EFD Kid's Free Movie History

EFD Kid’s Free Movie History This year marks the 43rd annual E.F.D. Kid’s Free Movie. It also marks a 43 year partnership with the Excelsior Dock Cinema, a nine year sponsorship from Excelsior Real Estate, and 17 years of support for the local food shelf, ICA. For over 30 years the movie was sponsored by an anonymous donator, when the anonymous donor changed operations Excelsior Real Estate came to the rescue in 2006 and has been the movie sponsor ever since. The young citizens of the Excelsior Fire District have been the guests of the E.F.D. Firefighters at a special screening of a children’s movie for over 4 decades. When the partnership was first formed in 1971, the children would simply come to the movie theater on a selected date and get into a kid friendly movie for free. It was only a couple of years after the first free movie and the firefighters decide to invite old Saint Nick himself to greet the kids and give away treats after the movie. In 1997, Sparky, the Fire Dog, joined Santa Claus and the treats were put in bags with fire prevention educational materials and the kids started to receive the Kid’s Free Movie Grab Bags. In 2006 local business joined in the fun and began to donate items to be placed in the Kid’s Free Movie Grab Bags. In 1998, the Excelsior Fire District started to request non-perishable food items for admission to the movie and in 2001 started excepting cash donations. A total over 6,853 pounds (over 3 tons) have been collected and $1.644 dollars have been donated to the ICA Food Shelf. The Kids Free Movie has evolved in 43 years, from a free movie for the kids, to a fundraiser and a memorable day in the life of a child. The Journal of Specialised Translation Issue 17 – January 2012 The translation of linguistic stereotypes in animated films: a case study of DreamWorks’ Shrek and Shark Tale Pilar González Vera, University of Zaragoza ABSTRACT As a source for the socialisation of the child, animated films have attracted the attention of sociolinguistics which has traditionally been interested in the interaction between language and society. The role of language in the process of socialisation and in the creation and perpetuation of stereotypes is the focus of attention of this research. This study concentrates on the portrayal and translation of stereotypes on the basis of gender through the manipulation of the discourse in the DreamWorks‘ films Shrek and SharkTale. With this aim, the research is divided into three sections. The first one provides a brief introduction to the concept of stereotypes, the second is devotedto the study of the role of translation inthe representation of gender stereotypes in the cases of two female characters, Fiona and Lola, and two male characters, Donkey and Lenny; and the third one presents the conclusions drawn from the previous analysis. The concept of stereotypes Films are part of cross-cultural communication and a way of reflecting other identities and cultures. Animated films have been, in principle, characterised by their simple plots and their classification of characters into two groups: the heroes and the villains. This simplification of reality is known as stereotyping, a concept introduced by Lippmann in 1922 (1922). Cultural studies have demonstrated that stereotyping is a fundamental mechanism of perception and categorisation, without which orientationand survival in a complex society such as ours would be virtually impossible (Rieger 2006: 279).

The Art of “Including Art” in Animation: DreamWorks’ Intertextual Games for All Rebeca Cristina López González. Universidad de Vigo, Spain. [email protected] Abstract Art forms become interrelated when intertextual phenomena occur. The choice of previous art forms to create humour may seem to be a playful game, but it is the result of many kinds of inserted messages. Fourteen animated feature films by DreamWorks have been analysed and classified in depth (by using Sebeok’s (1986) intertextual categories, which were also described by Hatim & Mason (1990)), in order to demonstrate how animation is an art that encompasses other artistic productions. Firstly, art and animation will be defined in order to, secondly, use the corpus to exemplify the intertextual connections from other art forms. Lastly, the final quantitative and qualitative results will substantiate the conclusion that these productions by DreamWorks are an example of artistic cinematographic intertextuality. El uso de formas artísticas previas para crear humor puede parecer un juego pero es el resultado de la inserción de varios tipos de mensajes en un texto/discurso. Se analizan y clasifican en profundidad catorce películas de animación creadas por DreamWorks (se emplea para ello las categorías intertextuales propuestas por Sebeok (1986) descritas, a su vez, por Hatim & Mason (1990)), con el propósito de demostrar cómo la animación es un arte que engloba a otras producciones artísticas. Production Information When California girl Susan Murphy (REESE WITHERSPOON) is unwittingly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall. The military jumps into action and Susan is captured and put into a secret government compound.
