Several populations in northern and southern Argentina may represent independent lineages that deserve formal description. Two of these populations were studied for the present contribution and are easily distinguished from all the other species in the genus. One of these populations is from Río Negro province and belongs to the P. patagonicus group; it exhibits a unique dorsal color pattern and several individuals are melanic, a characteristic never reported before for the genus, with the exception of P. tenebrosus. A careful examination of melanic individuals revealed the same dorsal pattern as that of non-melanic ones, although it is obscured. We also report the discovery of melanic individuals of two other species that are probably closely related: P. ceii and P. sitesi. The melanism found in the P.

The latest Puyehue eruption occurred in June 2011and dispersed about 100 M tons of pyroclastic materials to the Patagonia steppe of Argentina, due to the West–East predominant winds, affecting an area of over 7.5 M ha. Herein we report the changes in the reproductive cycle of females and body condition of adult males, females, juveniles, and newborns of Phymaturus spectabilis, a lizard with a vulnerable conservation status, following volcanic ash accumulation in Argentinian Patagonian steppe. This microendemic species inhabits specific volcanic rocky outcrops, in cold and arid environments of Ingeniero Jacobacci, Río Negro, Argentina. We used the body condition index, an useful method for quantifying the energy reserves of animals, and we studied this index and the female reproductive cycle during the first (years 2011–2012) and the second (years 2012–2013) activity season post- eruption, and discussed the results in relation to the body condition and the reproductive cycle studied before eruption (years 2006–2011).

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Two new species of lizards of the saxicolous and viviparous genus Phymaturus from Patagonia are described. The new species are members of the Phymaturus patagonicus species group distributed only in volcanic plateaus and mountains of southern Argentina. Phymaturus sitesi sp. nov. differs from all other members of the patagonicus group in its unique dor- sal pattern of small white spots on a light-gray to brown-gray background and allopatric geographical distribution. Ab- sence of sexual dichromatism differentiated Phymaturus sitesi sp. nov. from P. payuniae, P. zapalensis, and P. delheyi n. sp. , and the midbody scales count differentiated from the P. delheyi sp. nov. and P. nevadoi (with some overlap). Also Phymaturus sitesi sp. nov. presents lower count in the ventral scales than in P. delheyi sp. nov. Phymaturus delheyi sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species of the patagonicus group by unique dorsal pattern of medium size white spots on a dark-brown background and allopatric distribution.
