With Amazon and Apple both having unveiled their offerings ready for the holiday spending extravaganza, consumers are faced with a choice, and judging by my mailbox, people are having a hard time making up their minds as to which is the best. So, let's put Apple's iPad Air up against Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX and see which comes out the winner. Note that the Kindle Fire HDX comes in two flavors – 7-inch and 8.9-inch – but for the purposes of this review I'll be focusing primarily on the 8.9-inch version. It's not just the HDX either. However, for me I'm currently drawing the line at 9.7 inches on the screen. I have a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and with my eyeglass prescription I find the size to be just a smidge too small. Sure I could go back and get my prescription adjusted but there will be a problem in my visible range somewhere. I already got custom made glasses so I could do 3 things simultaneously: 1. Read a document lying flat on the table in front of me. 2. Easily see my full laptop screen behind the document 3. See the person across the conference table lengthwise to determine if they were smiling or smirking. Adjusting for a smaller tablet screen will likely upset that balance. Still the HDX is awesome and my mom or niece is getting my HD, they may have to fight over it. greywolf7 1 November, 2013 16:48 Reply 15 Votes Similar "Amazon includes Unlimited FREE cloud storage with Kindle HDX for all Amazon content" Apple does the same for iTunes content. rbgaynor 1 November, 2013 18:32 Reply 19 Votes converted by Web2PDFConvert.com Just not very well Just nowhere near as well integrated into the system or as easy to use as on a Kindle. With the kindle it is one click access and you barely notice that you are going between local and cloud content. That is not the case with my iphone, although I do not own an ipad so maybe that is somewhat better integrated, but that is not what I have heard. lynnneez 3 November, 2013 05:31 Reply 13 Votes Very well.. IMO If you go to the music app on ios, and are signed into iTunes account, all your purchased music is all there. Same with videos. Contacts integrated. Pictures integrated (with photo stream). No hassle for me at all. Feels like no cloud storage transfers. That's for me anyway. Murphy Mulvane 4 December, 2013 04:26 Reply Vote Yep It's true, the tablet is more stable than the iPad with iOS 7 and certainly more stable than the Nexus 7 FHD! slickjim 2 November, 2013 00:06 Reply 8 Votes One note though... Streaming prime instant video leaves you with a dead tablet after 5 hours! Nowhere near what Amazon claims. slickjim 3 November, 2013 18:54 Reply 10 Votes There are considerations to those 5 hours Slickjim: Screen brightness, network adapter, battery percentage when you started. As well as content viewed. That is asking a lot, I mean come on. If you are watching movies back to back via network, no it will not last. But if you are watching movies back to back from a 32gb microSD then it would be longer. The network adapter is drawing power as well as the gpu. I think it's more than enough for a coast to coast flight. There are microUSB battery packs if you need more. And who know under what conditions the battery tests were made. Often companies cannot even fathom what the user will be doing. Or how many background apps will be running. HoosierNewman 16 November, 2013 18:06 Reply 11 Votes Ok, I was surprised I figured it would be the same old, same old. I was surprised with the final verdict. And pleased actually about the terrific competition that is building in the tablet market. necessaryevil converted by Web2PDFConvert.com 1 November, 2013 12:38 Reply 19 Votes Competition Yeah- but the consumer is losing The consumers are being hit left and right with what is allowed into the market. There shelves full of junk tablets that barely run Android and cannot run many apps. Off brands where there is no support, non-standard charge ports, proprietary interfaces, and loaded with crapware that you cannot even interact with other Android users. Some of the strong considerations I tell users are "Will it run Skype?", "Will it connect to Google Play?" and System Memory and microSD Cards that it supports? Can you find a replacement charge cable in stores? Don't get tricked and have your kids disappointed or fill up the junk drawer. You know what I mean- those electronics items you purchased but rarely or cannot use because it takes a needle pin charger that Radio Shack don't have or the Shin-Wah BirdKing adapter is not on eBay. HoosierNewman 16 November, 2013 18:17 Reply 25 Votes @Adrian Kingsley-Hughes I decided some time back that I will not read multi page articles from zdnet. I am here to just go on the record that I right away skipped to the last page instead of reading the article. In future, I will close the page if it shows a multi page article if zdnet is not getting modern regarding articles. spicycheeks 1 November, 2013 12:42 Reply 55 Votes You got THAT right But—but—if the article is on a single page, can ZDNet thrust as many ads in front of our eyeballs? paul613 1 November, 2013 14:32 Reply 35 Votes Wait, you see ads? NoAxToGrind 1 November, 2013 16:07 Reply 18 Votes This is not a review To say this is a review when the reviewer doesn't even have a 8.9" Kindle HDX is a joke. derky 1 November, 2013 16:25 Reply 22 Votes Worse It's worse than a joke.. this article goes by the spec sheet.. and because Amazon claims a longer battery life, "therefore the HDS wins". Come on, I hate Apple with a vengeance as much as the next guy, but at the very least put both of them together, looping the same movie on similar brightness and then watch which one lasts longest. Anything else is just wasting everyone's time including your own. Han CNX 1 November, 2013 19:13 Reply 36 Votes Brilliant remark Kindle HDX is a joke??? How many hours did you work on editing your comment? I mean that is utterly brilliant. I've actually spent a long time investigating options and I see them as a pretty serious player in the tablet market. My guess is the HDX is going to sell like crazy. The amazon environment is becoming more and more helpful to me all the time. The fact that you can download movies (does anyone else let you do that???) with the HDX truly sets it apart from everyone else at this point.

