MAMA, I’M COMING HOME With the departure of long-time assistant coach Rodney Batts to Mississippi Gulf Coast CC, Mike Kinnison turned to former Statesman All-American shortstop Eric Patten to fill the vacancy. Patten, a four- year letterman and starter for the Statesmen, helped DSU claim two conference titles and the 2004 NCAA Division II National Champion- ship during his playing days.

After graduating with two degrees from DSU, Patten embarked on a coaching career that ultimately led him to Jones Junior College, where he helped JCJC to an appearance in the NJCCAA National Tournament in 2014. He has also served as a graduate assistant at DSU.

Patten will work with the infielders and serve as the hitting instructor. He still ranks in DSU’s career top 10 in runs scored (231/2nd), hits (274/3rd), games played (218/3rd), and triples (11/3rd).

Mike Kinnison Mike has completed 18 seasons as head coach of one of the most storied programs in collegiate baseball. In taking over the program in 1997, Kinnison was following in the shadow of Coach Dave “Boo” Ferriss and Bill Marchant. However, Kinnison has casted a mighty shadow himself. On March 20, 2011, Coach Kinnison tied his former coach and mentor Dave “Boo” Ferriss for the school’s career wins mark at 639. In 26 seasons, Ferriss compiled a 639-387-8 record as head coach of the Statesmen. Kinnison accomplished the feat in 15 seasons as skipper. In 2010, it was announced that Kinnison was an inductee for the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and on July 31, 2011, Kinnision joined the Hall of Fame with the class of 2011. Receiving the highest honor an athlete or coach can receive in Mississippi, Kinnison is a legend still hard at work. Since 1997, Kinnison has accomplished an unbelievable career record of 785-240-2 (.764). He av- erages 44 wins per season as head coach. His all-time career record, including high school, is an astounding 1,077-323-2 (.768). In 2004, he earned the ABCA “National Coach of the Year” award after leading the Statesmen to the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship. He has also been named the Gulf South Coach of the Year six times and appropriately named “Coach of the Decade” by the GSC in 2010. In his 18 seasons as head coach, Kinnison has guided the Statesmen to the 2004 NCAA National title, five College World Series appearances (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 & 2012), 10 NCAA South Regional appearances (1999-2005, 2007, 2008 & 2012), 11 GSC Western Division titles (1997-2005, 2007-2008), five NCAA South/South Central Regional championships and five Gulf South Conference titles. Kinnison has also coached two American Baseball Coaches Association National Players of the Year, as Dee Haynes (2000) and Jud Thigpen (2004) earned the honor. Before taking over the reigns as head coach, Kinnison served as an assistant coach for three seasons under Bill Marchant. Kinnison was an important component to the 1994 and 1996 teams, who accom- plished trips to the Gulf South Conference Championships and the College World Series. In his three years as an assistant, the Statesmen compiled an impressive 138-36 (.793) record. The Benton native was a standout shortstop for Coach Dave “Boo” Ferris from 1977-1978. Kinnison garnered ABCA Second Team All-American honors during the 1978 season. In that same year, he batted .343 with 25 doubles and 56 RBI’s in leading the Statesmen to a second place finish at the NCAA College World Series. Kinnison currently holds the single season record for doubles (25-tied) and previously held the record for most games played (62) in a season. Before returning to his alma mater, Kinnison was an accomplished high school coach in Mississippi. He coached at Lee Academy (1979-81), Jackson Prep (1982-92) and Madison Central (1993). He claimed three Mississippi Private School Association State Championships at Jackson Prep in 1982, 1990 and 1991. During his prep head-coaching career, Kinnison achieved an overall record of 292-83 (.779). Kinnison earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education in 1977 from Delta State University. He later earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education from DSU in 1978. Kinnison is married to the former Cindy Colbert of Grenada. They are the proud parents of Mary Claire and Kate, both graduates of Delta State University. The Kinnison’s reside in Cleveland.

MLB COACHES: Eli Whiteside, pictured below, was named the catching coach for the San Francisco Giants in January. Whiteside was a part of the Giants 2010 and 2012 World Series Championship teams. PROFESSIONAL NOTES w The Statesmen boast more professional players, drafted and free agents, than any other program in the Gulf South Conference. Currently, five Statesmen are on active major or minor league rosters. DSU had three players taken in the 2010 MLB Draft, including: Brandon Hardin (10th/White Sox), Aaron Newcomb (19th/Angels) and James Hudelson (28th/White Sox). w Eli Whiteside became the first player in Delta State University history to win two MLB World Series Championships with the San Francisco Giants (2010 | 2012). w Barry Lyons, a back-up catcher for New York, became the first Statesmen to win a World Series title with the New York Mets in 1986. w Joe DiFabio became the first player ever drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 20th overall pick in the 1965 MLB Draft, the first year professional baseball hosted an amatuer player draft. w Delta State Baseball made its first mark in professional baseball when Bob Brumfield (1960-63) signed to play with the Minnesota Twins in 1960.

Last season saw Alabama Huntsville claim its second GSC Tournament Title in school history, its first since 2001. The Chargers closed the season with a 41-16 (22-7 GSC) record. Entering this season, No. 21 UAH is one of four schools ranked by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Poll, joining No. 30 Delta State, No. 35 West Florida and No. 37 Lee.

Both Lee and Mississippi College are inching closer through the reclassification process as both will be full-fledged mem- bers in 2015-16 and 2016-17, respectively. LU had an impressive first season in the GSC finishing with a 37-19 record, including 15-12 in the conference. Both Shorter and Union have completed the reclassification process for NCAA Division II and will join the GSC ranks as official members this season.

A new head coach joins the GSC ranks in Union’s Lee Driggers. He steps in after coaching East Texas Baptist the last two season (35-47). He has 21 years of experience as a head coach at both the NAIA and NCAA Division III ranks [533-393-2 (.577)]. Driggers began his coaching career in 1988 at Tarleton State. From 1989-92, Driggers stepped away from the col- lege game to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates’ single-A affiliate of the New York-Penn. League. He was also drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1968 and spent his pro career playing in the Pioneer and Florida State Leagues.

Six former GSC standouts joined the professional ranks via the MLB Amateur (First Year Player) Draft in 2014. The GSC Pitcher of the Year, Jordan DeLorenzo (West Florida) went in the 12th round (375 overall); followed by UWF’s Dawson Brown (24th round - 732), DSU’s Taylor Stark and UWF’s Cliff Covington (both in the 30th round - 896, 898), VSU’s Dom DeMasi (31st round - 938) and DSU’s Carlos Leal (34th round - 1016).

The 2015 Preseason All-GSC Team featured 19-total returning All-GSC Team members from a year ago. Leading the pack was 2014 GSC Player of the Year, West Alabama’s Mitch Holgate. In all, UAH, DSU, North Alabama, UWF and Valdosta State all saw three student-athletes each make the team. UWA saw two, while both Christian Brothers and West Georgia each turned in one.

2015 GSC BASEBALL PRESEASON COACHES’ POLL Delta State was again dubbed the top choice as the Statesmen will enter 2015 as the No. 1 team (77 points). Alabama Huntsville, the 2014 GSC Tournament Champions, garnered three first-place votes and was tabbed second (72 points). West Florida rounded out the Top 3 with 66 points; followed by, Valdosta State (58 points), West Alabama, with 48 points, North Alabama (45 points), West Georgia (33 points), newcomers Shorter (23 points) and Union (18 points) and Christian Brothers, with 10 points.
