The Koran and Freedom of Thought Dominique AVON and Abdellatif IDRISSI There was an age when people had the right to criticise the entourage of the prophet, when religious controversy was carried out with a great freedom of tone, and when Islamic scholars glorified atheism. Today, all the many debates relating to Islam present one single dilemma: the abandonment of faith or fundamentalism. In this article, a linguist and a historian relate how the two “givens” of Islam – the integrity of Mohammed’s entourage and the inimitability of the Koran – gradually became established over time. To them, Islam should be reconciled with the science of texts and freedom of thought. As an article title, “Plurality in Islam” could well surprise the reader. Published during the summer of 2006 and written by Jamâl al-Bannâ1, the article gave rise to no controversy at all, illustrating the difficulties of questioning the most common of commonplaces. -

The Maronite Voice A Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA Volume XI Issue No. VI June 2015 “Charity Begins at Home,” and So Does Mercy! ith the upcoming Holy Year, Pope Francis has asked us to take concrete steps to increase our mercy Wtowards ourselves and our families, as well as towards the Church and the world. Perhaps this may also be the time we seek the healing of some deep wounds in Church. I am speaking of the painful divisions that have harmed the Church. The Church was divided in the year 431, causing the separation of the Assyrian Church of the East. Then again we were divided in 451, with the separation of the Coptic, Armenian, and Syriac Churches (called Oriental Orthodox Churches). Division struck again in 1054, with the Eastern (Byzantine) Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. The final series of divisions took place in the time of the Protestant Reformation, with the growth of several Protestant, and later, Evangelical denominations. All these divisions continue today, but amazing progress has been made by the difficult yet persistent efforts of ecumenical dialogues. One such dialogue has produced extraordinary results, namely the Oriental Orthodox/Catholic Dialogue. Here below is the summary of that yearly joint statement. Pour la paix civile au Liban Une vie pour le Liban Youakim Moubarac, un homme d’exception1 Georges Corm2 Un savant engagé dans l’histoire Les hommes de ma génération qui ont eu la chance de se trouver aux côtés de Youakim Moubarac dans sa quête incessante de paix, de dialogue et de concorde entre les Libanais ont joui d’un privilège exceptionnel, à la mesure de la personnalité hors du commun qui était la sienne. Au demeurant, la vigueur intellectuelle de cet ecclésiastique, homme de très haute culture, mais pourtant si modeste et si proche de tous ses amis laïcs, l’avait amené à développer une vision du monde aux horizons élargis. Le Liban, à l’origine de ses racines profondes, était pour lui un lieu privilégié d’où il fallait organiser le dialogue, la paix, le bon sens entre un monde arabe, majoritairement musulman, et l’Europe à l’avant-garde de la modernité politique. Dans cette Europe, la France et la culture française étaient pour lui un espace, bien plus, une demeure physique et intellectuelle, qu’il affectionna toute sa vie. Saint-Sulpice, Saint-Roch, l’Abbaye de Jouarre, l’Université catholique de Louvain en Belgique, mais aussi la Sorbonne, furent ses lieux d’élection en terre européenne. Il y devint cette personnalité riche et complexe, tout à la fois un prodigieux savant maronite, continuateur d’une tradition inaugurée par l’ouverture du collège maronite de Rome en 1584 et qui donna au Liban et à l’Europe des hommes éminents, ouverts sur l’Église universelle et tous ses courants; un francophile inlassable, même lorsque les -

Lebanon: No 'Civil War' This Time Georges Corm Israel as a "Jewish state," to quote the title of the book by Theodor Herzl who founded the Zionist Movement in 1897, was in trouble from the start. It came up against a tradition of religious pluralism in the Middle East that had held for more than 1,000 years, embracing Christian members of the Eastern Church and Muslims (Sunni, Druze, Shia and Alawite). In Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt, all the religious communities, including the Jewish communities, lived in close juxtaposition (1). Any proposal to establish a state exclusively for Jews in this pluralist environment was bound to encounter strong resistance. The Christians in Palestine, Lebanon and Syria were first to sound the alarm on the Arab side. Early in the 20th century they realised the threat that such a state would represent: in it, a community swollen by an influx of people from outside the region (Ashkenazi Jews fleeing persecution in Russia and eastern Europe) would hold a monopoly on power. Eastern Christians saw that the Zionist project, supported by the European colonial powers, would inevitably be perceived as a crusade and as such would damage centuries of good relations between Christians and Muslims in the Middle East. If the project were successful, some members of the local Christian communities might seek to establish a Christian state, on the principle that they had just as much right to do so as Jews from outside the region. The Jewish settlers were inclined to regard the Christian minorities in the Middle East as potential allies, even before the state of Israel was established. -

JOINT SUBCOMMITTEE HEARING COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa TESTIMONY OF NINA SHEA, DIRECTOR HUDSON INSTITUTE’S CENTER FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM June 25, 2013 Religious Minorities in Syria: Caught in the Middle I commend the two Subcommittees for holding this critically important and timely hearing today. The question of the treatment of religious minorities concerns America’s core values as a nation, but, in recent foreign policy, it is one that the United States has too often failed to address, with tragic results. It represents a grave human rights crisis and undermines our national security interests. I am honored to have been invited to testify for the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom. In my testimony, I will focus on the situation of the various Christian groups in Syria, and the threat they face to their continued existence in their ancient homeland. This threat, which undoubtedly applies equally to Syria’s other defenseless and even smaller minorities – such as the Yizidis (80,000) and Jews (under 100) -- about whom there is scant information, is not recognized or understood in US foreign policy. We are grateful to the Subcommittees two chairs, Rep. Christopher H. Smith and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, for giving attention to this issue. Rima TÜZÜN We are running out of time. Distinguished Members of the European Parliament, honourable Chair, dear guests, on behalf of the European Syriac Union, I would like to thank the EPP for this invitation, for the possibility to make a short speech. First of all, I would like to introduce us very shortly: Syriac people: who are we? Syriacs are known as the Christians from Iraq, from Turkey, from Iran, from Syria. We are only known as the Christians from the Middle East but we are the people who first recognised Christianity, and we are the people who spread Christianity to the world. We are the people speaking the language of Jesus Christ, Aramaic. Before Jesus Christ, our people were known as the Assyrian, the Chaldean, the Aramaic, the Babylonian people. This is very short and is meant to give you an idea of who we are speaking about. I would like to speak about Christianity in the Middle East, not only about the threat we are facing today from ISIS, but really to make the connection between the threat of ISIS, which we are facing now in the Middle East, and the threat it represents for Europe and the whole world. When our people recognised Christianity, they recognised it under every form of oppression. They have been killed, but again they were able to spread Christianity in the world. The more Christianity was spread in the Middle East, the more it was spread worldwide and brought solutions, but the weaker Christianity became in the Middle East, the more the numbers of Christians declined worldwide, and conflicts have not been solved.
