Collins4, Izeni Pires Farias2 Rafaela Priscila Ota 2 [email protected] and Tomas Hrbek Pacus of the genus Myloplus represent a formidable taxonomic challenge, and particularly so for the case of M. asterias and M. rubripinnis, two widespread and common species that harbor considerable morphological diversity. Here we apply DNA barcoding and multiple species discovery methods to find candidate species in this complex group. We report on one well-supported lineage that is also morphologically and ecologically distinct. This lineage represents a new species that can be distinguished from congeners by the presence of dark chromatophores on lateral-line scales, which gives the appearance of a black lateral line. It can be further diagnosed by having 25–29 branched dorsal-fin rays (vs. 18–24), 89–114 perforated scales from the supracleithrum to the end of hypural plate (vs. 56–89), and 98–120 total lateral line scales (vs. 59–97). The new species is widely distributed in the Amazon basin, but seems to have a preference for black- and clearwater habitats. This ecological preference and black lateral line color pattern bears a striking similarity to the recently described silver dollar Submitted September 24, 2019 Metynnis melanogrammus. Hyperspectral Data As a Biodiversity Screening Tool Can Differentiate
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Hyperspectral data as a biodiversity screening tool can diferentiate among diverse Neotropical fshes M. A. Kolmann1,2*, M. Kalacska3, O. Lucanus4, L. Sousa5, D. Wainwright6, J. P. Arroyo‑Mora7 & M. C. Andrade8 Hyperspectral data encode information from electromagnetic radiation (i.e., color) of any object in the form of a spectral signature; these data can then be used to distinguish among materials or even map whole landscapes. Although hyperspectral data have been mostly used to study landscape ecology, foral diversity and many other applications in the natural sciences, we propose that spectral signatures can be used for rapid assessment of faunal biodiversity, akin to DNA barcoding and metabarcoding. We demonstrate that spectral signatures of individual, live fsh specimens can accurately capture species and clade‑level diferences in fsh coloration, specifcally among piranhas and pacus (Family Serrasalmidae), fshes with a long history of taxonomic confusion. We analyzed 47 serrasalmid species and could distinguish spectra among diferent species and clades, with the method sensitive enough to document changes in fsh coloration over ontogeny. Herbivorous pacu spectra were more like one another than they were to piranhas; however, our method also documented interspecifc variation in pacus that corresponds to cryptic lineages. While spectra do not serve as an alternative to the collection of curated specimens, hyperspectral data of fshes in the feld should help clarify which specimens might be unique or undescribed, complementing existing molecular and morphological techniques. Te biological sciences face two dire and disturbing issues: (1) increases in extinctions of animals across all con- tinents and oceans1–4, as well as (2) a shrinking pool of taxonomists trained to identify these organisms 5–7. -

In this study, I investigated the reproductive biology of fish species from the family Characidae of the order Characiformes. I also investigated the relationship between reproductive biology and body weight and interpreted this relationship in a phylogenetic context. The results of the present study contribute to the understanding of the evolution of the reproductive strategies present in the species of this family. Most larger characid species and other characiforms exhibit a reproductive pattern that is generally characterized by a short seasonal reproductive period that lasts one to three months, between September and April. This is accompanied by total spawning, an extremely high fecundity, and, in many species, a reproductive migration. Many species with lower fecundity exhibit some form of parental care. Although reduction in body size may represent an adaptive advantage, it may also require evolutionary responses to new biological problems that arise. In terms of reproduction, smaller species have a tendency to reduce the number of oocytes that they produce. Many small characids have a reproductive pattern similar to that of larger characiforms. On the other hand they may also exhibit a range of modifications that possibly relate to the decrease in body size and the consequent reduction in fecundity. -

The present paper is an enumeration of the fishes so far recorded from the streams and lakes of South America, with a few preliminary remarks on the extent, peculiarity, and origin of the fauna an<l the division of the ueotropics into provinces. An attempt has been made to include those marine forms which have been found in the rivers beyond brackish water and to exclude those which probably enter fresh waters, bnt have not actually been found in any streams. Central American species are not enumerated. The aim being to present a synopsis of what has been accomplished rather than a list of the species which in our estimation are valid, all the doubtful species are enumerated and the synonyms of each species are given. All the names given to South American fishes prior to 1890 are therefore to be found here. We have endeavored to adopt and incorporate the results of the latest investigations, chiefly those of Giinther, Gill, Cope, Boulenger, Steindachner, and Eigenmann and Eigenmann. Since works of a re- visionary character on South American fishes are few, and many of the species have been recorded but once, many changes in the present list will doubtless become necessary. The data was gathered from two main sources: 1) litterature compilations of species occurrence records, including original descriptions and re- visionary studies; and 2) specimens verification at the INPA fish collection. The results reveal a rich and diversified ichthyofauna, with 1,165 species distributed in 17 orders (+ two incertae sedis), 56 families, and 389 genera. A large portion of the fish fauna (54.3% of the species) is composed of small-sized fishes < 10 cm in standard length. -
