Schram" North Coast 2008 69 6 THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS The history of winegrowing in the Santa Cruz Mountains goes back to the 1860’s when George Jarvis first planted significant vineyards. By the late 1880’s, there were thirty- eight wineries in the mountains. Many California winegrowing pioneers started here, including Paul Masson, Martin Ray and Charles LeFranc. The appellation was the first in the U.S. to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors, and exceeds 350,000 acres. It is defined by the elevations of 400 feet on the western, coastal side, and 800 feet on the eastern, warmer side. There are currently over 70 wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains, mostly small, and owned and operated by family, artisanal winemakers. The peak of Mount Madonna forms the southern boundary, and the waters of Half Moon Bay define the northern boundary. In between, there are probably more microclimates than in any other California appellation. This creates a diverse and terroir- driven environment for making wines of distinction and uniqueness. The coastal side of the mountains is generally temperate, with ocean fog cooling the evenings, perfect for pinot noir and chardonnay. The eastern side of the mountains is generally warmer during the growing season, producing some of the best cabernets in the United States, as well as chardonnays—different from their coastal relatives—but nonetheless rich in flavor. Many other varieties thrive in the mountains, for example, syrah, petite syrah, zinfandel, and merlot, and while the Santa Cruz Mountains has always been a well-kept secret, its wines have increasingly gotten better-known and widely recognized among wine writers and the general public. And after all, it was the 1971 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello from the Santa Cruz Mountains that won the 30th anniversary Judgment of Paris tasting in 2006.
