VUHFHQWPLQLVWU\ZKLFK\RXUHFRJQL]HDVRQHRIVXFFHVVDQGIXOܾOOPHQWف\HVFULEHDPRPHQWLQ\RXUZRUVKLSSLQJFRPPXQLW' St. Paul’s is an ordinary parish with special people doing special things. When the pandemic lockdown was announced, St. Paul’s was closed just one Sunday before we began live-streaming our service. Our lay-led reopening committee addressed the issues arising from pausing in-person worship and developed plans for re-opening. Before retiring our rector gave us the momentum to continue improving our worship offerings including: • Lay-led Morning Prayer in the absence of a priest until our interim arrived • Choir members individually recording service music to be mixed into a single recording for broadcast • Comprehensive worship bulletins with full text and hymns emailed and USPS mailed before each service • Live-steaming each service via Zoom and Facebook • Posting weekly meditation videos during Advent. Our community’s ability to accomplish these tasks without a rector gave us a distinct "moment" of success and fulfillment. Working as a committed team, we were able to move forward, and we have begun a gradual opening under diocesan guidelines for in-person worship and continue to provide worship materials to those at home. How are your preparing yourselves for the Church of the future? St. Paul’s has approved the establishment of a Legacy Endowment Fund with seed money coming from the sale of the parish rectory. This is a strong proclamation that St. Paul’s intends to be a viable parish for years to come. Like all parishes, St. Paul’s needs and wants to grow; and like all parishes, we struggle with how to meet that challenge in 21st century, post-pandemic America. Smithfield is an older city, but more people are moving to this area for a better quality of life. The building of a large Amazon distribution center near Smithfield will bring 500 new jobs (and potential residents) to the area along with those commuting to the state capital in Raleigh. We are looking for ways to increase our visibility to new arrivals. Like many churches, we anticipate continuing our live-streams even after the lockdown ends. With funds from a diocesan grant, we have been able to purchase a high-quality camera for better live-streaming of services. Our Vestry is considering ways to collaborate with Grace in Clayton and Iglesia de San Jose, the Hispanic mission at St. Paul’s, as well as other churches in the Smithfield area. We believe that collaboration with others can benefit 3OHDVHSURYLGHZRUGVGHVFULELQJWKHJLIWVDQGVNLOOVHVVHQWLDOWRWKHIXWXUHOHDGHUVRI\RXUZRUVKLSSLQJFRPPXQLW\ pastoral, enthusiastic, good communicator, approachable, intelligent, sense of humor, visable 2IÀFHIRU Full Portfolio 7UDQVLWLRQ (last updated Jun 1, 2021) 0LQLVWU\ Ministry Portfolio St. Paul's Episcopal Church, North Carolina Contact: Rector / Vicar / Priest-in-Charge | Receiving Names until 07/15/21. 'HVFULEH\RXUOLWXUJLFDOVW\OHDQGSUDFWLFHIRUDOOW\SHVRIZRUVKLSVHUYLFHVSURYLGHGE\\RXUFRPPXQLW\ St. Paul’s is a traditional Rite Two community that loves to kneel and loves to sing from the 1982 hymnal. • Pre-Pandemic there was celebration of the Eucharist at 8:00 a.m. and an 11:00 a.m. • The 8:00 a.m. service has a single lay lector/EM with no music. • The 11:00 service includes a Crucifer, Torch Bearers, 1 or 2 EM’s, and lector with Sanctus bells plus a choir and congregational singing led by the organist/music director. • Music is important to our congregation and numerous members bought pipes to help pay for the Zimmer organ built in 1998. Also, our hand chime choir performs with instruments purchased with member donations. • Our glorious Christmas Eve service and music attract many residents of Smithfield and the surrounding area. • A station for healing prayers is offered to congregants following communion twice each month at both services. Iglesia de San Jose, our Hispanic mission sister congregation, meets at St. Paul’s and we have enjoyed joint worship with them occasionally. How do you practice incorporating others in ministry? St. Paul’s has traditional lay liturgical ministries, along with ushers, greeters, Altar Guild, choir/ hand chime choir members, and Lay healing prayer ministers. St. Paul’s also has a licensed lay preacher. St. Paul’s hosts a “Time and Talent Fair'' to publicize in-house and outreach ministries. Weekly announcements at each service as well as weekly email blasts, printed bulletins, and monthly newsletter articles written by the leaders/committee chairs promote opportunities for service and invite members to join in on our many committees and groups. We have active and passionate members who motivate others by their work and actions to join ministries including the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Episcopal Church Women, Daughters of the King, Book study, Vestry, Outreach and Social Justice Committee, Finance, Stewardship, and Sunday School, just to name a few. As a worshipping community, how do you care for your spiritual, emotional and physical well-being? St. Paul’s is a congregation that genuinely likes and cares for one another. Our spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being are connected as a part of the entire well-being of our community and are provided in many ways: • Prayer is an important part of our life together including Intercessory prayer during Eucharist, lay healing prayers, and the prayer ministry of Daughters of the King • St. Paul’s Eucharistic visitors look forward to resuming taking communion to members unable to attend service • Birthdays, anniversaries, illness, and loss of loved ones are acknowledged within our worship service prayer life and directly through personal visits and other communications • During the Pandemic, the ECW sent Easter greeting cards to every parishioner • Christian education is provided for all age groups on Sundays along with a mid-week bible study opportunity • Seasonal group studies occur during Advent and Lent • The altar flowers are delivered to the home-bound after Sunday service • Our outdoor labyrinth is accessible to all, including the larger community These spiritual-based activities provide a sense of care and contact that feeds our emotional and physical well-being. 2IÀFHIRU Full Portfolio 7UDQVLWLRQ (last updated Jun 1, 2021) 0LQLVWU\ Ministry Portfolio St. Paul's Episcopal Church, North Carolina Contact: Rector / Vicar / Priest-in-Charge | Receiving Names until 07/15/21. How do you engage in pastoral care for those beyond your worshipping community? St. Paul’s was the only Episcopal Church in the Smithfield area for many years. We helped launch a mission in the nearby town of Clayton about 25 years ago which is now a congregation known as Grace Episcopal. Parishioners helped build an orphanage and a school in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake which is still supported by some of our members. Johnston County has a large agricultural industry. Several members of St. Paul’s have served on the board of the Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry which is a joint program of the Dioceses of NC and East Carolina. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew offers annual fundraisers such as its annual wine tasting event and its Christmas tree sale. These events attract many non-parishioners from the surrounding community including many repeat customers. St. Paul’s clergy have been active participants in the Smithfield Ministry Group involving priests and pastors from several churches. This has included rotating preaching at participating churches as well as a joint Stations of the Cross service with First Presbyterian starting at St. Paul’s labyrinth. VLQYROYHPHQWLQHLWKHUWKHZLGHU&KXUFKRUJHRJUDSKLFDOUHJLRQف\HVFULEH\RXUZRUVKLSSLQJFRPPXQLW' During Smithfield’s annual Ham and Yam Festival, (https://www.johnstoncountync.org/ham-and-yam-festival), St. Paul’s provides free lemonade, water, and popcorn for people walking past the church. In addition, we open our Parish Hall to allow escape from the heat and access to clean restrooms which often results in requests for guided church tours. Our dedicated Outreach Committee leads our congregation in its community-oriented efforts including: • The Harbor House battered women’s shelter • The Smithfield Rescue Mission • Smithfield Area Ministries • Annual collection of school supplies for Johnston
