2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 13 2006-07 SEASON OUTLOOK The Men’s Basketball Team Looks To Build On Breakthrough 2005-06 Season

The 2006-07 Sharks’ basketball squad isn’t counting on sneaking up on anyone this season after a surprise 2005-06 season, in which the ’ basketball team rose from last in the pre-season standings to second in the final conference standings. With four starters and nine letter-winners returning and a new on-campus arena, NSU looks to build on their breakthrough season by competing for the Sunshine State Conference championship and furthering their reputa- tion as a solid division two program on regional and national scales.

The Back Court Coach Gary Tuell has a lot of options in the backcourt this sea- son as he has multiple talented players vying for playing time. “We can go big or small,” Tuell says. “The backcourt will be quicker and faster than last year.”

Returning is SSC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All Conference Tim Coenraad. Coenraad averaged 11 points and five rebounds per game in his freshman season. “Tim has a bright future”, says coach Tuell. “He is a good shooter with great strength and size and is a great competitor who can play many positions.”

All-Freshman guard Rhys Martin, who averaged 11.3 points and had a team high 43 steals last season, also returns. Tuell says that Martin “can play both guard positions and is a tough defender with great quickness. Rhys had an outstanding freshman year and we look for bigger and better things this season.”

A valuable addition to the backcourt will be senior transfer guard Donovan Redden, who comes to NSU from West Florida where he averaged 11 points per game in 2005-06. “Donovan is a great competitor who is enormously talented” says Tuell. “Once he learns the system he could have a special year for us.”

Also returning is junior guard Oresti Nitsios, who averaged 9.3 points per game last season. “Oresti could be a key to the team this year” says Tuell. “He is a great shooter who will provide match-up problems for other teams.”

Three walk-ons will play reserve roles in the backcourt for the Sharks this season. Junior Jason Del Calvo appeared in 15 games for NSU last season. “Jason is a 100% effort guy who has the opportunity to be a contribu- tor this season” said Tuell. Sophomore Jordan Smith appeared in 10 games last season. “Jordan has improved since last season”, says Tuell. “He makes other players better by playing with his heart”. Freshman Tomas Portuondo rounds out the backcourt for NSU this season. “He has nice athleticism and can help us in the future,” Tuell proclaims. http://nsuathletics.nova.edu 14 2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL The Front Court “Other teams may be as good, but no one will have three better frontcourt players than Aguiar, Chester and Naylor,” according to Tuell. “I wouldn’t trade them for anyone,” says the NSU coach. “They can all score, defend and rebound among the best in Division II.”

Senior transfer Diego Aguiar is a 6-7 forward who comes from Division I Campbell University where he averaged 5.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. In his sophomore year at Campbell he scored 16 points and pulled 8 rebounds at No. 17 NC State on 7-9 shooting. (11/26/04) “Diego is a multi-talented player who we expect immediate contributions from,” says Tuell. “He is a great teammate and skilled athlete.”

Junior Kevin Chester returns after averaging 6.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 2005-06. “Kevin improved tremendously in the off-season” says Tuell. “He has worked hard to extend his range while also improving on finishing around the basket. He is an improving player and we expect a big year from him.”

After being named on the Sunshine State Conference All-Fresh- man team last season, David Naylor will look to add to the 12.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game he averaged a year ago. “David is as good as they come,” says Tuell. “He runs the floor, competes non-stop and plays harder than anyone. He is a big-time player.”

Sophomore Josh Wood will look to rebound from a broken thumb on his right hand, which forced him to miss a majority of his freshman campaign. “Josh is a good athlete who has ma- tured and gotten much stronger in the off-season,” Tuell states. “Josh could surprise some people. We love his versatility.”

Sophomore forward Paul Sinclair will provide a lift off the bench this season for the Sharks. Last season Sinclair saw action in 17 games. “Paul continues to improve and develop,” says Tuell. “He has a better understanding of the game and has a chance to help us this season.”

Freshman forward Tony Trajceski rounds out the roster for the Sharks. He is a 6-8, 205 pound shot

The Schedule There are no cupcakes on coach Gary Tuell’s schedule. “It’s about as tough as you can play in Division II,” says Tuell. “By playing the top teams in the region, the non-conference games will prepare us for our conference schedule. We would rather lose to a good team than get a meaning- less win against a poor opponent. Win or lose, playing good teams make you better.”

