Okies, the dominant narrative goes, failed to organize in the ways that Mexican farm workers did, developed little connection with Mexican or Filipino farm workers, and clung to traditional gender roles that valorized the male breadwinner. -

Specifically, we will examine the life of particular minds— intellectuals of different political, moral, and social persuasions and sensibilities, who have played prominent roles in American public life over the course of the last century. Despite the common conception of American culture as profoundly anti-intellectual, we will evaluate how professional thinkers and writers have indeed been forces in American society. Our aim is to investigate the contested meaning, role, and place of the intellectual in a democratic, capitalist culture. We will also examine the cultural conditions, academic and governmental institutions, and the media for the dissemination of ideas, which have both fostered and inhibited intellectual production and exchange. Roughly the first third of the semester will be devoted to reading studies in U.S. and comparative intellectual history, the sociology of knowledge, and critical social theory. In addition, students will explore the varieties of public intellectual life by becoming familiarized with a wide array of prominent American philosophers, political and social theorists, scientists, novelists, artists, and activists. -

BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

(2018): 47-62 Queeremos a Gloria Anzaldúa: Identity, Difference, New Tribalism, and Affective Eco-Dialogues1 CaroliNa NúñEz-PuENtE Abstract This article starts by conceptualizing Anzaldúa’s (and other thinkers’) approaches to poetry, queerness, identity, and difference fromBorderlands (1987) to later works. Part two examines her thoughts on new tribalism, most of which appeared in Interviews/Entrevistas (2000), This Bridge We Call Home (2002), The Gloria Anzaldúa Reader (2009), and Light in the Dark (2015). Both sections also describe the possible dialogues between her poetry and prose. Part three takes dialogical connections further, by putting Anzaldúa into an affective eco-dialogue (my term) with contemporary feminists. The article’s thesis is that Anzaldúa’s queer way of feeling-thinking-being marked the style, themes, and goals of her oeuvre; furthermore, given her ability to go beyond binary oppositions by means of articulating difference in an affective, dialogical, and ecofeminist fashion, Anzaldúa must be considered a posthumanist philosopher. Unlike the bitter clashes of the late 1930’s between the Communist-led farm labourers and the entrenched gentry which exploited them this confrontation is between the mammoth American Federation of Labour-Congress of Industrial Organizations and the shadowy but sophisticated and equally powerful family corporations which have inherited and consolidated the valley’s agrarian wealth until they control the economy of Central California. “But although the agricultural workers are not being rousted from their shacks in the dead of the night by armed mobs of vigilantes and American Legionaires as they were before the war, and in spite of the absence of the Communist agitators, the new conflict reflects the same basic struggle that John Steinbeck chronicled in ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ and ‘In Dubious Battle’. “The battlecry is ‘huelga’ (Spanish for ‘strike’) a word which is now heard not only in the fields, but also in boardrooms and banks, where it has assumed great meaning in the vocabularies of the men who control the destiny of America’s largest agricultural State. -

Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Date DE-6 (2/88) Abstract "Encountering 'this season's retrieval': Historical Fiction, Literary Postmodernism and the Novels of Peter Ackroyd" engages the novels Peter Ackroyd has published, and situates them within broader generic considerations and critical dialogue. Part I, an extended prefatorial apparatus, places Ackroyd and his published fiction within three historico- critical contexts: the problem of author-as-reliable-source and the disparate histories of (a) the historical novel and (b) postmodernism in general (and literary postmodernism in particular). By interrogating the histories and points-of-contention of these areas, this Part aims to problematize critical discourse enveloping Ackroyd's fiction.
