One side of modernmodern has been portrayed onon film:film: postpost-industrial-industrial lifelife inin aa city fallen on hard times. Poverty, violence, alcoholism and drugs. But Glasgow is also filled with warmthwarmth and humorhumor andand has aa vibrantvibrant musicmusic scenescene from which iconoclastic bands have been emerging forfor thethe past 3030 years. As a result, young people from all over converge here and delve. IntoInto the arts, thethe parks and gardens, the cafes, spilling into the venues, where sincesince the 70’s,70's, new bands and iconsicons alike —– Blondie, Blondie, The Smiths and any other bandband that’sthat's meant somethingsomething –— have have been playing to one ofof thethe most raucous yet discerning audiences inin the world.world. Here amidst the pubs, clubs, dance halls, cafes, tenements, gardens and lanes isis set Stuart MurdMurdoch'soch’s musical film, God HelpHelp The GirlGirl.. He aspired in his words to tell the story ofof “a"a betterbetter summer, summer, oror atat leastleast aa summersummer when something happened.”happened." “It"It happened to a boyboy and a girlgirl and a girl, girl, inin a citycity roughlyroughly the same size and populationpopulation ofof Glasgow.Glasgow. The streets emptier whenwhen youyou neededneeded themthem toto be, and thethe beatbeat clubsclubs busier than the ones around here. But on the whole the citycity was this one.”one." According to Producer Barry Mendel, “It’s"It's a ssimpleimple storystory ---- about thethe briefbrief moment after you’veyou've realized what you want to do withwith youryour lifelife but before itit settlessettles intointo a job, when you’reyou're filled with enthusiasm, meeting likelike-minded-minded friendsfriends andand thethe possibilities are endless.”endless." In 2003, Stuart Murdoch was out forfor aa runrun whenwhen a tunetune came intointo hishis head. “I"I could hear the whole thing. I always have a littlelittle bitbit ofof paperpaper andand pencilpencil withwith meme whenever I go out, so I jotted down the tune and I went back andand wrotewrote the wordswords downdown fast.”fast." He immediately knew itit wasn’twasn't a song forfor BelleBelle && Sebastian. “[It"[It was]was] thethe completeness in which it hit me,”me," Murdoch describes, “I"I thouthought, ght, ‘Nah,'Nah, this isn't forfor thethe group, this is something else.’else.' It's almost likelike [I’d][I'd] been givengiven thisthis littlelittle present and II thought, ‘OK,'OK, I'm going to get this, I'm goinggoing to go afterafter this.this. This isis goinggoing toto bebe something new and fun.’”fun." One tune led to another and before longlong the charactercharacter ofof EveEve emerged and started to talk. James came next, then Cassie, and as allall theirtheir thoughtsthoughts evolved, so did a girlgirl group soundsound,, a storystory and a sense that itit wanted to be a film, film, a musical. Murdoch had toyed with the idea ofof filfilmmakingmmaking before. InIn 2000,2000, he andand thethe guitarist of BelleBelle && Sebastian, , discussed developing a moviemovie for thethe band.band. “[I’d]"[I'd] becamebecame entranced with filmfilm the wayway II used toto be entrancedentranced withwith music, music, andand tooktook great comfort in watching favourite filmsfilms over and over.”over." HeHe recalled, recalled, “I"I alwaysalways wantedwanted to basebase a story round the ‘Grosvenor'Grosvenor Cafe’Cafe' which closedclosed aroundaround thatthat time.time. II couldn’tcouldn't stand that it closed, so that was a surrogacysurrogacy thing. I wanted to keep allall thethe characters withwith me. But I got busy with music again and never tooktook itit forward.”forward." After Belle & Sebastian'sSebastian’s Life Pursuit Tour inin 2006, MurdochMurdoch beganbegan writingwriting thethe screenplay, calling it God HelpHelp The GirlGirl,, after that firstfirst songsong thatthat camecame toto himhim threethree yearsyears earlier on an afternoon run.

The SongSongs

SSoonoon after he began workingworking on the script, Murdoch placedplaced anan openopen callcall forfor singers in The ListList,, a UKUK eventevent-listing-listing magazine:

GirlGirl singers needed fortbr autumnalautumnal recordingrecording project.project. Must havehave aa wayway withwith aa tune.tune. CelineCeline Dion wannabes, save your breath. Ballpark, RonRonettes, ettes, Friend andand Lover,Lover, Twinkle.Twinkle. PhonePhone Neil: 0141 227 2751.

