Nepal Red Cross Society Flood and Land slide information bulletin No: 24-08082007 General Information: The monsoon started from the 10 July, 2007 and unrelenting precipitation to date has set off flood and landslide in 36 Districts the country. Some Districts are lightly affected claiming few lives (see statistics for details). Flood has affected Far Western District; Kailali , Mid Western Districts; Bankey, Bardiya and Dang , Western District; Nawalprasi and Rupendhei Eastern Districts; Sunsari, Morang Jhapa and Udayapur and Central Terai Districts; Rauthat , Bara , Parsa , siraha , Sarlahi , Saptari , Mohhatari , Dhanusa , Rauthat Whilst , Landslide has affected Baglung , Dolkha , Jajarkot , Puythan , Ramechhap, Saynga, surkhet, Dolakha, Dadeldhura, Shankhuwashaba, Dang, Surkhet, Gulmi, Parbat, Khotang, Dhading, Panchthar and Bajura Districts. Preliminary assessment carried out by NRCS DC has recognized that 96 people have died; displaced families are 20, 816 and over 56, 192 families have been affected, 2 is still missing and 55 are injured. Total 337, 241 people reportedly affected through the country . 22, 248 houses are partially and 15, 819 houses are completely destroyed. The assessment has highlighted immediate shelter, clean drinking water and food needs. Health issues appeared in five districts; Rauthaut , Dhanusa , Bardiya , Banke and Kailali and potential to appear in other affected district, if logging continued for more days. NRCS DCs have mobilized staffs and volunteers teams for assessment and relief operation and detail assessment is being carried out by District Chapters. NRCS DCs has provided food to over 23,975 families, covering estimated 143, 850 individuals and NFRI to 4992 (including 4670 families receiving NFRI kits and 250 families receiving clothes and other items) families. NRCS DC and HQ have been coordinating with local government authorities and other stakeholders to run relief and response operation. The comprehensive assessment is now on process in the Districts along with other partners at district level and reports are being received. NRCS HQ deployed staff are supporting our districts chapter for coordination and relief management at district level. NRCS has started posting information bulletin on IFRC web-site form the support of IFRC country office and South Asian Regional Delegation, Delhi. NRCS has also posted DREF (Disaster Relief Emergency Fund) bulletin in the IFRC web-site. Some NRCS DC has started comprehensive assessment amid the rain fall and water logging. The reports have envisaged; renovation of houses, re-storing public infrastructure, providing basic HH items, addressing livelihood options and providing staple food as long term needs. Government has requested WFP to feed 10000 families for three months. WFP and NRCS are in process to develop a comprehensive work plan for food distribution. Water and insect related health problems are being reported in some Districts. The detail assessment will be received by tomorrow. However detailed reports are yet to be received as some villages are still in-accessible due to water logging Immediate needs-2000 NFRI kits to secure temporary shelter and basic HH needs of the victims 5 Bara 83 VDC and 3 969 5814 - - NRCS DC has mobilized three assessment teams for affected VDC and Municipality assessment is still in process. Initial assessment pointed out 400 additional affected families and NRCS has dispatched 330 NFRI kits to cover Amiratgunj, Inurwamal and Hardiya VDC. NRCS regional warehouse Birjaung has provided 200 tarpaulins. 2 S. Assessment is being hampered by transitional conflict. some cases of fever, diarrhea has been recorded (number still not confirmed) NRCS Birgaunj warehouse has provided 2000 Meter plastic sheet and 500 NFRI kits. 7 Siraha 70 VDC and 2 3445 20670 3 1680 Total 70 VDC and 2 Municipality are affected, of which 28VDC are most municipality affected. NRCS DC together with other stakeholders has formed 13 assessment teams. 5000 Hectare of agriculture land is covered with sand and planted paddy is destroyed. Five link roads to the several villages are destroyed. Four schools are partially damaged. NRCS has stock of 300 NFRI kits, 600 tarpaulins and ready to eat food for 750 families provided by SC-US. CDO and NA are coordinating with NRCS DC for assessment and other relief works. DC expects to spend four more days to complete assessment in all remaining VDC. Distribution process is still continuing. Assessment is finished in 42 VDC and 1 municipality out of 70 VDC and 2 municipalities. 8 Saptari 33 VDC 6,150 36,900 3 5, 000 According to initial assessment, more than 5000 houses are damaged. NRCS has stock of Initial of beaten rice-360 kg, salt-790 kg, plastic mat-100 pcs, sugar-50 kg, bsicuits-17,600 packets, rice-7000 kg, oil-700 liter, noodles- 3210 packets, medicine and tarpaulins-580 pcs. Total 330 hectare of land either damaged or filled with sand slurry. Public and life serving service; hand pumps, road, bridges at four VDC is completely destroyed. Crops planted in 1000 Hectare completely damaged 9 Mahottari 54 VDC and 1 8514 52091 5 2300 Initial assessment carried out by NRCS DC has confirmed that around 51, Municipality 384 people of 8, 411 families are affected, 90% crop is damaged and about 2, 333 dwellings are completely destroyed. 2, 300 families are staying outside in road and school. 42 Kilometer black topped road is washed away by flood, two schools and one Madarsha is destroyed. Similarly, three bridges and two culverts were destroyed. Initial estimated loss is around NRs. 40, 000,000.00. NRCS has established four distribution centers; jaleshor Municipality, Pipra VDC, Ramgopalpur (Bardibas) and Manara VDC. Distribution is still in process and reports are being collected. NRCS DC has stock of 450 tarpaulins, 400 pair of clothes and 400 utensils. 3 S. Assessment municipality is being carried out by NRCS DC with six assessment teams, covering all affected VDC. NRCS has also established six different distribution center (yadukuha, Parabaha, dhanusa Dham, Janakpur Municipality and Bengadabar), covering all affected VDC. NRCS has asked for at least 2500 NFRI kits. The assessment is hampered by water logging and bad condition of road. 12 Nawalprasi 13 VDC and 1 2, 089 7, 200 - 632 Total 2,089 families are affected. 100 Hectare Ag. Land destroyed. NRCS Municipality Makar SC has distributed rice, pulse, oil and salt to the affected families of Makar and Bethani VDC. The assessment and relief is still hampered by water logging 13 Baglung 3 VDC 68 440 29 6 Situation is stabilized 14 Jajrkot 2 VDC 10 42 3 - Situation is stabilized 15 Gulmi 1 VDC 30 180 7 20 Total 30 families are affected and 20 families are still not able to get back to their house and taking shelter in safe place.
