I would like also to thank Kuwait University for supporting me financially. iii Abstract Schools, as vital transmitters of societal values, help to shape students’ values and personalities. In Kuwait, female students are subjected to a continuous stream of messages from teachers and textbooks regarding the social roles they are expected to occupy. The school system, however, is a reflection of a larger Kuwaiti society that emphasizes the value of appropriate gender roles. This societal norm has its roots in Kuwait’s history and past traditions. In order to understand the effects of this value on Kuwaiti women, I have probed the past of Kuwait while tracing the ways in which the roles of Kuwaiti women have changed over time. In the era preceding the discovery of oil, women’s tasks were limited to and defined by the domestic sphere; after the discovery of oil, they were able to leave that isolated private world and emerge into the public sphere. However, they are still confined to restricted public positions and occupations and so they have formed organizations to help them assert their social and political rights. Their claims for expanded public participation have a polarized reaction from conservative and liberal positions: the former wishes to return women to their natural position in the household, whereas the latter supports their involvement in public occupations and responsibilities. Today, Kuwaiti women are voting and running for office, which is a new and unfamiliar expression of Kuwaiti social values. I believe I am uniquely positioned as a cultural studies student to address critical issues in Kuwaiti society at a time when women are becoming visible in its public and political life. Also, in emphasizing education as the channel in which to address them, I have undertaken this dissertation in the hope that it may help Kuwaiti women to review their status and to see the crucial role they can play in the future of their country. iv I. Women and Politics in Kuwait By Muhamad S. Olimat1 Abstract On May 17, 2008, Kuwait conducted its Twelfth election of its National Assembly. The most remarkable aspect of the election was the active participation of women, who gained their right to vote in May 2005. This paper argues that the main impediment for women’s inability to win any seat in the 11th and 12th Assemblies is their failure to work with each other and support their political rights. The objective of this article is to examine the Kuwaiti women’s struggle for political rights, their participation in the last two elections and investigate their inability to win any seats, in spite of the conduciveness of the political environment to their electoral success.

For the very first time in Kuwait’s political history, the women’s movement managed to send four female representatives to the National Assembly. Their electoral success ushers a new phase in Kuwait’s political process in which women finally become active participants. The goal of this article is to examine women’s struggle for political rights, their electoral success, their role in current Kuwaiti politics, their accomplishments, and their future in politics in Kuwait. It focuses on topics such as globalisation, economic development, diversification of and challenges facing resource rich economies, trade relations between the Gulf States and major trading partners, energy trading, security and migration. The Programme primarily studies the six states that comprise the Gulf Cooperation Council – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. However, it also adopts a more flexible and broader conception when the interests of research require that key regional and international actors, such as Yemen, Iraq, Iran, as well as its interconnections with Russia, China and India, be considered. The Programme is hosted in LSE’s interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Global Governance, and led by Professor David Held, co- director of the Centre.     Attitudes of Kuwaiti Young Adults toward Marriage and Divorce: A Comparative Study between Young Adults from Intact and Divorced Families Humoud Alqashan Hayfaa Alkandari Abstract: This study investigates whether parental marital status affects young adults’ attitudes toward marriage and divorce. There exists a vast amount of literature on the impact of divorce on young adults in Western cultures; however, no previous empirical studies have been conducted on the attitudes of young adults from intact and divorced families in the Gulf region or in Arab countries in the Middle East. The sample of the study consisted of 661 young adults from Kuwait University (from divorced and intact families). The findings reveal that adults whose parents divorced show fewer positive attitudes toward marriage than do those individuals from intact marriages. The study also suggests that adults whose parents were divorced carry more positive attitudes toward divorce compared with individuals from intact marriages. Furthermore, gender was found to be an important factor in shaping attitudes toward marriage and divorce. A longitudinal study is recommended to look at the changes in young adults’ attitudes toward marriage and divorce over time, which will help to identify the influence of other factors of attitudes toward marriage and divorce. INTRODUCTION The impact of parental divorce on children was reported to be associated with a stressful experience for children at any age (Cooney, Hutchinson, & Leather, 1995; Mahl, 2001). Parental divorce was reported to be the most stressful event that children experience in their lives (Wolchik et al., 1993). Likewise, children of divorced families are at an increased risk of social and psychological problems which may continue into their adult life (Amato & Sobolewski, 2001; Wallerstein, Lewis, & Blakeslee, 2000).