“"InIn the initial round, II placed a smallsmall advertisement inin aa locallocal newspaper, newspaper, anan anonymous ad. I auditioned about 20 people,”people," Stuart explains.explains. One ofof themthem waswas CeliaCelia Garcia. "Celia“Celia lives just round the corner.corner. I refer to her as a pseudopseudo Scot. Her dad'sdad's fromfrom BoBolivialivia I think, though she was born inin Kirkcaldy.Kirkcaldy. II wantwant to claimclaim herher asas aa Scot,Scot, butbut she justjust seems too glam or something. [She][Shel proved herher capabilitiescapabilities onon thethe BelleBelle && SebastianSebastian track ‘Are'Are You Coming Over for Christmas?’”Christmas?" Murdoch first met Alex KloboukKlobouk inin BBerlin.erlin. “She'd"She'd beenbeen pickedpicked byby ourour GermanGerman to be Germany's most Catastrophic Waitress. (Our LPLP at thethe timetime was calledcalled Dear Catastrophe Waitress.) I don't know ifif theythey looked that hard though. She didn'tdidn't looklook catastrophic to me. We didn't know whawhatt to do withwith her, her, she waswas justjust hanging aboutabout backstage, looking uncatastrophic. So we gave her a uniform, uniform, and wewe hadhad her comecome onon stage and throw hot drinks and custard pies around. She got her picturepicture inin thethe BerlinBerlin paper the next day. The hheadlineeadline was Germany's Worst Waitress. Her humourlesshumourless boss saw the picture and sacked her! I felt a littlelittle culpable, what withwith thethe lossloss ofof earningsearnings and everything. So we brought her over to Glasgow to cheer herher up,up, and wewe putput herher onon aa record cover and in a video. And it was whilewhile she was over that II heard her singing.”singing." “A"A couple of yearsyears later, we opened it up to the internet, and wewe hadhad about 400400 singers apply, and then maybe another 30 on top apply withwith theirtheir own videosvideos theythey sent in.”in." Some went as far as making fairly sophisticated shortshort filmsfilms and postingposting themthem onon YouTube. Eventually, Dina Bankole and BrittanyBrittany Stallings won thethe onlineonline competitioncompetition toto come and record with the group. But Murdoch stillstill wasn’twasn't set onon a leadlead vocalist, vocalist, “I"I wanted somebody ttoo come inin and blast it. I just wanted a sensational voice.”voice." AA friendfriend ofof aa

! ! friend made him aware ofof CatherineCatherine Ireton, a collegecollege seniorsenior livingliving inin DublinDublin whowho sang vocals in a pop band Elephant. She also had musicalmusical-theater-theater experience, experience, havinghaving performed at her allall-girls-girls high school. Ireton was intrigued by the project: “When"When [Stuart][Stuart] first explainedexplained it,it, hehe saidsaid ‘I'm'I'm looking for some girls because I'mI'm thinkingthinking about puttingputting togethertogether aa girlgirl group.’group.' And thatthat was about the extent ofof howhow he described it. And II was like, like, ‘Ok,'0k, suresure---- thethe bandband thatthat I'dI'd been in, Elephant, disbanded.’disbanded.' So the thought ofof puttingputting togethertogether sortsort ofof aa poppop group was like, ‘why'why the hell not?’”not?" Ireton flew from DublinDublin toto Glasgow and made herher wayway toto thethe BelleBelle && SebastianSebastian headquarters, a twotwo-story-story ramshackle building inin a WestWest EndEnd alleyalley populatedpopulated byby anan almost unbelievable number ofof straystray cats. She was excited and nervous, saying toto herself, herself, “Belle"Belle & Sebastian, here I am!'”am!" Murdoch asked her to sing the title cut, “God"God HelpHelp The Girl”Girl" and a BelleBelle && SSebastianebastian song, "Dress“Dress Up In You,”You," and she got the part.part. “I"I could onlyonly pickpick oneone personperson toto sing lead and Catherine's voice suited the main character EveEve reallyreally well.”well."

