Smith, Jr. Professor Emeritus of Botany Department of Biological Sciences Humboldt State Univerity Arcata, California 14 September 2018 The Redwood National and State Parks are located in Del Norte and Humboldt counties in coastal northwestern California. The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks. -

Divergence Downloaded from time estimation and biogeographic analyses over the posterior distribution of dated trees suggest that a widespread an- cestor was distributed across the Northern Hemisphere some 7–17 million years ago. Asian species form a sister group to a clade in which the European species are sister to the North American species. We use climatic niche modeling and divergence time estimates to explore the evolution of climate variables in the group. -

On Oct 10, 2019, FGC staff transmitted the petition to DFW for review. A notice of receipt of petition was published in the California Regulatory Notice Register on Nov 22, 2019. California Fish and Game Code Section 2073.5 requires that DFW evaluate the petition and submit to FGC a written evaluation with a recommendation, which was received at FGC’s Feb 21, 2020 meeting. The evaluation report (Exhibit 2) delineates each of the categories of information required for a petition, evaluates the sufficiency of the available scientific information for each of the required components, and incorporates additional relevant information that DFW possessed or received during the review period. Today’s agenda item follows the public release and review period of the evaluation report prior to FGC action, as required in Fish and Game Code Section 2074. -

Native Plants for Hummingbirds
NATIVE PLANTS FOR HUMMINGBIRDS Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants 10459 Tuxford Street, Sun Valley, CA 91352, (818) 768-1802, theodorepayne.org Hummingbirds are attracted to flowers in the red spectrum but are also attracted to many other colors, including white, purple and yellow. They prefer red flowers because many insects avoid red blossoms, thus there is more nectar in them. The typical hummingbird flower is a long flared tube that keeps out rival pollinators and invites the little birds to lap up the sweet nectar with their long bills and tongues. To provide food year round, plant an assortment of native plants with different blooming seasons. Avoid using pesticides, as hummingbirds subsist primarily on small insects during fall and winter, and hummers use spider webs to build their nests. Some garden plants provide nesting material, such as the fuzzy hairs on the underside of sycamore leaves. A water source is appreciated; shallow, moving water is best. Several species of hummingbirds are year-round residents in Southern California; others migrate through our region. These nectar plants will attract and support hummingbirds throughout the seasons. SPRING Aquilegia formosa (western columbine) – 2-3’ H x 1-2’ W – Showy red and yellow flowers. Sun or shade. Berberis (Mahonia) species and cultivars (barberry, Oregon grape) – Sizes vary – Barrier plants with prickly foliage and yellow flowers. Calliandra californica (red fairyduster) – 5’ H x 5’ W – Showy Baja CA native; blooms year round. Cirsium occidentale (California thistle) – 4’ H x 1’ W – Annual with magenta flowers that attract many pollinators. Cobweb-like flower filaments are used for nesting. -

Brian District Botanist, BLM Coos Bay District Office, North Bend, OR 97459 magine you can “apparate” (disappear from one place and reappear almost instantly in Ianother, like the wizards and witches in the Harry Potter series) to the middle of Hunter Creek Bog. As you slowly sank into the bog, you’d find yourself surrounded by California pitcherplant, pleated and Mendocino gentians, Labrador tea, western tofieldia, California bog asphodel, sedges, Columbia and Vollmer’s lilies, and Pacific reed grass. Outside of this watery jungle, you would see dry, bare, red rocky slopes and a scattering of Port Orford cedar and Jeffrey pine. Luckily, “muggles” (the non-magical community) don’t need to “apparate” to get to Hunter Creek Bog. We can turn off Highway 101, just south of Gold Beach in Curry County, and drive east about 10.5 miles to visit this public land botanical jewel managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). ACEC Status There are two Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) at Hunter Creek: Hunter Creek Bog ACEC and the North Fork Hunter Creek ACEC, which together total about 2,300 acres. In 1982 the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society and the Innominata Garden Club nominated Hunter Creek Bog (Section 13) and Hunter Springs Bog (Section 24) for ACEC status (Bowen and others 1982). In 1994, 570 acres in those sections and 1,730 acres of North Fork Hunter Creek were proposed as a separate ACEC. In 1995, both ACEC proposals were designated, including lands located in Sections 1, 2, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 24, Township 37 South, Range 14 West (BLM 1995). -

PART I MADRONES IN NATURE 1 1 Pacific Madrone Forests of the Puget Trough, Washington Christopher B. Chappell and David F. Giglio Abstract: As part of a larger study of forest vegetation in the Puget Trough of Washington State, forests dominated or codominated by Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii) were sampled for vegetation, environmental features and disturbance. Two madrone plant associations are described, each of which is usually codominated by Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). These madrone plant associations are found on relatively dry sites, often on southerly aspects and often adjacent to saltwater. They are located primarily around Puget Sound and in the San Juan Islands. Madrone also occurs less commonly in other plant associations and environments which are described. The primary natural disturbance in madrone forests appears to be fire. Fires were probably moderately frequent in these dry forests during the presettlement era. The effects of fire, logging and grazing are discussed. Madrone forests are relatively rare in the landscape, especially in unfragmented, unlogged conditions free of nonnative species. Our paper represents a first attempt to describe the vegetation and ecology of madrone forests in Washington. Forest vegetation of the Puget Trough has been little studied, and Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii) forests are no exception. Franklin and Dyrness (1973) only briefly mentioned the occurrence of madrone on drier, lower elevation sites within the western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) zone of western Washington and Oregon. Despite the relatively small area they occupy, forests dominated or codominated by Pacific madrone are a distinctive and noticeable component of the land- scape (Kruckeberg 1991). Fonda and Bernardi (1976) described madrone dominated vegetation on Sucia Island, San Juan County. -