2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 27 2005-06 SEASON REVIEW The Sharks had a breakthrough 2005-06 season under Head Coach Gary Tuell. The Sharks rose from last in the pre-season Sunshine State Conference standings to second place in the final standings. The 17-11 overall record accounted for only the fourth winning season in the program’s 23 year history and was a 10 game turnaround from the previous season. The 11 wins in conference play established a new program record.

Tuell started fresh, with four newcomers making major contributions for the Sharks. Sun- shine State Conference Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference Member Tim Coenraad (Brisbane, Australia) led the way by starting 26 games, posting 11 points and five rebounds per game. Coenraad was joined on the All-Freshman team by team- mates Rhys Martin (Brisbane, Australia) and David Naylor (Melbourne, Australia). Martin started 23 games, scoring 11.3 points and dishing out 3.2 assists per game. Naylor led the team with 12.1 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game. Another freshman, Josh Wood (Brighton, Australia), contributed 5.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in a season limited by injuries.

The Sharks won their first game over Ouachita Baptist and carried the momentum over to start the season 6-1. The conference portion of the schedule began in the new-year with NSU falling to defending conference Lynn University in a closely contested game. The Sharks rebounded to win five straight conference games and establish themselves as a contender for the conference championship. The team was in position for a possible conference championship before dropping three of their final five conference games to settle for a second place finish. NSU was upset by Barry University in the conference tournament, ending all hopes of post-season play.

NSU said goodbye to five seniors at the conclusion of the 2005-06 season, as Kenny Faulk, Calvin Jenkins, Luis Gurrieres, Traavis Chandler and Adrian Chandler closed out their NSU careers. Faulk averaged 11.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in a final season shortened by an injury that forced him to miss the final 19 games of the sea- son. Jenkins finished his four year playing career by averaging 8.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 28 games of action. Gurrieres left the Sharks as the season’s assist leader with 125 while averaging 8.2 points per game. Traavis Chandler saw action in 24 games while Adrian Chandler appeared in 15 games as seniors in 05-06. http://nsuathletics.nova.edu 28 2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 2005-06 RESULTS RECORD: OVERALL HOME AWAY NEUTRAL ALL GAMES 11-5 8-0 3-5 0-0 CONFERENCE 11-5 8-0 3-5 0-0 NON-CONFERENCE 0-0 0-0 0-0 0-0

2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 53 NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the organization through which the nation’s colleges and universities speak and act on athletic matters at the national level. It is a voluntary association of approximately 1,200 institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics.

Through the NCAA, member colleges consider any athletics problem that crosses regional or confer- ence lines and has become national in character. The association strives to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational program and the athlete as an integral part of the student body. The NCAA also stands for good conduct in intercollegiate athletics and serves as the colleges’ national athletics accrediting agency.

The NCAA has grown dramatically in the past 50 years, with more than 600 new members since 1950.

NCAA DIVISION II Division II institutions have to sponsor at least four sports for men and four for women, with two team sports for each gender and each playing season represented by each gender. There are contest and participant minimums for each sport, as well as scheduling criteria—football and men’s and women’s basketball teams must play at least 50 percent of their games against Division II or I-A or I-AA oppo- nents.

For sports other than football and basketball, there are no scheduling requirements. There are no atten- dance requirements or arena game requirements for basketball. There are maximum financial aid awards for each sport that a Division II school must not exceed. Division II teams usually feature a number of local or in-state student-athletes. Many Division II student-athletes pay for school through a combination of scholarship money, grants, student loans and employment earnings. Division II athletics programs are financed in the institution’s budget like academic departments on campus. Traditional rivalries with regional institutions dominate schedules of many Division II athletics programs.

NCAA COMPLIANCE TIP Did you know? A student-athlete shall not receive any extra benefit? This refers to any special arrangement by an institutional employee or representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide the student-athlete or his or her relative or friends with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation. http://nsuathletics.nova.edu 54 2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL http://nsuathletics.nova.edu

2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 55 NSU DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT Nova Southeastern University recognizes, values and supports intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational mission of the university. Central to the program’s mandate and in accord with the stated goals of the university, the NSU Department of Athletics commits itself to fostering leadership, lifelong learning and service to the community among its student-athletes.

The department is dedicated to sponsoring a competitive program of intercollegiate athletics for men and women. Valuing deeply the physical, social and emotional welfare of those who participate, the department and the university express this commitment through membership in the NCAA and the Sunshine State Conference, both of which exemplify the principles of amateur athletics. These in- clude diversity, sportsmanship, fair play and equitable opportunity for all. Athletic department staff members will manifest these values in clearly discernible conduct.

