On Borneo Far too many people on Borneo were involved in or had contact with this work in some fashion to name each one. Lest the acknowledgements become a chapter in its own right, I limit myself to a few of the most important figures, in approximate order of acquaintance. Gerawat Nulun Tuan, the only non-Lun Bawang on this list, is a Kelabit from Bario, a UH alumnus, and Bob Blust’s first language consultant. Alex connected me with him in advance of my first trip to Borneo in summer 2017 and advised me to begin by flying to Bario to meet him. After a weekend in Miri, I boarded a DHC-6 Twin Otter and took off into the mountains. (“Why am I flying into the middle of nowhere with only a promise that a stranger will be waiting for me there? What if he doesn’t come?” I briefly wondered to myself in midair, as I looked out the window and saw only dense jungle without a single sign of human habitation.) Gerawat, who did indeed keep his promise, took me into his home for three days and introduced me to life in Borneo’s ii highlands, including the local cuisine, before sending me onward to Ba’ Kelalan and arranging for a rendezvous at the airport there. Donna Labo and Kim Hoskin: When I first arrived in Ba’ Kelalan, the first Lun Bawang settlement I visited en route to Long Semadoh, I was sent to Donna Labo’s homestay. That same morning, I was suddenly taken ill in a dramatic fashion, best left to the reader’s imagination, that rendered me utterly useless for about three days. Despite the regrettable circumstances of our first meeting, we got on splendidly, and Donna’s place has been my residence of choice whenever I pass through Ba’ Kelalan since then. I also had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with Kim Hoskin, a British expatriate and Donna’s husband, who had served in the Border Scouts during the Malaysia- Indonesia confrontation. Kim was largely responsible for bringing me up to speed on relevant local and regional history and providing much interesting insight into the local communities. Patrick Tonny Lakai was one of my first acquaintances in Long Semadoh. He introduced me to the chief, Dennis Yahya Ating, who gave his approval to live and work in the area, and he also provided the first wordlists I collected during my first two weeks in Long Semadoh Rayeh. Balan Berauk: Meeting Balan was both an accident and perhaps the most important event of my first trip to Borneo. On the advice of Ukab Palong, of Long Semadoh Rayeh, I had walked downriver to the local primary school to attempt to meet the teachers. My timing was poor, and I found no success, but the guard out front, not confident in his English, flagged down Balan, who happened to be passing by on a motorcycle at that exact moment, and asked him to find out what I wanted. Once I explained, Balan immediately invited me to see his home village of Long Tanid, a short distance further downriver, and meet his family. After I met both his brother Pengiran and his parents, he offered to let me stay with him and to help however he could. I soon accepted, and the overwhelming majority of my notes from that summer, as well as many taken in the next two years, came from our evening chats on the veranda of his house, where we would sit and talk language either until I had exhausted my list of questions or until one of us became too tired to continue. Without those many hours we spent together, this dissertation would probably have never happened at all. iii Berauk Taie and Gerit Sinawat: When I first met Berauk and Gerit, Balan’s parents, we could not easily communicate, having no language in common. Nonetheless, for some inexplicable reason, we took a liking to each other and quickly came to regard one another as extended family. Minutes before I set out on the first leg of my return trip home in summer 2017, Gerit told me, by way of Balan, who translated, that she wanted me to return, marry into the tribe, and stay permanently, later going so far as to offer an undeveloped plot of land on which to build a house. In the summer of 2018, while residing in Long Semadoh Rayeh, I would make the trek to Long Tanid (about 45 minutes or so, taking all applicable jungle shortcuts) once or twice a week to visit them while Balan was away in Kuala Lumpur. Since they spoke no English and I had not yet begun to learn Malay, these many visits helped my fluency in Lun Bawang immensely, and through them we each came to understand the other’s world slightly better. Berauk, though physically ailing due to age, had a sharp memory before he tragically lost it to a stroke, and I learned from him many fascinating facets of Lun Bawang history, some integrated into Chapter 2. Perhaps most impressive was that, more than seventy years later, he could still recall perfectly and sing, though understanding not a word of it, a patriotic song that he had been forced to learn during the Japanese occupation of his birthplace of Long Beluyu’, one village further downriver, during World War II. To my sorrow, Berauk passed away in February of 2020; further regrettably, even if I had been able to board a plane the moment I received the news, the amount of time needed to travel to Long Tanid from Honolulu would have made my presence for the burial impossible. I continue to hold out hope that, even in this new world order brought on by the corona scamdemic, I may some day be able to return to see the site of his grave.

