"Jimmy" Lewis as the recipient of the fourth annual Tewaaraton Legends Award. "Jimmy Lewis is a natural selection for the fourth Tewaaraton Legends Award," said Jeff Harvey, Chairman of The Tewaaraton Foundation. “He was an outstanding player during a championship era at Navy and upon graduation he went on to serve his country.” Lewis began his illustrious career at Uniondale (N.Y.) High School on Long Island where he was a standout attackman from 1960-62. An All-Nassau County pick for three years, he won the Rutgers Cup and the Outstanding Player Award for Long Island lacrosse in his senior year. In 1966, The Baltimore Sun called Lewis the "greatest living lacrosseman.” Lewis concluded his college career as Navy’s leading scorer and now ranks sixth on Navy's career scoring list with 169 points (78g, 91a). He is one of only four players in program history to score 75 or more goals and dish out 75 or more assists. Lewis led the Midshipmen in scoring and earned first-team All-America honors in each of his three years at Navy (at the time freshman were not permitted to play varsity sports.) He also won the Jack Turnbull Award as the top collegiate attackman in 1964, 1965 and 1966, one of only three players ever to win the award three times. During this stretch, Navy won 22 games in a row (against zero losses) and three straight National Championships at a time when the top team was voted on by the USILA.

The lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the 2016 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour. Among the 2016 watch lists returnees are six former finalists. Four of the five 2015 women’s finalists return to the watch list, including 2014 and 2015 winner Taylor Cummings (Maryland), Sarah Mannelly (Boston College), Barbara Sullivan (Notre Dame), Kayla Treanor (Syracuse).     2012 Media Guide About Major League Lacrosse BACKGROUND: During the summer of 1998, Jake “Body By Jake” Steinfeld was inspired to start a professional outdoor lacrosse league after reading a magazine article about the growth of the sport of lacrosse. Steinfeld sought out a contributor to the article, Owner and President of Warrior Lacrosse Dave Morrow, a leading lacrosse equipment manufacturer, to discuss formation of such a league. In February 1999 Steinfeld and Morrow joined forces with Steinfeld’s friend and business associate Tim Robertson, Chairman of Bay Shore Enterprises and former CEO of the Family Channel, to form Major League Lacrosse, LLC, a Virginia limited liability company. In 2003, New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. came on board as a Founding Member of Major League Lacrosse, as well as an Anchor Level League Sponsor. Major League Lacrosse began play in 2001 to capitalize on the growing demand for world-class field lacrosse driven by dramatic growth in the U.S. lacrosse market. The MLL was praised and heralded for its on-field play, regarded as the best ever seen. With a year-on-year attendance increase, Major League Lacrosse has continued to lead the sport of lacrosse into the mainstream of competitive team sports. OUR TEAMS: MLL is comprised of eight teams across the US and Canada. The Boston Cannons, Long Island Lizards, and Chesapeake Bayhawks (formerly Baltimore and Washington) have been members of the League since its inception in 2001. The Denver Outlaws began play in 2006 as part of the League’s western expansion. The Hamilton Nationals (formerly Toronto) joined MLL in 2009 as the League’s first international team.

April 22 – The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced the men’s and women’s nominees for the 2021 Tewaaraton Award. The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier college coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation. Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be selected from these groups, to be announced in three weeks at the conclusion of the regular season. Details on the 2021 Tewaaraton Award Winners announcement will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. The men’s award nominees include players from 15 different schools (led by three each from Denver, Duke, and Virginia) and include 2019 Tewaaraton finalists Maryland’s Jared Bernhardt and Duke’s Michael Sowers.