The intercollegiate athletics program at Nova Southeastern University is committed to the recruit- ment, preparation and welfare of highly qualified and gifted men and women.

Michael Mominey was promoted to Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Nova Southeastern University on July 1, 2003, after serving in the capacity of interim director since January 2, 2002. He has led the NSU Department of Athletics into a historic and defining era, as NSU began their first year of competition in NCAA Division II in 2002 and in the Sunshine State Conference in 2004. In addition to leading the athletic program in their transition into the NCAA, Mominey has added five intercollegiate programs during his tenure (women’s rowing, women’s tennis, men’s cross country and men’s and women’s outdoor track) as the student-athlete population has in- creased from 160 in 2002 to over 240 projected this academic year. The departmental grade point average for all student-athletes since January of 2002 has consistently been above 3.00 for eight consecutive semesters, with the 2006 winter semester GPA reaching an all-time high of 3.20.

Mominey has been instrumental in the design, development, planning and programming phases for the University Center, which opened its doors in August 2006. The over 300,000 square-foot facility serves as a home for the intercollegiate athletic program, student recreation and wellness programs and performing arts program. The venue serves as the home to the men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. Also included in the building are a sports medicine and rehab center, a weight room/fitness room, team specific locker rooms, a student-athlete lounge, student union, cafeteria and a performing arts theater with rehearsal rooms.

“We have been very fortunate to have had the success with our program at such early stages of our membership in the NCAA and the Sunshine State Conference. We have great support from our administration, which has allowed us to progress so quickly, always maintaining the ideals of developing the student-athlete” said Mominey. “I look forward to continu- ing to challenge our student-athletes, coaches and staff to be the best they can be, in hopes of building the traditions that serve as the founda- tion of a well respected and nationally recognized athletic program. This year will continue to be an exciting and history-making era for NSU and our athletic program.”

Mominey is also a member of the Committee (elected No- vember 2004), and serves on various committees throughout the commu- nity and on campus, as well as on the Sunshine State Conference mar- keting and officials committees. Mominey is also the Division II represen- tative on the NIKE Baseball Advisory Board. In 2006, the NSU baseball team posted a program-best 33-19 NCAA mark, including a third-place finish in the Sunshine State Conference with a 14-10 record in league play.

Since joining the NCAA five years ago, the Sharks have averaged over 30 wins per season and have consistently been ranked in the top 25 nationally and as one of the best teams in the South Region.

Mominey graduated from St. Thomas University in 1994 with a master’s degree in Sports Administration and from Bowling Green University (Ohio) in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in Education/Sport Management.

2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 61 NSU DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS ATHLETICS HISTORY 1980 To boost the limited undergraduate enrollment at its Davie Campus, the NSU president, Abe Fischler, and the Board of Trustees looked to try something new: build a sports program. Nova University had a graduate school enrollment of about 7,000 students, with nontraditional, field-based programs scattered in 22 states, offering limited graduate and undergraduate degree programs on campus.

1981 Charles “Sonny” Hansley is named director of athletics of the first-ever athletic department at Nova University.

Fall 1982 Nova University finds a nickname. Mike Turpek, formerly the director of athletics at the University School, comes up with “Knights” and wins an ocean cruise. The contest to come up with the school’s nickname was open to the general public. Eight people in the area submitted the name “Knights,” but Turpek was chosen the winner after his name was pulled out of a hat.

1982–83 The first year of competition in the athletic department begins with men’s basketball. Under head coach Sonny Hansley, basketball begins as an independent program, not affiliated with any conference.

Fall 1984 Nova University becomes a member of the National Little College Athletic Association (NLCAA).

1984–85 Nova University adds men’s soccer, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country.

Fall 1985 Nova University joins the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Undergraduate enrollment at this time is 222.

May 7, 1988 Nova University’s baseball team advances to the championship of the NAIA District 25 State Tournament, after defeating Flagler College 17–15 in the semifinals.

Fall 1988 Nova University’s volleyball team captures its third consecutive District 25 Volleyball Championship and finishes the year with an18– 6 record. Senior Margie Avila was named District 25 MVP. Also, Nova University hosts the NAIA 30th Annual National Soccer Championships. Men’s soccer head coach Hal Henderson is inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame for his meritorious service to the association.

1989 Mark Cavanaugh, Ph.D., is appointed as the faculty athletic representative for Nova Athletics.

1990–91 Nova University joins with seven other NAIA schools (Flagler College, Webber College, St. Thomas University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Palm Beach Atlantic College, Warner Southern College and Florida Memorial College) to form the FIAC (Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Nova has an undergraduate population of more than 3,200 students. Men’s soccer wins its first-ever FIAC championship, earning a berth in the District 25 Tournament for the sixth straight year.

