In 2008 UNESCO awarded Glasgow the title of ‘City of Music’ and the application dossier submitted in support of this title noted the importance of rock and pop for the city’s musical reputation. Since the late 1970s a large number of bands have emerged from (or been associated with) the city, yet little academic research has been carried out to determine the factors behind this phenomenon.

  • Mark Lanegan Gargoyle Album Download Mark Lanegan Band: Gargoyle Review – a Career High
mark lanegan gargoyle album download Mark Lanegan Band: Gargoyle review – a career high. Always keen on collaborations – he has previously worked with Soulsavers, Queens of the Stone Age, PJ Harvey, Moby and Isobel Campbell, among others – much of Mark Lanegan’s 10th solo album was composed with British musician Rob Marshall, the rest with longtime foil Alain Johannes. The results represent a career high, the synths, Krautrock rhythms and flashes of electronica (witness the drum’n’bass loop anchoring Drunk on Destruction) first introduced on 2012’s Blues Funeral very much to the fore, and perfectly complementing the abrasive guitars and Lanegan’s grizzled baritone. Throughout, the influences of New Order and Xtrmntr -era Primal Scream loom large, most notably on the brooding and suitably dark Nocturne. The irresistible Emperor, by contrast, sounds positively jaunty, while the acoustic Goodbye to Beauty is a more sombre delight. A bravura statement from an artist still sounding fresh three decades into his career. Heavenly Recordings. Released via Heavenly Recordings on April 28th, 2017. Available on standard black vinyl with download, or CD. While sharing roots with its two predecessors, on Gargoyle there’s a significant up-shift in the swaggering powerlode of such keynote songs as Nocturne and Beehive, while the lyrics’ tonal palette is more varied. The album title comes from a lyric in Blue Blue Sea – “Gargoyle perched on gothic spire” – and was chosen for its hint of self-deprecation. “I’m most proud of the songs that are atypical to stuff that I’ve done in the past” says Mark.

  • Gender Ventriloquism in Studio Production
Gender Ventriloquism in Studio Production Helen Reddington University of East London [email protected] Abstract A process of ventriloquism, with male producers speaking through the mouthpieces of the women they produce, can reinforce gender delineations in pop. After discussing ventriloquism in pop and demonstrating different ways in which this has happened using historical examples, the author’s original interviews with women who record male artists are examined to discover whether a similar process takes place when roles are reversed. The author concludes that aspects of ventriloquism are inherent in production, although some women producers have questioned gender roles during this process. She also notes that as more female mediators enter the profession, we may hear more authentic expressions of women’s identities in popular music. KEYWORDS: ventriloquism, recording, women producers and engineers Introduction At the 2014 Art of Record Production conference in Oslo, the US recording engineer Susan Rogers (who worked with Prince in the 1980s) described me a discussion she had with a group of women engineers about male vocalists, during which she realized that this was the first time she had ever experienced a situation that must have been quite normal in the record industry: that of studio professionals of one gender discussing the aesthetic qualities of the singing voices of the other- including what they found ‘sexy’ (Rogers 2014). This time however, in a reversal of normal practice, the mediators were female, and the vocalists were male. This observation by Rogers threw into relief the implications for female vocalists of the aesthetics of their performances being mediated almost exclusively by male engineers and producers who are positioned as audio gatekeepers, and therefore aesthetic arbiters, of what we listen to in mainstream popular music.

  • Year End Booklet 2006
philippa’s intro bit... It’s been a fantastic year here at Piccadilly Records, what with one thing or another, so here’s a look at the 2006 highlights: Obviously winning the Music Week award for best independent record store was a major coup, and a real reward for all the hard work everyone here puts into making the shop and website good places to buy music. Hopefully we manage to pass on our enthusiasm for the records and CDs we sell, without any of the elitism or snobbery often found in indie shops. On the back of the Music Week award we also ended up being one of the best record shops in the country (The Guardian) and best shops (not just record shops!) in the world (The Observer), while Tim and I were invited onto the airwaves GMR and Radio 4 respectively. The shop’s usual summer heat-wave coincided in part with the World Cup meaning we actually got to take a bit of time off to watch the England matches (oh, lucky us!). Looking back at my intro from our Summer booklet shows how wildly optimistic I was: I mean, England to get knocked out of the World Cup in the semis by Brazil - like that was going to happen! Hopefully we’ll do better in The Ashes (only a few days away as I write this!). On the staffing front Mark Ward added us to the long list of Manchester record shops he’s worked for then decided to head out to the sunnier climes of Australia to work for his dad instead, so good luck to him.

All copies have gone, and they went quickly. On the strength of this, the editors haven‟t doubled the print-run or negotiated till-point distribution rights with the publishers of Hello, but we have decided to keep on with the documentation of pleasurable and/or thought-provoking things. In this issue that means sounds: the melodic but lyrically surprising band Belle and Sebastian; Fred Hunter‟s account of recording activities in the 1960s (with its strong connections to the world of Migrant, discussed in our first issue), and the strange Latinate textures of Joseph Macleod. There is a curious gap in this – a piece on sound poetry itself, and so, for a later issue, the invitation goes out for a piece perhaps recounting a history of sound poetry in England, Wales, and Scotland since the 60s, or, perhaps more challenging, a piece on where sound poetry is now. A digital version of PS will appear in due course on the poetrymagazines.org.uk site.

Dance clubs of the late 1990s reflected the general euphoria of the new generation of white-collar engineers, all of them aspiring millionaires. The rock bands rooted in the white and black traditions of the land, instead, reflected the down-to-earth attitude of the working class. Precisely because it was an age of rapid change, that was making old lifestyles obsolete and creating totally new ones, in which people were learning to shop on-line and talk on cellular phones and telecommute, it was also an age of personal confusion, of identity crisis, of insecurity. Uncle Tupelo bred two offshoots. Jay Farrar's Son Volt were mostly a vehicle for their leader's philosophizing: Trace (1995) was a concept album that analyzed the collective subconscious of the people of the Mississippi river. Jeff Tweedy's Wilco (3) expanded Uncle Tupelo's vocabulary towards the Byrds' folk-rock, Neil Young's mournful ballads, the Rolling Stones' drunk rhythm'n'blues, the Band's domestic gospel-rock, Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde and Big Star's baroque pop on their second album, Being There (1996).
