Perle Mesta was the first United States Ambassador to MADAM Luxembourg. The original “hostess with the mostest,” Mes- ta was known for hosting lavish parties in Washington D.C for almost 30 years. Born in Oklahoma, her family came into wealth when her father became involved in the oil and real-estate industries. In 1917 she married George Mesta, owner of Mesta Machinery. Mrs. Mesta became interested in politics when her husband introduced her to several high-ranking officials, including President Calvin Coolidge. Following her husband’s death, she became heavily involved in the quest for women’s rights and joined the National Women’s Party as its Congressional chairman and Public Relations specialist. While lobbying for the Equal Rights Amendment, she made a multitude of con- nections with politicians who would later attend her famous social gatherings. A Republican for most of her life, Mesta realigned herself with the Democratic party, opting to give financial support to then Senator Harry Truman. -

Rediscovering Me and Juliet and Pipe Dream , the Forgotten Musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein
ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: “WHO EXPECTS A MIRACLE TO HAPPEN EVERY DAY?”: REDISCOVERING ME AND JULIET AND PIPE DREAM , THE FORGOTTEN MUSICALS OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN Bradley Clayton Mariska, Master of Arts, 2004 Thesis directed by: Assistant Professor Jennifer DeLapp Department of Musicology Me and Juliet (1953) and Pipe Dream (1955) diverged considerably from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s influential and commercially successful 1940s musical plays. Me and Juliet was the team’s first musical comedy and had an original book by Hammerstein. Pipe Dream was based on a John Steinbeck novel and featured bums and prostitutes. This paper documents the history of Me and Juliet and Pipe Dream , using correspondence, early drafts of scripts, interviews with cast members, and secondary sources. I analyze the effectiveness of plot, music, and lyrics, while considering factors in each show’s production that may have led to their respective failures. To better understand reception, emphasis is placed upon each show’s relationship to the political and cultural landscape of 1950s America. Hugh Panaro Is One of Those Rare Artists Whose Unique Versatility Has
Hugh Panaro is one of those rare artists whose unique versatility has allowed him a distinguished career, not only in the theater, but also in recording studios and concert halls throughout the world. He is currently starring as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. He also has the distinction of having played both Raoul and the Phantom, a role he performed over 1000 times. Also on Broadway, Mr. Panaro has been seen as Gaylord Ravenal in the Harold Prince revival of Show Boat, Marius in Les Miserables and created the roles of Buddy Foster in Side Show, Julian Craster in Jule Styne’s final musical The Red Shoes and the title role of the seductive vampire in Elton John’s musical Lestat. Mr. Panaro made his West End debut as Gaylord Ravenal in Show Boat and went on to perform the title role in Martin Guerre. Some of Mr. Panaro’s Off-Broadway credits include White Lies at the Triad Theater, Noa Noa at Playwright’s Horizons, Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights at the John Housman Theatre, Children of Eden at the Actor’s Playhouse and the role of Robert in Little Fish at Second Stage Theatre. In Los Angeles, Mr. Panaro has participated in “Reprise!” concert performances of Merry We Roll Along, Gentlemen Prefer Blonds and Call Me Madam, for which he received an “Ovation” nomination. At the Kennedy Center, he portrayed Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd and participated in “The Stephen Sondheim Gala”. At Avery Fischer Hall in New York City, he performed in Jerry Herman’s Mack and Mabel.