According to UNHCR, at least 10 million people worldwide have no nationality. While stateless people are entitled to human rights under international law, without a nationality, they often face barriers that prevent them from accessing their rights. These include the right to establish a legal residence, travel, work in the formal economy, access education, access basic health services, purchase or own property, vote, hold elected office, and enjoy the protection and security of a country. The Bajau Laut (who often self-identify as Sama Dilaut and are referred to by others as ‘Pala’uh’) are arguably some of the most marginalised people in Malaysia. Despite records of their presence in the region dating back for centuries, today many Bajau Laut have no legal nationality documents bonding them to a State, are highly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. The Bajau Laut are a classic example of a protracted and intergenerational statelessness situation. Children, the majority of whom were born in Sabah and have never set foot in another country, are particularly at risk.

This is the first to be exclusively devoted to the results of phonological analysis in Sulawesi, following the pattern set by the volumes dealing with phonologies of Maluku and Irian Jaya languages. The phonologies of five languages are presented, three of which belong to the lesser known languages of the South Sulawesi group. PUS (Pitu Ulunna Salu) is described by Philip Campbell, Mamasa by DaVId Matti, and Aralle- Tabulahan by Robin McKenzie. Although the phonology of Mamasa appears to be very similar to that of Sa'dan Toraja, the other two languages show remarkable divergences, such as the presence of a sixth vowel, constraints on final nasals (only m in PUS) and the development of geminate consonants intohp,ht, etc.

This community is known for being a community that has its own distinctive identity. Although they were ruled by various administrations like the British North Borneo Charted Company (BNBCC) since 1881 till 1941, the Japanese Ruling (1946-1962), the era of post-independence since 1963; they are still holding adamantly to their traditional culture. The arrival of religious influences like Christianity started since the 1950s also did not distance themselves with their community’s culture. Therefore, this has proven the ability of the Murut Tahol community to ensure their traditional cultures are preserved. Research that has been done on the Murut Tahol community in Kampung Alutok, Ulu Tomani, shows that the community is making adaptations to its culture so that it can be on par with the religion they have adopted and that it is well-suited with the passing of time.

    Research Note The Austronesian Comparative Dictionary: A Work in Progress Robert Blust and Stephen Trussel UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA AND TRUSSEL SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT The Austronesian comparative dictionary (ACD) is an open-access online resource that currently (June 2013) includes 4,837 sets of reconstructions for nine hierarchically ordered protolanguages. Of these, 3,805 sets consist of single bases, and the remaining 1,032 sets contain 1,032 bases plus 1,781 derivatives, including affixed forms, reduplications, and compounds. His- torical inferences are based on material drawn from more than 700 attested languages, some of which are cited only sparingly, while others appear in over 1,500 entries. In addition to its main features, the ACD contains sup- plementary sections on widely distributed loanwords that could potentially lead to erroneous protoforms, submorphemic “roots,” and “noise” (in the information-theoretic sense of random lexical similarity that arises from historically independent processes). Although the matter is difficult to judge, the ACD, which prints out to somewhat over 3,000 single-spaced pages, now appears to be about half complete. 1. INTRODUCTION. 1 The December 2011 issue of this journal carried a Research Note that described the history and present status of POLLEX, the Polynesian Lexicon project initiated by the late Bruce Biggs in 1965, which over time has grown into one of the premier comparative dictionaries available for any language family or major subgroup (Greenhill and Clark 2011). A theme that runs through this piece is the remark- able growth over the 46 years of its life (at that time), not just in the content of the dictio- nary, but in the technological medium in which the material is embedded.

We have not attempted to embody in it the observations recorded by other writers, although we have profited by them and have been guided and aided by them in making our own observations. We have rather been content to put on record as much information as we have been able to obtain at first hand, both by direct observation of the people and of their possessions, customs, and manners, and by means of innumerable conversations with men and women of many tribes. The reader has a right to be informed as to the nature of the opportunities we have enjoyed for collecting our material, and we therefore make the following personal statement. One of us (C. H.) has spent twenty-four years as a Civil Officer in the service of the Rajah of Sarawak; and of this time twenty-one years were spent actually in Sarawak, while periods of some months were spent from time to time in visiting neighbouring lands -- Celebes, Sulu Islands, Ternate, Malay Peninsula, British North Borneo, and Dutch Borneo.

Once performed in healing rituals, the modern-day Magunatip is mainly performed during celebrations such as bride wealth exchange ceremonies, weddings, and harvest festivals. Based on oral sources, Magunatip is believed to have evolved either from a folk game played during paddy pounding sessions or a ritual invoked during healing ceremonies. This paper presents an investigation on the healing ritual context of Magunatip as told in the form of legends by elderly Murut informants. By analysing the healing ritual context of Magunatip, the significance of the dance in relation to the culture and traditional beliefs of the Murut community could be ascertained.
