Re-evaluating Syndicalist Opposition to the First World War Abstract It has been argued that support for the First World War by the important French syndicalist organisation, the Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT) has tended to obscure the fact that other national syndicalist organisations remained faithful to their professed workers’ internationalism: on this basis syndicalists beyond France, more than any other ideological persuasion within the organised trade union movement in immediate pre-war and wartime Europe, can be seen to have constituted an authentic movement of opposition to the war in their refusal to subordinate class interests to those of the state, to endorse policies of ‘defencism’ of the ‘national interest’ and to abandon the rhetoric of class conflict. This article, which attempts to contribute to a much neglected comparative historiography of the international syndicalist movement, re-evaluates the syndicalist response across a broad geographical field of canvas (embracing France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Britain and America) to reveal a rather more nuanced, ambiguous and uneven picture. -

Young This dissertation examines the causes, context, and legacies of the 1927-1928 Colorado coal strike in relationship to the history of labor organizing and coalmining in both Colorado and the United States. While historians have written prolifically about the Ludlow Massacre, which took place during the 1913- 1914 Colorado coal strike led by the United Mine Workers of America, there has been a curious lack of attention to the Columbine Massacre that occurred not far away within the 1927-1928 Colorado coal strike, led by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). -

Dear Colleagues: Congratulations on your election. You take office at one of the most critical moments in the history of our country and union. This moment calls for bold leadership as our union responds to three intersecting crises. We are living in an era of extreme economic inequality and Corporate Power. We have seen the largest redistribution of wealth in our nation’s history and the lowest unionized workforce in decades. In 2020 we also faced the threat, destruction, and tragedy of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst the devastation of COVID-19, we have found ourselves confronting the plague of racism in America, which has been rampaging in our communities since long before the pandemic. I have been proud of the actions our union has taken to dismantle anti-Black racism and we have so much more work to do. I know that together we are up to the task of confronting these challenges. We can continue building our union’s power through new organizing, bargaining strong contracts, and building independent political power behind a working class agenda. As unprecedented as the COVID-19 pandemic is, CWAers have been on the front lines every day, keeping people informed, connected, and safe during this difficult time. And if we are to make progress in tearing down racism in this country and in our union, we must listen to the experiences of Black CWA members and all Black workers. Every white union member, Black union member, Latino union member, and every ally must fight and organize for Black lives. Unions have a duty to fight for power, dignity and the right to live for every working-class person in every place. -

This is a civil action brought pursuant to Section 301 of the Labor Management Relations Act, 29 U.S.C. § 185(a) (the “LMRA”), to enforce the no strike provisions of a collective bargaining agreement. 2. UAW Insight on "Right to Work"
UAW INSIGHT The following information is taken from the Indiana State AFL-CIO web page at: http://in.aflcio.org/statefed/index.cfm?action=article&articleID=82b66b07-ff6d-4e9d-925e- b5f3e7deb01c What is “right to work?” “Right to work” laws (allowed by the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947) prevents employers and employees from negotiating a type of agreement (a union security clause) that requires all workers who receive the benefits of a collective bargaining agreement to pay their share of the costs of representing them. These laws require unions to represent every eligible employee, whether or not he or she pays dues. In other words, “right to work” laws allow workers to pay nothing and still get all the benefits of union membership, collective bargaining and contract enforcement. Right to work has nothing to do with worker rights vis-à-vis their employer. It does not impact “employment-at-will” relationships. It has nothing to do with unemployment. 22 states currently have “right to work” laws (most of them are rural and Southern) and most of them enacted the legislation shortly after the passage of Taft-Hartley. What is a union security agreement? A union security agreement is the product of negotiation between employer and union and requires that, after a union has become an authorized representative of the employees in a bargaining unit, all employees in that unit must pay their fair share of the cost of that representation. Pursuant to federal law, when a union has been authorized it has a legal duty to represent every employee in the bargaining unit without regard to whether that employee is a participant in the union, or any other factor. -

Competing Marxist Theories on the Temporal Aspects of Strike Waves: Silver’S Product Cycle Theory and Mandel’S Long Wave Theory
Competing Marxist Theories on the Temporal Aspects of Strike Waves: Silver’s Product Cycle Theory and Mandel’s Long Wave Theory Eddie Cottle, Rhodes University, South Africa ABSTRACT Despite the profound changes in capitalist development since the industrial revolution, strike waves and mass strikes are still a feature of the twenty-first century. This article examines two Marxist theories that seek to explain the temporal aspects of strike waves. In the main, I argue that Silver’s product cycle theory, suffers from an over-determinism, and that turning point strike waves are not mainly determined by lead industries. Mandel’s long wave theory argues that technological innovations tend to cluster and thus workers in different industries feature prominently in strike waves. By re-examining and comparing two competing Marxist theories on the temporality of strike waves and turning points, I will attempt to highlight the similarities but also place emphasis on where the theories differ. I examine the applicability of the theories to the South African case, and reference recent world events in order to ascertain the explanatory power of the competing theories. In the main I argue that Silver’s product cycle lead theory does not fit the South African experience. This article examines two Marxist theories that seek to explain the temporal aspects of strike waves. Both theories are especially concerned with strikes that alter labour–capital relations, or turning points, and both focus on the world-historical scale.
