She is author or co-author of eight monographs and ten edited volumes exploring women and gender, power, and, most recentl,y emo- tions and material culture, focusing particularly on early modern France and the Low Countries. She was a Foundation Chief Investigator in the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, and now holds an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship, researching emotions and power in the correspondence of Catherine de’ Medici. Carolyn E. Brown is a Professor at the University of San Francisco where she teaches Shakespeare and Renaissance/Early Modern literature. Her scholarship is feminist, historicist, and psychoanalytic. Her publications on Shakespeare appear in the following journals—Studies in Philology; Clio: A Journal of Literature, History, and the Philosophy of History; Studies in English Literature; Texas Studies in Literature and Language; Shakespeare Studies; Literature and Psychology; American Imago; and English Literary Renaissance—and several anthologies. She is author of the book Shakespeare and Psychoanalytic Theory (2015). Ugo Bruschi is Assistant Professor in Medieval and Modern Legal History at the University of Bologna, Italy. He is a member of the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions and of the Royal Historical Society. Lately, his research has focused on the English political and constitutional system in the early modern period. He has presented or published many papers on this topic; his book, Rivoluzioni silen- ziose. L’evoluzione costituzionale della Gran Bretagna tra la Glorious Revolution e il Great Reform Act (2014), traces the evolution of the British constitution in the long eighteenth century. He is currently working on a book about the rise of the prime minister and of the cabinet system in the Georgian era. Kavita Mudan Finn is an independent scholar who has taught medieval and early modern literature at Georgetown University, George Washington xi xii Notes on Contributors University, Simmons College, Southern New Hampshire University, and the University of Maryland, College Park. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in 2010 and published her first book,The Last Plantagenet Consorts: Gender, Genre, and Historiography 1440–1627, in 2012. Her work has also appeared in Shakespeare (the journal of the British Shakespeare Association), Viator, Critical Survey, The Journal of Fandom Studies, and Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England, and she has edited several collections, most recently Fan Phenomena: Game of Thrones (2017).

  • Literature Review the Outline of My Research Topic Will Encompass
    Literature Review The outline of my research topic will encompass Anne of Denmark’s role as queen consort in Scotland and England, from 1589 to 1619, in order to investigate her political influence. To fully understand Anna’s political role, recent historiography surrounding influential women in early modern England and, in particular, the role of the queen consort will be evaluated in depth. My research will contribute to these two growing fields and fill a gap by re-examining Anna, who historians once considered frivolous and vain. Accompanied by re-definitions of high politics at one end of the spectrum and court masques at the other, a re-assessment of her character throughout her reign as queen consort of Scotland and England is accordingly needed. The value of analysing Anna in a political light will be demonstrated in this essay through an examination of the historiography surrounding influential women in early modern England, queen consorts in general and then Anna herself. Previous study has excluded women from high politics because it was considered part of the public sphere, rather than the private sphere that they belonged to. In her article ‘Women and Politics in Early Tudor England’, Harris challenges the traditional view of high politics by emphasising its redefinition to include the influence of women.1 Sara Mendelson and Patricia Crawford’s book, Women in Early Modern England, echoes this view.     The Ballad Tradition Historical Ballads Some background to the Historical ballads Historical ballads date mainly from the period 1550–750, though a few, like “The Battle of Otterburn,” celebrate events of an earlier date, in this case 1388. “The Hunting of the Cheviot,” recorded about the same time and dealing with the same campaign, is better known in a late broadside version called “Chevy Chase.” The details in historical ballads are usually incorrect as to fact because of faulty memory or partisan alterations, but they are valuable in reflecting folk attitudes toward the events they imperfectly report. For example, neither “The Death of Queen Jane,” about one of the wives of Henry VIII, nor “The Bonny Earl of Murray” is correct in key details, but they accurately express the popular mourning for these figures. By far the largest number of ballads that can be traced to historical occurrences have to do with local skirmishes and matters of regional rather than national importance. The troubled border between England and Scotland in the 16th and early 17th centuries furnished opportunities for intrepid displays of loyalty, courage, and cruelty that are chronicled in such dramatic ballads as “Edom o Gordon,” “The Fire of Frendraught,” “Johnny Cock,” “Johnie Armstrong,” and “Hobie Noble.” Closely analogous to these are Spanish romances such as “The Seven Princes of Lara,” on wars between Moors and Christians. britianica.com Background to the poem Sir Patric Spence: ‘William H. Matchett considers the ballad probably to be fiction. The events of the ballad are similar to, and may chronicle, an actual event: In 1290 the bringing home of the Scottish heir to the throne, the seven-year-old Margaret, Maid of Norway was being conveyed across the North Sea to Scotland, when she took sick and died.

    The American Shakespeare Center's Ninth Blackfriars Conference TUESDAY 24 OCTOBER 2017 – SUNDAY 29 OCTOBER 2017 A Conference for the Exploration and Celebration of Early Modern Drama The most convenient place that I can think of for such receipt of learning is Blackfriars. Henry VIII, 2.2.139 HONOREE The goal of the Blackfriars Conference is to create a better understanding of the ways we work and give us all new tools for that work by advancing the conversation between Shakespeare scholars and theatre artists. At each conference we honor a colleague whose career has modeled the rewards of a bilateral accord between the page and the stage. With one exception, our past honorees have been scholars—Andrew Gurr, Alan Dessen, Stephen Booth, George Williams, and Barbara Mowat. The one exception was our first honoree, the late C. Walter Hodges, a theatre artist in the most literal sense, whose illustrations reimagining early modern theatres inspired so many scholars and in part our Blackfriars. This year we honor another artist. Richard Hay, whose work as a stage designer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival began officially in 1953 when Bill Patton appointed him Designer and Technical Director. In the sixty-four years since, he has created stage worlds at OSF for more than 220 productions including all of Shakespeare’s plays—at least twice each. And, oh yes, he also designed the four theatres in Ashland: the Allen Elizabethan Theatre, the Angus Bowmer Theatre, the Black Swan, and the Thomas Theatre. That’s just the work he did in Ashland. He’s created set designs for dozens of others theatres, and he’s designed the theatres themselves for the Festival Stage and New Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, the Source Theatre and Space Theatre in Denver, the Intiman Playhouse in Seattle, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland, Oregon.
