JM De Guzman Vows to Do Better This Time As He Headlines a Soap Opera with Neophyte Leading Lady Barbie Imperial #Insideshowbizlovesjuanbie MARCH 10 - 16, 2018 ISSUE EXCLUSIVE TELL-ALL INTERVIEW! “Kinakabahan ako kasi I was given another chance and they trusted me again” THE COMEBACK JM de Guzman vows to do better this time as he headlines a soap opera with neophyte leading lady Barbie Imperial #InsideShowbizLovesJuanBie JENICA MAGQUILAT EDITOR ANGELU ZAFE WEB CONTENT WRITER ART NICOLE VILLARUEL, BRIA CARDENAS MULTIMEDIA ARTISTS DENNIS FLORORITA FINAL ARTIST SPECIAL PROJECTS MARGA TUPAZ HEAD RED DE LEON ASSOCIATE CREATIVE DIRECTOR MARA MADRID, CHARLENE TY, ANDREA LAM, ANGELI MANABAT, LOUISE SICAT COPYWRITERS DEN FAJARDO, ALEXA MANLANGIT GRAPHIC ARTISTS BETTINA DE LOS REYES, JOSHUA ARGOSINO, CARMINA AGLIPAY MULTIMEDIA ARTISTS CONTRIBUTOR JERICK SANCHEZ PHOTOGRAPHER ROSY MINA WRITER ERICA LUNA EDITORIAL ADMIN ASSOCIATE SUKI SALVADOR VICE-PRESIDENT — MAGAZINE & PRINT BUSINESS ARCHIE CARRASCO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER FOUNDER & CEO SARI YAP CHAIRMAN J. TIU FOUNDING CREATIVE DIRECTOR LORRAINE BELMONTE MAKING WAVES The right time has come for JM de Guzman and Barbie Imperial as they embark on their biggest break in showbiz to date It is a picture-perfect afternoon. The seawater is tranquil. The sun is not so punishing. The clouds are like light strokes painted on the bright blue sky. Everything is calm. More so are the people at the beach location. In the midst of a whole-day taping, the crew and cast seem to be relaxed. It is a laidback set and its leading man is just as chill. JM de Guzman enters the scene, a picture of calm and composure with his deep-set eyes and gentle demeanor. Yet, he admits to feeling a little bit uneasy lately. “Anxious ako nang konti. Kinakabahan ako kasi I was given another chance and they trusted me again,” says the headliner of the upcoming soap opera Precious Hearts Romances (PHR): Araw Gabi. Despite this feeling, his slight apprehension doesn’t show. His aura remains youthful and peaceful. He notes that more than anything, he is really excited about his television comeback. It has been three years since JM was last seen on a TV drama. His previous teleseryes with him as the lead are All of Me, Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto, and Angelito: Batang Ama. His last headlined film with a commercial release was the 2015 indie smash That Thing Called Tadhana for which he won the Gawad PASADO Best Actor award. The Antoinette Jadaone-directed movie, which paired him up with Angelica Panganiban, is among the films credited for starting the hugot trend in Philippine cinema. INSIDE SHOWBIZ WEEKLY MARCH 2018 In 2015, even as he has stepped away from the spotlight at that time, he still earned an accolade from the Metro Manila Film Festival. He earned the Best Actor award in the New Wave full feature category for Tandem. However, the acclaimed actor does not want to revel in his awards and good reviews. He chooses to define himself in a way that is unexpected. “Overrated,” he declares as he points to himself. COMEBACK KID This is JM’s second showbiz comeback after battling drug addiction and entering a rehabilitation center in late 2015. He is now in the aftercare stage that is why he is able to go back to doing what he really loves—acting. Given that Araw Gabi is his second comeback, JM is still at a loss for words on why he was given another shot in showbiz. He is grateful for the new chance, but he still cannot believe it. “God’s grace na rin. ‘Yun talaga. It’s not something that I deserve,” he softly says. “Blessing na rin ito doon sa mga tao na tumulong sa akin.” He goes on, “Nag-workshop kami. I’m preparing physically for the role. I spend time with myself focusing spiritually and emotionally, para mas nahahanda ko ‘yung sarili ko na kapag emotional ‘yung journey nung character ko, magawa ko nang maayos.” INSIDE SHOWBIZ WEEKLY MARCH 2018 INSIDE SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE INSIDE SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE His PHR stint is also a comeback of sorts because his first TV series project was also aPHR installment. He was part of the supporting cast in the following PHR series: The Substitute Bride, Midnight Phantom, Kristine, and Alyna. On his latest PHR, JM is paired with an actress whom he has never worked with before. Plus, he is the main actor with a leading lady who is 10 years his junior. REFRESHING TANDEM When news broke out that Barbie Imperial was JM’s leading lady, such announcement was not warmly welcomed by a few. Some critics point out that Barbie is lacking in acting skills, fearing that the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) alumna will fall short whenever she has to measure up to JM’s acting skills. JM was quick to defend