Plaistow & Kirdford Primary School Music Policy Approved by: Governing Body Approval Date: 02 May 2013 Due for review: Spring 2016 Mission Statement The teaching of music develops pupils’ ability to listen and appreciate a wide variety of music, compose, perform and to make judgements about musical quality. As an integral part of culture, past and present, it helps pupils understand themselves and relate to others, forging important links between the home, school and the wider world. It also increases self-discipline and creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfilment. Aims and Purposes (Objectives) By engaging children in making and responding to music, music teaching offers them opportunities for them to: Develop their understanding and appreciation of a wide range of different kinds of music, developing and extending their own interests and increasing their ability to make judgements of musical quality Acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to make music Develop listening skills, the ability to concentrate, creativity, intuition, aesthetic sensitivity, perseverance, self-confidence and sensitivity towards others Content During the foundation stage Children sing songs from a built repertoire, make music through the exploration of the different sounds of instruments and experiment with ways to changing them Children represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through music During key stage 1 To listen carefully and respond physically to a wide range of music To play musical instruments and sing a variety of songs from memory To add accompaniments and create short compositions, with increasing confidence, imagination and control To explore and enjoy how sounds and silence can create different moods and effects During key stage 2 To sing songs and play instruments with increasing confidence, skill, expression and awareness of their own contribution to a group or class performance To improvise, and develop their own musical compositions, in response to a variety of different stimuli with increasing personal involvement, independence and creativity To explore their thoughts and feelings through responding physically, intellectually and emotionally to a variety of music from different times and cultures Expectations As with other subjects the expectations are that most pupils will have reached: Level 2 by the end of Year 2 Level 3 by the end of Year 4 Level 4 by the end of Year 6 Entitlement At Plaistow and Kirdford Primary School, all pupils are entitled to participate in music. We teach music in line with the school's policies for racial equality, curriculum and planning, continuing professional development, teaching and learning and behaviour and discipline. Implementation and Resources At Plaistow and Kirdford Primary School, we follow the QCA scheme of work for music, which covers the national curriculum for music through composing, appraisal, listening and performing. Apart from the ‘Key 2 Music’ violin tuition in year 3, all class teachers plan and deliver the music curriculum in their classes, provide ICT in music opportunities for KS1 and KS2 and provide cross-curricular links where relevant. Monitoring and assessment in music will be in line with the whole school system for assessment in the foundation subjects. The music subject leader is responsible for the organisation of music resources. Tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments are stored in labelled trolleys in the smile room. Music ICT resources are stored in the ICT suite. Music books and published materials are stored in the main hall cupboard and the relevant year group classrooms. (See Appendix ii for resource lists). The class teacher is responsible for the disinfection of all school recorders prior to loan to their class. Extended curricular activities All pupils participate in a whole school singing practice for 30 minutes weekly. All Year 2 children have the opportunity to learn the recorder in the summer term using recorders and books provided by the school. Recorder club is offered to all children from year 2 onwards and for children with previous recorder playing experience. Choir club is offered to children from year 1 upwards. Violin tuition is offered to all pupils in year 3 through the West Sussex ‘Key 2 Music’ scheme. All pupils participating in this scheme will be loaned a violin, case and bow for the duration of the school year. A specialist violin teacher will plan and assess the wider opportunities lessons. The class teacher will participate and assist during the lesson. Additional violin, piano, keyboard, woodwind and guitar instrumental tuition is offered at the school on a weekly basis through the West Sussex Music Service. Each year all pupils perform a musical working on the musical aspects during the whole school sing and music lessons. Wider community links The school receives visits from the local church. Choir and recorder players perform at the Christmas PTA Fair. All choir members are offered the opportunity to sing in a Weald family schools’ concert each summer term. Future Developments In the future, the curriculum will be planned from 2 bases. These will be the simultaneous and progressive development of the elements of music and the ‘main idea’ in each national curriculum attainment level statement. Detailed information about these two bases is given in appendix (i). Appendix (i) The elements of music are: Pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and their use within structure. The national curriculum main ideas for Key stage 1 and 2 are: Reception and Year 1 – Pupils recognise and explore how sounds can be made and changed Year 2 – Pupils recognise and explore how sounds can be organised Year 3 and 4 – Pupils recognise and explore the ways sounds can be combined and used expressively Years 5 and 6 – Pupils identify and explore the relationship between sounds and how music reflects different intentions Year 6 and beyond – Pupils identify and explore musical devices and how music reflects time, place and culture Appendix (ii) Plaistow and Kirdford Primary School Percussion/Instrument Inventory Instrument No Instrument No Gato drum 2 Tambourines - 11 Headed Woodblocks 2 Tambourines – 1 Open Agogo Double Wood 3 Agogo Single Wood 2 Temple block 1 Claves 30 Cow bells 4 Vibraslap 1 Triangles 15 Triangle stick 4 Double castanets 3 Yamaha keyboard 4 Agogo - metal 1 Tone block 1 Castanets 25 Finger cymbals 5 Music stands 6 Hand chimes 15 Cymbals – pairs 2 Cymbals – singles 1 Xylophones 12 Large bongo drum 1 Chime bars A sharp/B flat – 3 Chime bars regular A – 4 regular E flat – 2 B – 6 C# -2 C – 8 F# - 4 D – 4 G# - 1 E – 6 F – 5 G - 5 Chime bars large metal D c & E Chime bars wooden C & G Need repairing bass Cabasa 2 Maracas 11 Calabash 2 Sandpaper blocks 1 pair Rain tubes 3 Jingle bells 20 Hand bells 1 set 7 Djembe drums 3 1 set 8 Guiros 1 Binasara 1 Clapper drums 2 Tambours 4 Stick drums 2 Tom Toms 2 Drum - skin 4 Double bongos 3 Bell tree 1 Wood blocks 3 Double bells 12 Country dancing bells x2 boxes African finger pianos 2 ICT Resource list Item Number Electronic keyboards 4 Mp3 music player/recorder 1 Charanga Musical School Website Site licence access: licence through West Sussex ‘Key 2 Music’ subscription Recorders and book lists Item Number Descant recorders 37 + 1 Hornby recorder Recorder Magic book 1 21 Music folders 32 mixed colours Recorder cleaning sticks 21 Music Express Music Scheme – 7 books + CDs Foundation stage, KS1 and KS2 Music Express CD ROM – year 5 1 Songs for every assembly + CD 1 Songs for every day + CD 1 Songs for every occasion + CD 1 Words on Screen CD Rom – Songs for 1 Every Assembly Words on Screen CD Rom – Songs for 1 Every Happy Healthy School Words on Screen CD Rom – Songs for 1 Every Occasion Words on Screen CD Rom – Songs for 1 Every Singing School Words on Screen CD Rom – Songs for 1 Every Harvest Words on Screen CD Rom – Songs for 1 Every Day Rhythm and pulse resources and DVDs 1 for Key stage 1 and 2 by Sally Wagter.