  • Boisvert-Storey-Sony Case Brief
Storey C204 Summer 2014 Case Study BE MOVED SITUATION Sony Corporation is a 68-year old multinational based in Tokyo. In 2012, the tech giant employed 173,000 people, with corporate headquarters in Japan, Europe, and America. In May 2014, the company was down to 146,300, cutting 26,700 as part of CEO Kaz Hirai’s “One Sony” plan. Recently, the firm eVen sold former office buildings in Tokyo for $156 million (Inagaki). This followed a similar $1.2 billion sale in 2013. After seVeral years of losses, Sony’s situation appears critical. In the last fiscal year, the company lost $1.25 billion. EVen the gaming diVision, where the Playstation console family (PS2, PS3, PS4) is projected to sell 17 million units this year, lost $78 million (Quarterly Results). There are many causes: Sony’s jettisoning of its PC brand Vaio, the poor performance and planned spinoff of Sony’s teleVision diVision, PS4 launch and marketing costs, the struggling PSVita, R&D costs for Sony’s Project Morpheus, and the fluctuation of exchange rate markets. For the current year, Sony is projecting a $489 million loss. How sustainable is Sony’s current business model? Will the success of the PS4 lead to renewed profitability for the games diVision and the company as a whole? Perhaps opportunities in new markets can spark a turn-around. The company’s core businesses are electronic entertainment (Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Entertainment) and hardware (Sony Mobile Communications and Sony Electronics). Though it also dabbles in financial serVices, publishing, and medical imaging, electronics represents roughly two-thirds of the corporation’s reVenue (Sony Annual Report 2011, 2013).

  • The Sims and the Need for Fantasy Roxanne Daniels History of Computer Game Design Prof
The Sims and the Need for Fantasy Roxanne Daniels History of Computer Game Design Prof. Henry Lowood The Sims, which has become one of the most popular games on the planet, will soon see its sixth expansion pack, and has already been converted into both a console game and a massively multiplayer online experience. What was significant about the original game that it generated such a large and committed fan base? We will look first at reasons for the game’s popularity, and try to elucidate why it appeals to such a broad range of individuals, then move into the history of the game’s conception and the path of its development, from the original Sims to the Sims Online. Since its release in February of 2000, over 8 million copies of The Sims have been sold, making it “the biggest-selling computer game of all time.”1 In a chart complied by the NPD Group of the 2002 top ten best-selling PC games in North America, five of the ten slots are occupied by The Sims or one of its various expansion packs. The original game comes in at number five, almost three years after its initial release.2 Much of The Sims’ success is due to its wide appeal; it attracts women and men, committed and casual gamers, adults and children.3 This popularity can be contributed to a variety of factors. Serious gamers may appreciate the uniqueness of the game’s concept4, while casual gamers may appreciate the lack of violence5. These qualities alone, however, would not be sufficient to generate the obsessive devotion that can be observed on any number of Sims fan sites, nor would they probably sustain the sales of the expansion packs, which, as we noted above, are topping sales lists every year.

  • View Annual Report
2014 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Stockholder: 2014 was a year of progress and transformation. We continued to grow and expand our leading student‐first connected learning platform, the Student Hub, while accelerating our business model from print to digital with an aim to unlock greater shareholder value. We believe that Chegg’s Student Hub is more important and needed than ever. The U.S. high school and college demographic is approximately 34 million strong and this group is digitally empowered and self‐directed. They believe deeply that technology is enriching their lives by helping them to more easily and efficiently connect with the people, places and things that matter to them. We’ve seen the impact of this in major industries such as media (Netflix), transportation (Uber), and commerce (eBay). Yet when it comes to higher education ‐ arguably the most critical stage in their lives ‐ each step of the way remains stubbornly tethered to dated and antiquated processes that are not only slow and indirect but built to serve multitudes of other constituents ahead of the student. Chegg is disrupting this dated and antiquated higher education system by putting students first and building an ecosystem of tools and services to empower students to improve their own outcomes. Through the Student Hub, students can research schools and get matched to scholarships and colleges online; attain required course materials more cheaply and efficiently; access learning tools that help them master complex content faster; and map their careers while connecting with employers in their field of interest. In essence, our Student Hub is the digital platform empowering today’s self‐directed student throughout the higher education process.

  • Anthony Harris October 2014
Anthony Harris October 2014 Summary Understanding the financial relationships between Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) providers such as Flextronics, Foxconn and Jabil and the Brand Names of consumer electronics is crucial in all efforts to improve working conditions in the sector. According to Tony Harris, so far most efforts to improve workers conditions have been directed at tragedy event reaction, audits, naming and shaming and union representation yet all have fallen short of expectations. Tony Harris is retired after years of experience in the sector, and supporting the goals of the GoodElectronics Network and the makeITfair project, says whether we like it or not, money is the driving factor for all business decisions. Environmental concerns, compliance to health and safety and worker representation etc. are secondary or tertiary ‘add-on’s in the primary nature of business decision makers. Mr. Harris shows where the economic tension between EMS providers and the brands comes from and how these billion dollar tensions play out on the backs of impoverished workers who are willing to give up their night’s sleep for a few dollars more for basic cost coverage as well as remittance to feed their families. In the following back ground article he shows it is all about margins and explains the standard mark-up on the factory price, the technique of Purchase Price Variance (PVV) and the Profit Life Cycle of fast moving consumer electronics. In other words, how does a $100 electronic factory priced product become a $500 consumer product while the people making that product receive so little under marginalized operating conditions? About the author The author Anthony Harris worked from 1979–1993 for Philips Electronics as Senior consultant Video product safety and liability and Divisional Quality Manager for: Video recording, Passive components and medical systems.
