Is it Creation, Evolution or Intelligent Design? Was there a “Big Bang”? What is a “Black Hole?” Are the so-called Dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible? Are Science and Religion compatible Friends or incompatible Foes? Krutch) PRELUDE “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes” (Matt 11:25). Although he opposed Christianity and passionately defended paganism, Lycaeus Proclus (410- 485AD), the Greek philosopher and dialectician, wrote this opinion in one of his commentaries: “The first principle in NeoPlatonism is the One (to Hen). It is the principle which produces all Being. For this reason, the NeoPlatonists thought that the One could not itself be a being. If it were a being, it would have a particular nature, and so could not be universally productive of all being. Because it is beyond being (epekeina tes ousias is a phrase from Plato's Republic 509b), it is also beyond thought, because thinking requires the determinations which belong to being: the division between subject and object, and the distinction of one thing from another. For this reason, even the name The One isn't a positive name, but rather the most non- multiple name we can think of, a name derived from our own inadequate conception of the simplicity of the first principle. The One causes all things by conferring unity on them, and in NeoPlatonism existence, unity, and form tend to become equivalent. The One causes things to exist by donating unity, and the particular manner in which a thing is one is its form (a dog and a house are one in different manners, for example). Because the One makes things exist by giving them the unity which makes them what they are, the Neo-Platonists thought of it also as the source of the good of everything. So the other name for the One is the Good. The first principle isn't double, however. Instead, all things have a double relation to it, as coming from it (One) and then being oriented back towards it to receive their perfection or completion (Good)”. Wikipedia’s commentary on the opinion: “The particular characteristic of Proclus' system is his insertion of a level of individual ones, called henads (Greek hen from neutral heis “One” and suffix ad “same”) between the One itself and the divine Intellect, which is the second principle. The henads are beyond being, like the One himself, but they stand at the head of chains of causation (seirai or taxeis) and in some manner give to these chains their particular character. They are also identified with the traditional Greek gods, so one henad might be Apollo and be the cause of all things apollonian, while another might be Helios and be the cause of all sunny things. The henads serve both to protect the One himself from any hint of multiplicity, and to draw up the rest of the universe towards the One, by being a connecting, intermediate stage between absolute unity and determinate multiplicity. In terms of his sources, the One is like a combination of the Platonic Form of the Good, because it confers being and intelligibility on all things, and Aristotle's Unmoved Mover, which is the final cause of all things. Coming between the One and the henads (some scholars think after the henads) are the two principles of First Limit and First Infinity, which are the principles of the fertile production (Infinity or Unlimited, apeiron) and the controlled nature of the production (Limit, peras) of all things. Plotinus speaks about the generation of Intellect from the One, and Intellect's attempt to return to the One in a thinking which is also a desiring. Proclus systematizes this production through a threefold movement: of remaining, procession, and return, (mone, proodos, epistrophe). Intellect remains in the One, which means that it has the One as its origin. It proceeds from the One, which means that it comes to be as a separate entity. But it returns to the One, which means that it doesn't cut itself off from its source, but receives the good which is its identity from the One. This threefold motion is used by Proclus to structure all levels of his system below the One and above material reality, so that all things except those mentioned remain, proceed, and return.” (Wikipedia web site/Proclus). Allow me to ponder and wonder: if a pagan could write such a compelling statement without believing in God, what is our excuse not to see God in his creation? And second, if we can not fathom what he, the mortal, has written, how can we conceive and perceive what God, the omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and more importantly immortal, has written? Our world, since the beginning to the end of time, is and always will be no more than a vast classroom in our unending journey towards increased knowledge through discoveries and observation. A learning institution of its own for all ages and all walks of life, and I do invite you to explore with me that classroom of ongoing show of pandemonium and commotions. The validity of a theory is generally accepted in the scientific milieu if no one disputes or proves it wrong. It is and will remain a theory, educated or uneducated guess and speculation. Based on the few questions I posed at the beginning of this study, I will show and prove from the Bible itself that our biblical creation story is parallel and analog to that of atheists’ evolution theory on all fronts except that man evolved from Lemur (This type of primate was the evolutionary predecessor of monkeys and apes (simians), which I will also prove them wrong through their own theories. I will give you the tools to defend religiously, scientifically and academically not theoretically our steadfast faith in the creation story. The following story is just the right one to realize the flying debris of theories: “One day a university professor challenged his students with this question: “Did God create everything that exists?” A student bravely replied: “Yes, he did, God created everything?" The professor answered: "If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are then God is evil". The student became quiet before such an answer. The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth”. Another student raised his hand and said: "Can I ask you a question, professor?" "Of course", replied the professor. The student stood up and asked: "Professor, does cold exist?” "What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?" The students snickered at the young man's question. The young man replied: "In fact, sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody and every object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (- 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have too little heat. The student continued: "Professor, does darkness exist?" The professor responded: "Of course it does". The student replied: "Once again you are wrong, sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present". Finally the young man asked the professor: "Sir, does evil exist?" Now uncertain, the professor responded: "Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. "These manifestations are nothing else but evil". To this the student replied: "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love, that exist just as does light and heat.
