2014 - the Chinese New Year of the Horse in the Clouds
2014 - THE CHINESE NEW YEAR OF THE HORSE IN THE CLOUDS It takes a remarkable person to change the course of world events. To be first, to be daring, to have a superlative vision, and to have the energy needed to push changes through to their fulfillment—these are the marks of the noble and valiant Wood Horse, or ‘Horse in the Clouds’. The Horse is one of the most respected of the Chinese animal signs, notable for their persistence, strength, indomitable spirit and their ability to inspire others, rallying them to their cause. Wood Horses are especially notable for their flair and bold expression in all types of media, especially in the visual arts. While other types of Horses are noted for their political and military abilities and persuasions, the Wood Horse changes the trends of the times through the media. They write large the stories that shape society’s destiny. And of all the five types of Horses, the Wood Horse is in many ways the most beloved, because they have a way of touching the hearts of people that stirs one to action, inspires reflection and creates an impression that does not fade as does the passing fad or latest trend. The Wood Horse carves the paths that set the benchmarks toward which others aspire. Wood Horses are a presence on stage and screen. In art they are innovators, with bold colors but yet extreme care with detail. In every media they excel at movement and portray it to perfection. In society they are pioneers and explorers, pushing the boundaries of our perceptions and borders. -

SASA Newsletter Spring 2014
Issue No. 73 March 2014 Happy Year of the Horse If you google “Year of the Horse”, here’s some of what comes up: Born in this year, you are most likely cheerful, skillful with money, perceptive, witty, talented and good with your hands. In your company are such as Rembrandt, Harrison Ford, Aretha Franklin, Chopin, Sandra Day O’Connor and Teddy Roose- velt. In the Chinese Fortune Calendar it suggests that this is a wooden horse year so it should be a green horse – an auspi- cious symbol of high rank and noble lead- ership. Surely we all fit in here some- where, horse folks or not. From the Editor Mimi Gardner ‘52 “In Memoriam” is so full of folks this time! What struck me most was how hardy, interesting, and generally long-lived we China-connected people seem to be. In addition to all those memo- rials, we are weaving in some poetic reflections, a very perceptive and funny story, some good books by alums, Paul VanderMeer’s next section of his micro-enterprise development study in Taiwan, and various other things of interest to me and hopefully also to you. Please know your contributions – your writings, your adventures, your comments - are very welcome at any time as I gather material for this newsletter. We are posting the dues update list because some of you who receive SASA News on-line have told me that you have no idea when you last paid dues. We hope this is helpful and is reasona- bly accurate. Along the drive, Young recounted insightful and introspective stories from his youth to filmmaker Jonathan Demme. Demme, a long-time fan and collaborator, captured these tales of Young’s childhood and masterfully weaved them together with his mesmerizing music including songs from the 2010 album Le Noise and powerful renditions of classics including “Ohio”, Hey Hey, My My”, “I Believe in You” and previously unreleased songs “Leia” and “You Never Call.” Through the tunes and the tales, Demme portrays a personal, retrospective look into the heart and soul of the artist. In NEIL YOUNG JOURNEYS, Young’s intense performances are presented in full, along with passages from the funny and sometimes wistful ride into town. Demme and Young previously collaborated on two other documentaries, Neil Young: Heart of Gold, which chronicled Young performing in Nashville, the year after he survived a brain aneurysm and Neil Young Trunk Show, which memorialized a Pennsylvania concert during Young’s “Chrome Dreams II” tour. -

It is automatically generated from the sources of the IWGS course notes and should be up-to-date with the course progress. The glossary contains definitions for all technical terms used in the course, both theones defined in the course, as well as the ones presupposed. The latter should be relatively few, since IWGS is intended as a beginner’s course. 1 1 Glossary for IWGS Given a description logic D, a D-ontology consists of D-ontology–a terminology (or TBox): concepts and roles and a set of concept axioms that describe them, and – assertions (or ABox): a set of individuals and statements about concept membership and role relationships for them. To make the role of arguments extremely clear, we write functions in λ-notation.
