CHARACTERISATION OF EXPLOSIVE WEAPONS EXPLOSIVEEXPLOSIVE WEAPON EFFECTSWEAPON OVERVIEW EFFECTS FINAL REPORT ABOUT THE GICHD AND THE PROJECT The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) is an expert organisation working to reduce the impact of mines, cluster munitions and other explosive hazards, in close partnership with states, the UN and other human security actors. Based at the Maison de la paix in Geneva, the GICHD employs around 55 staff from over 15 countries with unique expertise and knowledge. Our work is made possible by core contributions, project funding and in-kind support from more than 20 governments and organisations. Motivated by its strategic goal to improve human security and equipped with subject expertise in explosive hazards, the GICHD launched a research project to characterise explosive weapons. The GICHD perceives the debate on explosive weapons in populated areas (EWIPA) as an important humanitarian issue. The aim of this research into explosive weapons characteristics and their immediate, destructive effects on humans and structures, is to help inform the ongoing discussions on EWIPA, intended to reduce harm to civilians. The intention of the research is not to discuss the moral, political or legal implications of using explosive weapon systems in populated areas, but to examine their characteristics, effects and use from a technical perspective. The research project started in January 2015 and was guided and advised by a group of 18 international experts dealing with weapons-related research and practitioners who address the implications of explosive weapons in the humanitarian, policy, advocacy and legal fields. This report and its annexes integrate the research efforts of the characterisation of explosive weapons (CEW) project in 2015-2016 and make reference to key information sources in this domain.

  • Status Update of the New 155 Mm Lightweight Howitzer
United States General Accounting Office Washington, DC 20548 April 10, 2001 The Honorable Lane Evans House of Representatives Subject: Status Update of the New 155 mm Lightweight Howitzer Dear Mr. Evans: In July 2000, we issued a report to you and several other members of Congress describing problems with the new 155 mm Lightweight Howitzer program.1 The new 155 mm Lightweight Howitzer is expected to replace the M-198 towed howitzer. The Army-Marine Corps Lightweight Howitzer Joint Program Office is directing this program’s development, with BAE SYSTEMS (BAE), a British company, as the prime contractor. This correspondence responds to your request of December 2000 that we continue to monitor and report on this program due to your continued concerns about its schedule, cost, and technical difficulties. RESULTS IN BRIEF Since our July 2000 report, all key milestones except one have continued to slip. For example, acceptance of the first developmental howitzer slipped an additional 5 months from June to November 2000, and delivery of the remaining 7 developmental howitzers was delayed an additional 5 to 10 months. The production decision has slipped from March 2002 to September 2002 and the initial fielding of the new howitzer by the Marine Corps has slipped another 8 months to July 2004 or 28 months from the date set at the original contract award. The initial fielding of the howitzer to the Army remains unchanged at March 2005. Since July 2000, total program cost estimates have increased from $1,129.9 million to $1,250.2 million, an increase of $120.3 million.2 This increase is principally the result of restructuring the developmental contract which added $20.2 million and an approximately $100 million increase for an electronic aiming system.

While there have been several publications covering this vehicle over the decades, this present book is different as it offers a fresh look and a unique approach: For the first time, a large amount of high-quality wartime photographs were available for the detailed research of production batches and individual components. This has allowed the first-ever, reliable production batch identifier to be published. In addition, the photos displayed are mostly unpublished and come from private photo albums of soldiers that drove in and worked with the Kübelwagen on a daily basis, rather than being well- known propaganda shots. SECURITYENFORCER AS WE LIVE UP TO OUR RESPONSIBILITIES. RHEINMETALL DEFENCE THE SECURITY PROMISE FOR A WORLD WITH LESS AND LESS SECURITY. Political certainties and boundaries disappear into thin air in an amazingly short period of time. It is not even possible to approximately estimate the global effects of climate change, the consequences of urbanisation and demographic development. If we take this initial situation and also consider the fact that rapid techno- logical development – in addition to the existing threat scenarios – is making cyber attacks, drone attacks and new forms of terrorism possible, it becomes clear just how great the current demands are in terms of security. In order to be able to guarantee security and protection in the world of the future, we need the expertise and energy of a group that, with a successful past in the development of defence and security technology, already has these dangers in mind. In line with changing realities, we see it as our greatest challenge and respon- sibility to develop pioneering products and systems that are a decisive step ahead of real and future threats. 2 3 FUTURE CHALLENGE – DRONE DEFENCE MAINTAIN CONTROL WHERE THERE IS A RISK OF LOSING CONTROL. • Press Release
KNDS records another successful business year Amsterdam, 14 June 2021 The defence technology group KNDS, in which Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (Germany) and Nexter (France) merged to form the leading European company for military land systems, ammunition and related services, has presented its key figures for fiscal year 2020. In 2020, the group achieved remarkable results in an unprecedented context due to the Covid crisis, thus demonstrating its robust business model, its resilience and its strong economic and financial position. With 3,3 billion euro of order intake, the consolidated order backlog grew to a record 10.6 billion euro. Major orders were the midlife upgrade for the 322 FENNEK vehicles of the Netherlands Army, 24 LEGUAN bridge layers for the German Bundeswehr, 42 JAGUAR, 271 GRIFFON, and 364 SERVAL vehicles related to the SCORPION program, as well as support and services activities for the French army, and CAESAR guns for a new export customer. The group generated 2,4 billion euro of revenue, while its workforce grew to 8,270 employees. “In 2020, we met or exceeded all our commercial targets,” said Frank Haun, CEO of KNDS, in assessing the company’s performance. “In addition, Nexter and KMW are integrating faster and more strongly to become the joint pacesetter for key innovations in the field of military land systems. Against this backdrop, however, we see new challenges. For example, the budgets of our most important customers are being significantly impacted by the consequences of the corona pandemic, partly at the expense of the defence budgets. And within defence budgets, significant increases in spending on air systems are emerging, which in turn are putting pressure on much-needed army projects.” Press contact Guillem Monsonis Dr.
