League Yamazaki Nabisco Cup of 1992, the year before the J. League proper began, giving birth to the amazing fan base we see today. With the start of the J. League in 1993, however, Reds’ defensive frailty made the going hard and the team sank to the bottom of the table. Reds won only rarely in those early days even at their first home, the Komaba Stadium. The fans were disappointed but stood by their team. In fact, the support only grew. A German manager, Holger Osieck, took charge in 1995. Guido Buchwald and Uwe Bein had signed as players the previous summer. The team gained new balance with their leader- ship and climbed high in the league. The title was not to be, however, and the club instead again plumbed the depths in 1999 when it dropped to Division Two. Even on the day of darkest despair, however, when Reds’ relegation was sealed, the 20,000 fans who packed the Komaba Stadium did not turn against their team. They showed their commitment come what may by singing on and on: “We are Reds! Nach 391 Bundesligaspielen, drei Deutschen Meisterschaften, zwei Siegen im DFB-Pokal, einem Sieg im UEFA Cup und dem Gewinn der Europameisterschaft 1996 wechselte Thomas Helmer 2002 zum Sportjournalismus. Für Sat.1 berichtete er von der WM 2002 aus Japan und Südkorea, 2004 wechselte er zum DSF. Von 2006 – 2009 moderierte Thomas Helmer den Profitalk „Bundesliga - Die Spieltaganalyse“. Gemeinsam mit seinen Gästen analysierte und kommentierte der 68-fache Nationalspieler in 60 Minuten die Highlights des Bundesliga-Wochenendes.     Die Urawa Red Diamonds (jap. 浦和レッドダイヤモンズ, Urawa reddo daiyamonzu), oft auch kurz Urawa Reds genannt, sind ein japanischer Fußballverein aus dem Stadtteil Urawa der Verbundgemeinde Saitama. In der Saison 2014 spielte der Club in der höchsten Spielklasse Japans, der J. League Division 1. Die Heimatstadien sind das Saitama Stadium (Kapazität 63.700) und das Urawa Komaba Stadium (Kapazität 21.500). Im Jahr 1950, als Japans Fußball noch von Universitätsmannschaften dominiert wurde, wurde das Team in Urawa als Betriebssportgruppe eines Automobil-Unternehmens gegründet. 1990 wurde die Mannschaft an Mitsubishi Motors übertragen, bevor 1992 die Umwandlung der Mannschaft in ein eigenständiges Unternehmen erfolgte. Damit ist der Verein älter als die meisten seiner Mitstreiter in der J. League, die zumeist um 1970 gegründet wurden. Als im Zuge der Olympischen Sommerspiele 1964 in Tokyo Fußball immer beliebter wurde und die Firmen den Sport als Werbeplattform entdeckten, wurde der Verein ausgebaut. Als Ergebnis dieser Arbeit war Mitsubishi mit vier Meisterschaften und vier Kaiserpokal-Siegen zwischen 1969 und 1982 das dominierende Team des Landes. Erwähnenswert ist hierbei, dass der Verein die Meisterschaft zwischen 1969 und 1978 zehn Jahre lang in Folge auf einem der ersten beiden Plätze beendete. Als 1992 der Entschluss zur Gründung einer Profiliga gefasst wurde, war Mitsubishi Gründungsmitglied der J.League. Wie andere Vereine auch legte sich der Club einen neuen, westlich angehauchten Namen zu: Urawa Red Diamonds . Damit nahm man einerseits Bezug auf den Besitzer Mitsubishi (dessen Firmenlogo aus drei roten Diamanten besteht), durch den umgangssprachlichen Spitznamen Reds und die Spielkleidung mit rotem Trikot, weißen Shorts und schwarzen Strümpfen verwies man zudem auf den englischen Spitzenclub Manchester United.