1992 FIAC is changed to the Florida Sun Conference (FSC). Nova University is now a member of District 7 and has a new president, Stephen Feldman, Ph.D.

2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 73 NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT RAY FERRERO, JR., J.D. PRESIDENT, NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

The 2005–06 school year marked several milestones for Nova Southeastern University. The Department of Athletics had another extremely successful year on the fields, courts and water, while competing in its fourth year as a member of the NCAA. The NSU women’s rowing team took part in the NCAA Division II Rowing Championships for the third time in program history, finishing third in the nation overall.

In fall 2006, the new 366,000-square-foot University Center opened its doors. This multiuse facility is at the center of NSU’s 300-acre main campus and will serve as the home to our sports teams. The 5,500-seat convocation center/sports arena at the University Center is the second largest of its kind in Broward County and will allow us to host special events, concerts and lectures, as well as local, national and international conferences. It will redefine the university’s relationship with its students, administration, faculty and staff members and the entire surround- ing community.

The facility also serves as the new home to the university’s student development and activities offices, career services, the student information center, card office, The Flight Deck Lounge, radio station and volunteer center. Its design incorporates a state-of-the-art health and fit- ness club, racquetball and squash courts, a gymna- sium and a rock-climbing wall.

Our talented student-athletes balance NSU’s rigor- ous academic demands with the vigorous environ- ment of athletic training and competition. They em- body the values of leadership, lifelong learning and service to the community. The University Center will provide the student-athletes with the training facili- ties and space to continue to enhance these values.

Today, as the seventh largest independent, not-for-profit university in the United States, we are fulfilling that mission.

The student-athletes of Nova Southeastern University have shown great success in the classroom, as well. The women’s golf team posted the highest GPA of all NSU teams for the 2005–06 school year with a 3.6, while women’s cross country, women’s basketball and men’s golf finished with a combined 3.3 for the year. More then 80 student-athletes were named to the honor court, while 12 student-athletes were nominated for Academic All-American consideration. In addition, the overall grade point average for NSU student-athletes has been 3.0 or higher for the past six years.

Everyone associated with this university can take pride in the excellence we have achieved thus far, and look forward to an exciting future full of milestones. We will continue to seek and implement ways to better ourselves every day. And we will aim to surpass even our own high standards of excellence in academics, research, technology, athletics and community service.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Nova Southeastern University.

2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 75 NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY OVERVIEW 1960–1970 When the first class of 17 graduate students enrolled in Nova University of Advanced Technology on Monday, September 25, 1967, the campus in Davie, Florida, still looked more like the abandoned naval airfield it had once been than like the campus of what aspired to be “the MIT of the South.” Only the Rosenthal Building had been completed. The shell of the Parker Building was under construction. The rest of the campus was barren, acre after acre of weeds and sand relieved here and there by some of the original tarmac.

With only one permanent building ready for occupancy on the 300-acre campus, after the formalities of registration and orien- tation, faculty members and students went to Rolling Hills Country Club for lunch. They then met in groups, based upon their areas In 1969, Nova University’s 300-acre of specialization. Science education students went back to campus in Davie, Florida, looked more Rosenthal; physics and chemistry students went to the like the abandoned naval airfield it had once been. university’s temporary laboratories in the 400 block of East Las Olas Boulevard; and oceanography students went to the houseboat laboratories at Southeast 15th Street.

Chartered by the state of Florida on December 4, 1964, Nova University boasted assets, contribu- tions, and pledges of $10 million by opening day in 1967. A total of $125,000 had been raised and paid to the federal government as an installment on what became the university’s 300-acre campus. James Farquhar, the university’s first chairman of the board, donated 100 acres adjacent to the campus—a gift valued in excess of $500,000. Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Mather and the Bailey Foundation donated a 100-acre parcel of land in Hollywood valued at $400,000. Ten acres at Port Everglades for the oceanographic laboratory were deeded to the university by the Broward County Commission.

The university represented a great hope for higher education in South Florida: an institution that would keep the best and the brightest at home and attract the most promising faculty members and students from around the country to a great seat of learning in a rapidly developing region of the United States. By stressing the importance of science and technology, it would provide the kind of leadership that was needed to help bring the United States into a competitive position in the conquest of space, the new frontier of the 1960s. Nova University would be in a position to provide fresh approaches to the process of teaching, learning and doing research. Nova could also serve as a catalyst in developing and implementing educational models that could be applied first to its neigh- boring schools, then nationwide.

