Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT – The coast of the Western Australian Kimberley boasts an archipelago that comprises several hundred large islands and thousands much smaller. While the non–marine gastropod fauna of the Kimberley mainland has been surveyed to some extent, the fauna of these islands had never been comprehensively surveyed and only anecdotal and unsystematic data on species occurrences have been available. During the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation’s Kimberley Island Survey, 2008–2010, 22 of the largest islands were surveyed. Altogether, 17 species of terrestrial non–camaenid snails were found on these islands. This corresponds to about 75% of all terrestrial, non–camaenid gastropods known from the entire Kimberley region. In addition, four species of pulmonate freshwater snails were found to occur on one or more of four of these islands. Individual islands harbour up to 15, with an average of eight, species each. Species diversity was found to be higher in the wetter parts of the region. -

The Hawaiian Archipelago has a small but highly endemic and threatened group of freshwater snails, with eight species in three families (Neritidae, Lymnaeidae, and Cochliopidae). Anthropogenically mediated habitat modifications (i.e., changes in land and water use) and invasive species (e.g., Euglandina spp., non-native sciomyzids) are among the biggest threats to freshwater snails in Hawaii. Currently, only three species are protected either federally (U.S. Endangered Species Act; Erinna newcombi) or by Hawaii State legislation (Neritona granosa, and Neripteron vespertinum). Here, we review the taxonomic and conservation status of Hawaii’s freshwater snails and describe historical and contemporary impacts to their habitats. We conclude by recommending some basic actions that are needed immediately to conserve these species. Observations on the Native Land Mollusca of Taranaki
TANE 20 1974 OBSERVATIONS ON THE NATIVE LAND MOLLUSCA OF TARANAKI By P.G. Parkinson* SUMMARY The author's recent collections of land snails from parts of Egmont National Park reveal a total of 40 species of which 22 are new records for Taranaki and three are putative new species (not herein described). When earlier publications of the mollusca of Taranaki are taken into consideration the local fauna is found to consist of 65 recorded species. The commonest species found in the author's montane collections appear to be Charopa pseudoleioda, Ch. reeftonensis, Laoma regularis and Paralaoma sericata "brown", which appear in almost two-thirds of all the samples. Other common species are Ch. wairarapa (a new record), Laoma mariae, Obanella rimutaka and O. spectabilis (both new records) and a putative new species Paralaoma "roseate". The only common native slug is Athoracophorus bitentaculatus rufovenosus. The discovery of the interesting "Egmont Paryphanta" is described and the known collections traced. PREVIOUS LAND SNAIL COLLECTIONS FROM TARANAKI Land Mollusca seem to have been first collected in Taranaki by Mr R. Murdoch of Wanganui who published some of his findings9 and by Preston (published by Sykes14). Most of Murdoch's collection was destroyed by fire sometime before 1913 but duplicates of most of his species were in the collection of Suter (formerly at Wanganui but now in the National Museum, Wellington), and these specimens are the basis of the records made by Suter in his Manual13. These collections furthermore provide the distribution records for Climo5'6 in his review of the New Zealand Charopids. -

Gut check: predatory ecology of the invasive wrinkled frog (Glandirana rugosa) in Hawai´i By Melissa J. Van Kleeck and Brenden S. Holland* Abstract Invertebrates constitute the most diverse Pacific island animal lineages, and have correspondingly suffered the most significant extinction rates. Losses of native invertebrate lineages have been driven largely by ecosystem changes brought about by loss of habitat and direct predation by introduced species. Although Hawaii notably lacks native terrestrial reptiles and amphibians, both intentional and unintentional anthropogenic releases of herpetofauna have resulted in the establishment of more than two dozen species of frogs, toads, turtles, lizards, and a snake. Despite well-known presence of nonnative predatory species in Hawaii, ecological impacts remain unstudied for a majority of these species. In this study, we evaluated the diet of the Japanese wrinkled frog, Glandirana rugosa, an intentional biocontrol release in the Hawaiian Islands in the late 19th century. We collected live frogs on Oahu and used museum collections from both Oahu and Maui to determine exploited diet composition. These data were then compared to a published dietary analysis from the native range in Japan. We compiled and summarized field and museum distribution data from Oahu, Maui, and Kauai to document the current range of this species. Gut content analyses suggest that diet composition in the Hawaiian Islands is significantly different from that that in its native Japan. In the native range, the dominant taxonomic groups by volume were Coleoptera (beetles), Lepidoptera (moths, butterflies) and Formicidae (ants). Invasive frogs in Hawaii exploited mostly Dermaptera (earwigs), Amphipoda (landhoppers) and Hemiptera (true bugs). -
