Getting Around Mozambique: Transport Guide by newsdesk By Road Buses are the cheapest mode of transport in Mozambique but regular services only operate between major towns where roads are in motorable condition. In rural areas, people negotiate rides and fares on converted passenger trucks (chapa-cems) or regular trucks (camions). On the services that do operate, carry food and water as the stops are literally few and far between. Foreigners should also ensure all their travel documents are in order and must carry them on their person as the authorities conduct regular and strict checks for documentation. Cabs are rarely available outside the main cities but there are plenty of car rental firms happy to hire vehicles to foreigners who pay in hard currency. For those planning to drive themselves, insist on hiring a sturdy 4WD and check its roadworthiness. An International Driving Permit is necessary, traffic drives on the left of the road and insurance is recommended. There is a fairly extensive network of gas stations along the major routes though not in the reserves and game parks. Driving after dark outside of the cities can be dangerous as car hijackings and highway robberies are commonplace. Stray cattle and vehicles without headlamps are the other hazard on country roads, which are anyway, poorly maintained. The bus service in the capital, Maputo is better than most and actually covers a large amount of territory. The long-distance bus depot is on Avenida 24 de Julho just beyond Praca 16 de Junho in Maputo. In all the cities, taxis are metered and drivers still expect to be tipped. -

GENERAL OVERVIEW Mozambique was colonized by Portugal for nearly 500 years before gaining independence in 1975. The new country faced a devastating civil war and fiscal difficulties upon independence, and was unable to develop a secure government or economy until the 1990s. Free and fair elections, as well as economic reform, improved overall stability. However, high-level corruption in the Mozambican government appears to have increased in recent years. Mozambique faces many additional challenges today, including a struggling economy, extremely limited infrastructure, and high levels of crime and disease. Mozambique is located in southeastern Africa, and borders Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the Indian Ocean. The climate is generally tropical, though some variation exists depending on location. Mozambique's capital, Maputo, is located in the south. Virtually all of the Mozambican population is ethnically African and divided into smaller tribal groups. The official language is Portuguese, though Emakhuwa is most widely spoken. English is also spoken in tourist areas. The population is religiously diverse, with some 50 percent practicing Christianity of some form. -

According to UN estimates, the region’s GDP is expected to grow 30 percent in the next five years. And in the next 35 years, the continent will account for more than half of the world’s population growth. It is obvious that the potential in Africa is substantial. However, African economies are still to unlock their potential. The aviation sector in Africa faces restrictive air traffic regimes preventing the continent from using major economic benefits. Aviation is vital for the progress in Africa. It provides 6,9 million jobs and US$ 80 million in GDP with huge potential to increase. Many African governments have therefore, made infrastructure developments in general and airport related investments in particular as one of their priorities to facilitate future growth for their respective country and continent as a whole. Investment is underway across a number of African airports, as the region works to provide the necessary infrastructure to support the continent’s growth ambitions. South Africa is home to most of the airports handling 1+ million passengers in Southern Africa. According to international data 4 out of 8 of those airports are within South African Territory. Na sequência da declaração da OMS, o Presidente da República, considerando eminente um desastre humanitário no país, resultante do COVID-19, declarou o 2 Estado de Emergência, através do Decreto Presidencial nº 11/2020, de 30 de Março. Mozambique Transaction cost study Research commissioned by the CTA Draft 2 October 2008 1 Introduction Africa, compared to other regions, has the highest incidence of poverty. With research showing a positive link between exports and growth, a rise in exports out of Africa is essential for sustained growth of the continent. However, Africa has been unsuccessful to capture the international market and make use of this vehicle to steer away from poverty. How can this situation be altered? Until now the private sector has contributed very little to growth in Africa, mainly due to the crowding out by the public sector. There is a growing consensus amongst researchers that a thriving private sector is crucial for sustained economic growth and a thriving export sector. The remaining question is what role government should play. The two extremes seem to be on the one hand a government that steers the export sector in a specific direction; and on the other a government that plays no further role than to create an environment supportive of the private sector. The effectiveness of special enterprise support schemes, in which ‘wise’ planners detect a need, throw resources at it, and micro-engineer the outcomes, has been questioned in research. The World Bank publications are highly sceptical about deliberate government action aimed at improving the performance of enterprises and developing competitive advantages. They warn that strategies that claim to pick winners can go spectacularly wrong and are expensive gambles with public funds. The alternative is to decrease the role of government by reforming the regulatory environment for business, for example the simplification of business registration procedures as well as reforms of labour regulations and property titling (UNIDO). -

Mozambique A Land of Contrasts When Portuguese explorers reached Mozambique in 1498, Arab-trading settlements had existed along the coast and outlying islands for several centuries. From about 1500, Portuguese trading posts and forts became regular ports of call on the new route to the east. Later, traders and prospectors invaded the interior regions seeking gold and slaves. Although both Portuguese and Arabic influences have gradually diminished, there still remains a rich tapestry of these cultures within the region today. Take a long walk on a far-flung sandbar at sunset, enjoy mouth-watering fresh seafood, swim in the warm tropical ocean, all whilst spotting dolphins and the rare dugong. Mozambique is a truly breath-taking mosaic of culture and tropical beaches. PASSPORT & VISA REQUIREMENTS Please note that you will need two blank pages in your passport for immigration. Your passport must be valid for six months after your departure date from Mozambique. All nationalities, except South African passport holders, require a Visa to enter Mozambique. Citizens from countries that require a Visa to enter Mozambique will be able to get these on arrival at 44 border posts in Mozambique, including Maputo International Airport and the Port of Maputo, as well as border posts such as Ressano Garcia, Ponto D’ouro, Giriyondo, Vilanculos Airport, Inhambane Airport, Beira Airport, Pemba Airport and Nampula Airport, among others. The Mozambican government has doubled the cost of entry Visas with immediate effect. All single entry Visas applied for in foreign travellers’ countries of origin will be affected by the fee increase. The cost of a single entry Visa, valid for 30 days, has increased from US $50 to US $102. -
