Truffaut's films—unlike those of Jean-Luc Godard, for example—do have a beginning, middle, and end, in that order, but his eye for cinema dominates. This is exquisite cinema. Believed to have fled the city from the Nazis, Lucas is conducting his pursuits while endeavouring to maintain his concealment within the basement of the playhouse. As the title might suggest, this time around the story revolves around a young man and his romances with two British women —in this case Claude Jean-Pierre Leaud, coming up with a creation quite distinct from Antoine Doinel , who falls for the virginal, sickly Muriel Brown Stacey Tendeter , only for an enforced separation to lead to a relationship with her older sister Ann Kika Markham. Truffaut, surprisingly didn't care for science fiction, but after a friend showed him Bradbury's Truffaut was always a more accessible filmmaker than Godard, his work less cynical and not as interested in trying to constantly push the cinematic boundaries or find new ways of expression, instead taking a vested interest in character and the French people. Lucas Steiner Christian Baltauss The film had the potential to tell such a strong story about art and the difficulties of expressing it during the occupation, but the film shies away from these issues and instead turns it into a basic drama story that never really delivered anything substantial. Last Metro : Director Francois Truffaut Writer But Deneuve is better and more beautiful than Laurent. In occupied Paris, an actress married to a Jewish theater owner must keep him hidden from the Nazis while doing both of their jobs. His are universal issues of human life , love , and spirit. The theme of death rarely attracts crowds. Many movie couples have no business being together. We all have a reason to be thankful to Bazin. His movies, even the least successful ones, are never saccharine or sentimental. Here he goes for a less artsy overall aesthetic, but rather goes for a much mainstream approach. As De Baecque and Toubiana put it:. The Holocaust is a profound movie theme, and France is in a unique position. Seriously speaking now, what a great movie. It also suggests that love and tragedy can be closely linked, as it ends in a murder-suicide when Catherine kills Jim and herself. I looked good, but it was another film about World War II. • Great Authors in French Cinema Course Description Course Structure
Institut de Langue et de Culture Françaises Institut Catholique de Paris Great authors in French cinema By Patricia Maincent Course description This film course will focus on the history of french cinema, from its scientific begin- ning at the end of the 19th century, along with the industrial revolution, through the diversity of representations in the 20 th century up to the beginning of the 21st. In order to embody those changes, we will study the important authors, whose contribu- tion have made french cinema unique in its style. Historical films will be the main guideline, but in its widest aspect, from opinion position to historical reenactment and how documentary becomes historical fact. This theme has been fully explored since the beginning of cinema, and that will allow us to question representation and its di- verse evolution along with society. Leading French filmmakers challenged this redis- covery of the past, guiding us through the analysis of the language of the moving im- age. Course structure Each course will develop chronologically one moment of french cinema focusing on one filmmaker and one film. but also the historical context, of the film’s release and History. Each film will be analysed in its filmic components, (sound, editing, camera movements..) and of course discussed ; history being interesting in order to have a better view on our world. Week 1 : from the pioneers to the cinema of enchantment From document to fiction, the Lumière Brothers and Georges Méliès The trip to the moon by George Méliès, 1902 The Lumiere Brothers’ first films, 1895-1897 Méliès’ creativity brought ingenuity and poetry to followers such as Jean Cocteau or Jacques Demy Week 2 : Poetic realism : french classical cinema with Jean Renoir As France experienced its first populist movement, with the Front Populaire in 1935 and before the deterioration of the European situation with the second world war, french cinema will develop its aesthetic.