University officials knew that from the opening day, all eyes would be focused on the faculty, the students and the campus. More time, energy and money had probably been invested in the first 17 students than had been spent on any other students in the United States. They had been selected from 250 applicants from all over the country. They were all doctoral students and had been given free tuition, as well as stipends of up to $5,000 for living expenses. On top of that, it took 68 staff members, 17 faculty members and an annual budget of $1.7 million to run the university that year. http://nsuathletics.nova.edu 76 2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 1970–1985 In 1970, Nova University was given candidate status and was later accredited (1971) by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Students continued to enroll and faculty members taught and engaged in research.

The economic model upon which the university was established committed it to an ongoing need for outside funding, research grants and private donations. On June 23, 1970, the board of trustees voted to enter into a federation with the New York Institute of Technology. Alexander Schure, presi- dent of NYIT, became chancellor of Nova University. Abraham S. Fischler became president. The university charter was amended and “of Advanced Technology” was dropped from its corporate name.

During the 15 years of the federation, the whole concept of Nova’s student body, programs and campus changed. In addition to the students on the Davie campus, the university found student markets where it could, looking for ways to bring the campus to the student.

The university developed new programs and expanded beyond the limits of its campus and South Florida. Across the country, hundreds of adult, working professionals in school systems, government agencies and businesses were now able to earn advanced degrees without quitting their jobs and becoming full-time students. Few colleges and universities offered evening and weekend programs that fit their schedules. Nova had clearly found a market niche.

On campus, undergraduate evening programs began for adults, while the law school was opened in 1974. A host of master’s degree programs in business, psychology and education continued to be developed.

In 1976, the university received a $16 million gift from the estate of Leo Goodwin Sr., and began extensive campus and program expansion. Shortly after this, NSU dissolved its relationship with NYIT and began to create a board of trustees filled by South Florida community leaders, putting the stewardship of Nova back in the hands of its own local board.

1985 to Present The Nova University that emerged in 1985 was committed to incorporating new educational technolo- gies, made possible by computers and telecommunications, into the teaching and learning process and into its delivery of education. A network of students online at their computers redefined what a classroom is. Communicating across time zones, linked to a professor who can be on campus or anywhere, students across the United States and even at international locations turn one-dimen- sional computer screens into fields for academic discussion. http://nsuathletics.nova.edu In 1989, celebrating its 25th year, Nova University was enrolling more than 8,000 students and had nearly 25,000 graduates, with revenues of nearly $70 million. Over the next five years, three new buildings were constructed and a campus-wide beautification campaign added landscaping that greatly changed the look of the campus.

In 1994, Nova University merged with Southeastern University of the Health Sciences to form Nova Southeastern University (NSU), adding the Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Optometry and Allied Health to the university. The university continued its expansion of building projects and

2006-07 NSU MEN’S BASKETBALL 77 added new academic, clinical and community service programs.

By 1999, at the 35th anniversary, the university was enjoying an era of sustained growth, facilitated by a healthy infusion of endowment funds and a nearly 1,000-student increase in enrollment between fall 1998 and fall 1999. NSU’s enrollment had increased approximately 42 percent; full-time members of the faculty, staff and administration expanded to almost WILLIAM AND NORMA HORVITZ 2,600; and minority representation among faculty and ADMINISTRATION BUILDING staff members and students continued to expand.

Since 2000, NSU has undergone dramatic growth in facility and building construction. The William and Norma Horvitz Administration Building is a 62,000-square-foot structure that houses the office of the president and numerous other administration departments for the university. The Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Cen- ter was completed in 2001 and is the largest public library in the state of Florida. The Carl DeSantis Building houses the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship and opened its doors in 2004. This $33-million building is a 261,000-

square-foot, five-story facility, which is also home to ALVIN SHERMAN LIBRARY, RESEARCH, AND the Graduate School of Computer and Information INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CENTER Sciences.

NSU is the largest independent institution of higher education in the Southeast and the seventh largest independent univer- sity nationally, with a fall 2004 enrollment of more than 25,000. It is the largest of the 67 independent institutions in Florida, with an operating budget of approximately $355 million. To date, the institution has produced more than 79,000 alumni. Courses of study lead to associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral degrees. The university’s programs are administered through academic centers that offer courses at the Fort Lauder- dale campus, as well as at locations throughout Florida; across the nation; and at selected international sites in the Bahamas, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Greece, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom and Venezuela.
