the Student Union just in time for lunch, which was provided by the Transfer Center.

After lunch, we jumped back in the van to head toward Riverside for the Riverside Art Museum. The museum was beautiful! We took ourselves on a self-guided tour that included interactive art displays!
