Miss New York Leigh-Taylor Smith Visits Youth at Crossroads Juvenile Center to Encourage Volunteerism On Saturday, November 15, 2008, “Miss New York” 2008, Leigh-Taylor Smith visited youth at Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brooklyn to discuss the importance of community service and to encourage it among the residents. Nearly 70 boys and girls from Crossroads and 15 girls from Horizon Juvenile Center who were transported to Brooklyn participated in the event. The visit was organized by Assistant Commissioner for Public Affairs Scott Trent and Director of Program Services Sonia Galarza as part of the Agency’s commitment to promoting awareness among residents of their options after discharge. Ms. Smith is a 22-year old graduate of the University of Virginia. Leigh-Taylor now makes her home in Manhattan where she works as an assistant designer for Scott Sanders LLC, an interior design firm. While being an accomplished singer and actor, with an impressive theatrical resume, Ms. Leigh-Taylor Smith’s greatest passion is promoting volunteering that changes lives. Following her year of service as Miss New York 2008, she will use her scholarship winnings to pursue a Masters Degree in Interior Design at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, and anticipates becoming the owner of her own interior design firm. Ms. Leigh-Taylor Smith traveled to Africa in 2005 to teach children and adults about HIV/AIDS, and returned there in 2006 to volunteer for the Salvation Army. She helped establish a church in Belize City, Belize, has tutored children, donated 36 inches of her hair to Locks of Love, and with her team raised $58,000 for the 2008 AIDS Walk in New York. After an introduction by Assistant Commissioner Trent, Ms. Smith took the podium and spoke about her experience and the reasons she had chosen to visit residents at Crossroads. After her remarks, she was interviewed “in the round,” talking with residents and answering questions in a relaxed and friendly setting. Three separate groups of boys and two groups of girls met with Ms. Smith in the Crossroads Gymnasium. Miss New York met with the youth for an hour and a half, discussing her latest projects, including her upcoming competition in the Miss America Pageant, and how she approaches her work as an interior designer. Ms. Smith detailed the challenges and triumphs she has experienced during her time as Miss New York. She also offered insights and tips for those youth thinking of volunteering their services to their community, along with answering many interesting questions. Residents were especially curious about Ms. Smith’s travels around the globe in her role as Miss New York. She spoke about a very busy schedule that is a requirement of the title, but came back to the importance of promoting service to one’s community as a way of positively affecting the lives of others. Given the interest in Crossroads’ special visitor, Ms. Smith was gracious enough to stay after the event to converse in depth with residents and sign autographed pictures. “Miss New York Leigh-Taylor Smith is a great role model for young people. Sink or Swim: Deciding the Fate of the Miss America Swimsuit Competition Grace Slapak Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: The Miss America beauty pageant has faced widespread criticism for the swimsuit portion of its show. Feminists claim that the event promotes objectification and oversexualization of contestants in direct contrast to the Miss America Organization’s (MAO) message of progressive female empowerment. The MAO’s position as the leading source of women’s scholarships worldwide begs the question: should women have to compete in a bikini to pay for a place in a cellular biology lecture? As dissent for the pageant mounts, the new head of the MAO Board of Directors, Gretchen Carlson, and the first all-female Board of Directors must decide where to steer the faltering organization. The MAO, like many other businesses, must choose whether to modernize in-line with social movements or whole-heartedly maintain their contentious traditions. When considering the MAO’s long and controversial history, along with their recent scandals, the #MeToo Movement, and the complex world of television entertainment, the path ahead is anything but clear. Ultimately, Gretchen Carlson and the Board of Directors may have to decide between their feminist beliefs and their professional business aspirations. Underlying this case, then, is the question of whether a sufficient definition of women’s leadership is simply leadership by women or if the term and its weight necessitate leadership for women. Will the board’s final decision keep this American institution afloat? And, more importantly, what precedent will it set for women executives who face similar quandaries of identity?     VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE AND A DEMAND FOR THE IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION OF THE ENTIRE MISS AMERICA BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND PRESIDENT/CEO We, the undersigned state licensees of the Miss America Organization (MAO), represent all areas of the United States, decades of leadership, and innumerable contributions to the legacy of the Miss America Organization at every level. As dedicated members of our state and local communities who lend our reputations, financial support, and voluntary efforts to facilitate MAO’s long and powerful mission of empowering women to stand up and speak out, we find ourselves needing to use our own voices of leadership to express our profound disappointment regarding what, in our view, is the failed leadership of the entire MAO Board of Trustees led by Ms. Gretchen Carlson as its Chair and Ms. Regina Hopper as its President and CEO. The recent ouster of two duly elected Trustees, followed by the resignations of two elected Miss Americas from the nine-member Board, have underscored our grave concerns regarding the direction in which MAO is headed, its financial viability, and the expected exercise of all duties attendant to each Trustee as required by law. We were promised transparency, competence, and adherence to best practices and good governance. The current Trustees and identified staff member have both individually and collectively failed to deliver on those promises and commitments. In our opinion their leadership has demonstrated that “Miss America 2.0” is simply a new title for the same old tactics of obfuscation and fear-based governance. This dissertation explores how and why many Christians found the organization an institution worthy of partnership with the church. It examines three aspects of Christian involvement in the contest: the long history of beauty pageants, the persistent emphasis on individual physical attractiveness, and the idea of witness in southern evangelical culture. It argues that after 1965, at least two factors enabled the unlikely marriage of Christians and the Miss America Organization: the perceived threat of second-wave feminism and evangelicalism’s increasing desire to engage culture.