his new screen partner. “Ganoon naman talaga. Lahat naman kami as artists dumadaan doon sa doubts. Pero maganda nga ‘yun dahil challenging. Actually, same din naman ‘yung pressure sa akin. Sinasabi na ganiyan [magaling] ako, paano kung hindi?” He laughs. “Eh ‘di sablay din. Parehas lang ang amount of pressure samin ni Barbie. Depende lang kung paano namin i-handle.” This interview was held on just their fifth day of working together on the set. So far, JM says his working experience with Barbie has been all good. INSIDE SHOWBIZ WEEKLY MARCH 2018 “Relaxed lang tapos sobrang gaan,” he says. “She’s very down-to- earth, madaling maka-connect sa kaniya at seryoso siya sa trabaho.” Barbie adds, “Tahimik talaga si JM. Mabait pero makulit din. Seryoso ‘pag dating sa work.” She admits to still feeling nervous whenever JM is around. “Na- pressure ako kasi two years palang ako sa showbiz tapos siya ang tagal-tagal na niya. Kaya thankful ako kasi ito na ‘yun, andito na.” Will their tandem work? JM would just like to keep things simple by letting the show speak for itself. “Para sa akin, No.1 ‘yung trust. Trust kay Barbie, sa sarili ko, sa director, sa team namin, at sa script.” SWEET YET SHY Their decade-long age gap has been slammed by some showbiz watchers. JM is 29 while Barbie is 19. Casting them based on their age gap, Barbie points out, was not done just for the heck of it. “‘Yung original story sa book talagang malayo ‘yung age gap ng characters. Abangan nalang nila ‘yung serye. I’m sure na magugustuhan nila.” JM doesn’t mind too, and his age certainly doesn’t show. He and Barbie both have child-like auras that make their pairing not just feasible, but great to see on screen. “Na-excite din ako at the same time dahil bago din sa akin na ma-pair up sa 10 years younger sa akin. Challenging din. Malayo ‘yung generation namin. Iba ‘yung humor niya, iba ‘yung humor ko. Iba ‘yung jargon niya, iba ‘yung sa akin.” Their smiles and jokes are quite frequent during the photo shoot in Anilao, Batangas. Despite their newfound comfortability, there is INSIDE SHOWBIZ WEEKLY MARCH 2018 INSIDE SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE INSIDE SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE INSIDE SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE INSIDE SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE INSIDE SHOWBIZ WEEKLY MARCH 2018 But they were able to hold their own, especially when they were asked to do sweet poses. They are pleasant to the eyes, for sure. MANY FIRSTS JM has already headlined several TV series and movies. He has also appeared in several indie films. He was even part ofAng TV 2 in 2001. His many years of showbiz experience should make him think that his new PHR project is just a walk in the park. But he thinks that his Adrian role is among the most difficult characters he has ever done. “Bago siya kasi ‘yung conflict ng characters ay galing sa past. May karga na siya at the very beginning of the story palang. ‘Yung iba ko kasing characters, na-e-engage palang doon sa conflict throughout the story,” he explains. Although PHR espouses kilig and romance, JM notes that Araw Gabi is deeper. “Based doon sa back story, medyo tragic na heavy drama.” Barbie has made more adjustments for her first lead role. “Masaya kasi first timeko rin ma pair up sa mas matanda sa akin. At ngayon ko lang na-experience ‘yung ganoon, unlike before kay Paulo Angeles na more on kulitan lang kami. Ngayon nakakatrabaho ko ‘yung matagal na talaga sa showbiz. Iba na siya. Mas seryoso na.” She also teases about something that she has done for the first time in her career: “Mayroong kissing scene with JM na sobrang bago sa akin kasi nasanay ako sa puro pabebe lang before, mga pa-cute lang.” Such intimate scenes are expected given that their show is PHR. Araw Gabi, based on the pocket book El Paraiso by Martha Cecilia, features the love story of hotel owner named Adrian and young lady named Michelle. INSIDE SHOWBIZ WEEKLY MARCH 2018 INSIDE SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE INSIDE SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE IN FIGHTING FORM As JM pointed out, he and Barbie have some differences. But there are also similarities between the two stars. Both love their families. They have also been resilient in life in the face of many struggles. JM has been relentless in his pursuit for a healthier and happier life. While his critics are fixated on him having to make a comeback for a second time, he is focused on getting himself back together. “‘Yung sobrang support and love ng family ko, friends, fans, and peers ang nagpa-realize sa akin na masarap mabuhay. Alam ko na by doing this [comeback], I’m helping myself. Baka may chance din na may matulungan ako na iba and doon sa opportunity na ‘yun, mas lalo kong natutulungan ‘yung sarili ko,” he confesses.