Al-Suwaihel, Colorado State University, USA ABSTRACT This research revealed the interactions between the Kuwaiti culture, gender, and leadership from the perspective of five Kuwaiti female leaders. Within a qualitative design approach and narrative inquiry methodology, the researcher interviewed five Kuwaiti females who shared their stories of their personal and professional experiences about the interactions between culture, gender, and leadership. The analysis and interpretation of this research uncovered two key findings: 1) the influence of Kuwaiti culture on female leadership and 2) the commitment of these female leaders to have a positive impact on their culture. The development of female leadership within Kuwait represented a collaborative effort by all the country’s female leaders. As this research showed, these female leaders took advantage of every opportunity to prove their capabilities as leaders who deserve to serve effectively beside male leaders. The research data included some recommendations that could provide significant support for the development of female leaders, not only in the State of Kuwait, but also in other countries that could benefit from such progress. In addition, this project included some implications for further research studies focused on issues related to the interactions between female leadership and cultural influences. INTRODUCTION In the last two decades, centuries-old monarchies in the Middle East have begun to shift toward more open societies by integrating democratic rights into their laws.' In an exciting move by a number of these parliaments and monarchs, women have been granted suffrage throughout the region.2 Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, and, to a limited extent, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have each granted suffrage to women since the beginning of the Twenty-First Century.3 With this grant of suffrage, these fledgling democracies are faced with drafting and implementing laws for the administration of free and fair elections for the first time. A number of challenges mark this transition, including the task of fully incorporating the electoral rights of women who wear face-covering veils for religious reasons, while guarding against the threat of voter fraud.4 This problem of the "vote and the veil"' colliding at the polling booth occurs in two unique circumstances, both related to voter identification requirements.

    HARD-WON PROGRESS AND A LONG ROAD AHEAD: WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA by Sanja Kelly As the governments of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) under- take the diffi cult process of enacting social and political change, the unequal status of women presents a particularly formidable challenge. In Iraq, deliberations over women’s legal status have been as contentious as negotiations over how to structure the government. In Jordan, measures to increase penalties for so-called honor crimes faced strong resistance by ultraconservative parliamentarians and ordinary citizens who believe that tradition and religion afford them the right to severely punish and even murder female relatives for behavior they deem immoral. These debates are not just legal and philosophical struggles among elites. They are emo- tionally charged political battles that touch upon fundamental notions of morality and social order. In order to provide a detailed look at the conditions faced by women in the Middle East and understand the complex environment surrounding efforts to improve their status, Freedom House conducted a comprehen- sive study of women’s rights in the region. The fi rst edition of this project was published in 2005. The present edition offers an updated examination of the issue, with a special focus on changes that have occurred over the last fi ve years. Although the study indicates that a substantial defi cit in women’s rights persists in every country in the MENA region, the fi ndings also include notable progress, particularly in terms of economic opportu- nities, educational attainment, and political participation.

    The Influence of Social Dominance Orientation and Power Distance on Attitudes Toward Women Managers Aneika Simmons Sam Houston State University Andrea Hawkins Alabama A&M University Jo-Ann Duffy Sam Houston State University Hamed Alfraih Kuwait University Abstract We investigated how social dominance orientation (SDO) and power distance (PD) influence attitudes toward women managers. We collected data from women in both Kuwait and America. We discovered that the interaction between perceptions of high PD and SDO resulted in favorable attitudes toward women managers in America and unfavorable attitudes toward women managers in Kuwait. Contrary to our prediction, we also discovered that perceived low PD in American women who are high in SDO has a positive attitude toward other women managers. In agreement with our predictions, perceived low PD in Kuwaiti women who are high in SDO has a negative attitude toward other women managers. The rate is presently over 57% up from 54% in the previous decade (OECD Factbook, 2010). At the same time, the number of women in the work force is increasing. However, women across the world find themselves underrepresented in management positions according to the World Survey on the Role of Women in Development (United Nations, 2009). Further, the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) indicates that only 1.8% of organizations are led by women (Toegel, 2011). Women make up 47% of the current United States work force, and 44% of the S&P 500 work force (Warner, 2014; Warner & Corley, 2017).
