Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to introduce students to the principals of figure and fabric painting from life. It is designed to develop manual skills in drawing and painting and increase one’s understanding of quickly rendering an image. Supply List:

• Grey Pallet for paint mixing, or disposable grey pallet paper (ideal) or white. • Acrylic brushes-A variety of sizes. I prefer Flats, Filberts and Brights. You will want a couple fairly large brushes, and at least one tiny round for highlights and details. • A larger 2”-4” bristle brush for overall toning washes and gesso application when needed. (Jason will have a few available to all drawing/painting lab students) • Acrylic Paint- Required: Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red, Cad Yellow Med, Black, a big tube of White, Violet/Purple, and Raw Umber (You are welcome to buy as many colors as you like) Other personal favorites of mine are: Pthalo Green, Aliz. Crimson Red, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Cerulean Blue, Pthalo Blue, Cadmium Yellow Lt. • Spray bottle (not required but really useful for keeping your paints wet in your pallet) • Water Container • Clear Acrylic Medium-(this is optional but I like to work with it) • Pallet Knife • Paper Towels • Plastic Wrap-(for saving mixed paint) • A Pad of Bristol Board (you will prepare this for painting by applying gesso to both sides) • 8.5”x11” Sketchbook • White and/or Kneaded Eraser • Pencils for field trip drawings (No 2 is ok. You are welcome to buy art pencils if you wish) • 2 18”X24” or larger pre-stretched canvases for your copy paintings • Heavy paper. You are welcome to purchase heavy paper, bristol board, or rolls of pre- primed canvas to paint on. You are also welcome to paint on the backside of cardboard boxes. I prefer cereal or cracker boxes. The cardboard of these boxes take paint well and are inexpensive. NO corrugated cardboard in class please. I like to work on disposable materials so the work looses its preciousness. I also like to work on material that can ultimately be framed or photographed for your portfolios.

Start saving those cardboard boxes now. You will be painting numerous of quick paintings in this class. We will work at minimum two days a week from a live model. We will present the best 25 paintings from each student every 5 weeks.

(Jason is buying a gallon of gesso for the class. One this is empty, the class may need to purchase another. I like to tint the gesso grey for a neutral background.)

ATTENDANCE: •Grades will be lowered for absenteeism in this class. As there is no outside reading, the majority of information is given during the class periods. So, plan to attend all classes and labs. Department regulations allow each student 3 unexcused absences. Unexcused absences in excess of 3 will result in a loss of points and a lowered grade. If class time is missed, you are expected to make up your work. Any adjustment of schedules must be made one week in advance, in writing and agreed to by professor. •Tardiness will also be heavily penalized. 2 “tardies” = one absence.

• Religious Holy Days By UT Austin policy, you must notify me of your pending absence at least fourteen days prior to the date of observance of a religious holy day. If you must miss a class, an examination, a work assignment, or a project in order to observe a religious holy day, I will give you an opportunity to complete the missed work within a reasonable time after the absence. For the purpose of this class, I am defining a reasonable time as being no later than the end of class time of the next class date.
