The George Washington Gavel

A Naꢀonal Treasure
Coming to Ocala March 24-25, 2017

A brief history of the gavel

At 10:00 a.m. on September 18, 1793 the President of the United States, George Washington, and his entourage crossed the Potomac River to arrive in the city of Washington. There they were joined by an escort consisting of the Alexandria Volunteer Artillery and members of Masonic Lodges from Virginia and Maryland, and proceeded to the construction grounds approximately 1.5 miles away. At the site of the Capitol, Washington was received by the Grand Master of Masons of Maryland Joseph Clark. A silver plaque fashioned by Georgetown silversmith Caleb Bentley was handed to Washington who stepped into the foundation trench and placed the plaque, whereupon the cornerstone was lowered. The plaque was inscribed with a brief tribute to the "military valor and prudence" of

Washington, and dedicated the building in the "first year, of the second term, of the presidency of George W a shing-

ton ... and in the year of Masonry 5793." Washington, accompanied by three Worshipful Masters carrying corn, wine, and oil, then struck the stone three times with the gavel, as prescribed by Masonic custom. Washington exited the trench to cheers by the assembled Masons and a 15-gun salute (one gun for each U.S. States) from the Alexandria Volunteer Artillery. Clark then delivered a short invocation, after which a 500 pound ox was slaughtered and roasted.

The George Washington Gavel will be on display March 24th and 25th 2017. It is in the care of Potomac Lodge No. 5 A.F.&A.M. in Washington, DC. The Gavel travels several times a year throughout the Country. The Masonic Lodges of the 15th Masonic District of Florida are responsible for bringing this artifact to Marion County for public viewing. It is escorted by three Freemasons from Washington DC and is not out of their custody and control. There is a free event, and one ticketed event both open to the public.

R.W. Douglas L. Jordan, K.Y.C.H., K.C.C.H., O.P.C. Past District Deputy Grand Master Past Grand High Priest Grand Governor for Virginia, YRSC of NA I . Where did Masonry start? Without a doubt, Masonry has existed from the time when "the memory of man runneth not to the contrary" - that is from "time immemorial." Some Masonic writers in the late 190' Century claimed Noah as our founder. Those of us who have had the pleasure of witnessing Springfield Lodge's presentation on Cleopatra's Needle are aware of the very Masonic symbols that were found under the base of an Egyptian obelisk that was erected about 1500 B.C. John Robinson in Born in Blood provides much evidence that we owe our lodges to the Knights Templar who needed a cover following their suppression by the Catholic Church in 1307. The most generally accepted view, points to the guilds of freemasons. Operative masons have always been involved in the building of temples and other monuments from antiquity to the present day. Written evidence indicates that sometime before 926 AD masons had formed guilds or lodges but appear to have had some problems in their government. The Regius Poem or Halliwell Manuscript, which dates from 1390, tells how Athelstan, King of All England, called an Assembly at York in 926 to consider the government of the Master Masons and Craftsmen. At this assembly, fifteen Articles were adopted for the government of the Master Mason. These Articles include that: The Master must be steadfast, trusty and true.

The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Florida LODGE OFFICER TRAINING COURSE STUDY GUIDE Revised 2011 Series I Module I Basic Fundamentals Lessons 1 through 7 Organization Masonic Education Committee Revised 05/2012 1 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the ranks of those Master Masons who are concerned about their Lodge's need for good Officers and are willing to make a commitment to improve themselves in Masonry. Your involvement in this program indicates you are one of those Florida Masons. Our Lodges and their communities throughout Florida are undergoing constant change and upheaval as a result of the rapid growth of our population. Daily, as individuals and Masons, we are faced with decisions about legal matters, taxation, insurance, planning, finances and other areas which in many instances defy understanding. Recognizing that those who serve our Lodge, as Officers, must have special knowledge to prepare them to fill those offices, this training material has been prepared for your use and benefit. The course has a number of lessons which have their own text. Many of these also contain lists of reference materials and other items designed to expand your knowledge of our Fraternity. This program is designed to allow expansion as needed. It is hoped that your interest will be keen and there will be sufficient demand to warrant frequent additions to the program. Study well the prepared text materials. Make wide use of the various reference materials. Consider the questions carefully and make sure your answer is the best one. When you have completed the tests in Module I, submit the completed Module to your Zone Chairman of Masonic Education.

btutt of T,tnntßßee HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.79 By Representatives Beck, Gilmore, Glemmons A RESOLUTION to congratulate Observance Lodge #686 on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this legislative body should recognize those organizations that have reached a milestone in their illustrious history; and WHEREAS, Observance Lodge #686, officially chartered February 28, 1917, is one such noteworthy organization that has a long-standing record of meritorious public service; and WHEREAS, in 1915, a group of distinguished gentlemen met with the intent of opening a new Masonic lodge in Nashville, which they would call Observance Lodge, a reference to its objective to promote traditional Masonic values; and WHEREAS, the forty-three founding members were a mix of both established and newly minted Masons, and they had their first official meeting on January 1, 1916. The Grand Master of the State of Tennessee formally accepted their petition on February 10, 1916, and Observance Lodge began its official business; and WHEREAS, one year later, the Grand Master officially granted charter to this new Masonic establishment on February 28, 1917, and it was officially designated as Observance Lodge #686; and WHEREAS, in its early years, Observance Lodge #686 had no home to call its own and shared space with Cumberland Lodge #283. As membership continued to grow, an arrangement was made with the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Nashville in 1926, and Observance Lodge #686 moved into the Scottish Rite Valley
