Applebaum for Celloheaven GREGOR PIATIGORSKY PART A – Biographical Details By Celloheaven One of the pre-eminent string players of the 20th century, Gregor Piatigorsky was born in Ukraine in 1903, and died in Los Angeles in 1976. His international solo career lasted over 40 years, and especially during the 1940's and early 1950's he was the world's premier touring cello virtuoso -- Casals was in retirement, Feuermann had died, and the three artists who were to succeed Piatigorsky (Starker, Rose, and Rostropovich) were still in their formative stages. His one true peer, Fournier, was limited in his travelling abilities by polio. Thus, Piatigorsky had the limelight almost to himself. He was gregarious, loved to travel and perform anywhere, and he hobnobbed as easily with farmers in small towns as he did with Toscanini, Stravinsky, Rubenstein, and Schoenberg. -

JULY 10–16, 2013 Music Director ALAN GILBERT To Conduct Four Free Concerts Throughout the Boroughs of New York City Principal Cello CARTER BREY To Perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto New York Philharmonic Brass To Perform Free Indoor Concert in Staten Island The 2013 New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer, will return for the 48th season with four free outdoor concerts, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, in Prospect Park, Brooklyn (July 10); Cunningham Park, Queens (July 11); the Great Lawn in Central Park, Manhattan (July 15); and Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx (July 16). In addition, the New York Philharmonic Brass will give a Free Indoor Concert at the Center for the Arts, College of Staten Island, CUNY (July 14). Strauss paints a series of musical portraits of Don Quixote’s ill-fated exploits, from an adventure with windmills, to battling a flock of sheep, to encountering a band of pilgrims. The Don’s musings about Lady Dulcinea, the imagined woman of his dreams, inspire some of Strauss’ most ravishingly beautiful music. TIM STEWART, NCS ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL TRUMPET Cello Concerto WILLIAM WALTON BORN March 29, 1902, in Oldham, Lancashire, England; died March 7, 1983, on Ischia, in the Bay of Naples PREMIERE Composed 1956; first performance January 27, 1957, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Charles Munch conducting, with Gregor Piatigorsky as soloist OVERVIEW It was with the First Symphony, completed after almost three years of painstaking labor in 1935, that William Walton came to his artistic maturity. Though he had gained a wide notoriety with Façade (1922), the Viola Concerto (1929), and the oratorio Belshazzar’s Feast, it was beginning with the First Symphony that, according to the British critic Colin Mason, “the impulse is no longer the desire to express for others, but the necessity to express for himself.” In his next major orchestral work, the Violin Concerto written in 1939 for Heifetz, Walton added to the sturdy harmonic palette, exuberant rhythms, and brilliant manner of orchestration “a strong feeling for lyricism” (the composer’s own words) and a virtuosic flair, all based on an unmistakable allegiance to his Romantic antecedents. Much of Walton’s activity during the years of World War II was given to composing ballet and music for films (notably the memorable collaborations with Laurence Olivier on Henry V, Hamlet, and Richard III). -