Partnership

Meanwhile, in , Murdoch’sMurdoch's open callcall forfor singerssingers caught thethe eyeeye ofof film producer BarryBarry Mendel.Mendel. He’dHe'd becomebecome aa fanfan ofof Belle Belle && SebastianSebastian afterafter aa friendfriend tooktook him to a show at the Hollywood Bowl. “They"They played withwith the L.A.L.A. Philharmonic, and itit was really special concert. Stuart was almost crazilycrazily enthusiastic, bopping aroundaround tthehe stage, and at first I’dI'd wondered howhow sincere thatthat levellevel ofof enthusiasmenthusiasm couldcould possiblypossibly be.be. But over the course ofof thethe show, I began to see itit was real. Afterward, II wentwent backback toto theirtheir records that I hadn'thadn’t paid much attentionattention toto and startedstarted listeninglistening more and more andand moremore hearing more in them, too. AA year went by and itit was stillstill the main thingthing II was listeninglistening to.”to."

SeeingSeeing Murdoch’sMurdoch's open callcall for singers, Mendel noted “a"a subtle, subtle, vague referencereference that maybe it would have something toto do withwith a moviemovie at some point. MyMy ears perkedperked upup and I decided to write a fan letter through the Belle && Sebastian websitewebsite saying, ‘by'by thethe by, I’mI'm a fan and I work in movies, so ifif youyou need any assistance, happy toto help.’help.' And

! !

Stuart got in touch.”touch." Murdoch was already well intointo the scriptscript atat thisthis point: “[It"[It was]was] likelike [Barry][Barry] was reading my diary or my mind or something. He said ifif BelleBelle && Sebastian werewere everever toto make a filmfilm that he’dhe'd like to help.”help." MendelMendel recalls MurdochMurdoch replyingreplying that, that, “he’d"he'd actuallyactually watched a lot of mymy movmovies, ies, as much as II listened toto hishis music.”music." “We"We had aa disgustingdisgusting mutual admiration moment.”moment." “It"It was a shy courtship,”courtship," Mendel explains. “I’d"I'd ask questions, he’dhe'd send a character …Eventuallysketch...Eventually he shared his writings —– two two thirdsthirds ofof aa storystory thatthat wwasas already 240 pages."pages.” Mendel enjoyed working with someone relatively new toto it,it, having spent mostmost ofof his career working with emerging filmmakers, filmmakers, producing the early filmsfilms ofof WesWes Anderson, Night Shyamalan, , , and PaulPaul Feig.Feig. “Wit"Withh mymy coming along, just because I’dI'd done some movies Stuart had identified with, with, itit seemed like he thought, ‘what'what a stroke ofof luck!’luck!' Little diddid he know...”know..." Mendel was tough on the script. He describes the process as “productive"productive and fun”fun" though “at"at times frfrustratingustrating to Stuart.”Stuart." “He’d"He'd finishfinish a draftdraft and be like, like, ‘Ok,'Ok, let’slet's gogo make the movie,’movie,' and I’dI'd say, ‘We’re'We're withinwithin 4 years ofof beingbeing able toto call itit aa firstfirst draft’draft' or something truly obnoxious like that.”that." But Mendel felt Murdoch’sMurdoch's basic story was compelling and that the scenes had the same spark ofof originalityoriginality and honesty he foundfound inin Murdoch’sMurdoch's music.music. “He’s"He's aa talentedtalented wordsmith, though not naturally a screenwriterscreenwriter inin the sense that, likelike hishis songs, the moviemovie came to him in flashes…Heflashes...He had an idea ofof whatwhat the momovievie was about andand moments oror vibes he wanted to capture, but the challenge ofof aa long, long, sustained narrativenarrative architecturearchitecture was new to him, not as natural as creating a song or short storystory thatthat cancan be moremore wispywispy oror like a photograph capturing a mere tone oror moomood."d.” Mendel continues, “Writing"Writing forfor StuartStuart is very subconscious. He’llHe'll wake up fromfrom a dream andand writewrite somethingsomething down.down. OrOr something will just come to him. A film is suchsuch anan extendedextended storystory thatthat youyou havehave toto bringbring more intellect to it, too, to understand why cecertainrtain thingsthings workwork andand don’tdon't work, work, toto havehave certain goals. To some artists, having a goal is sometimes diametricallydiametrically opposed toto whatwhat works best in their process. So it was an interestinginteresting challengechallenge he found himself in.in. ToTo gogo up into his head, back down to his emotions, then up intointo his head, again andand so on.”on."

Recording the AAlbumlbum

With the screenplay still a workwork inin progress and the singers assembled, MurdochMurdoch decided to record a fullfull ofof thethe songs first. He feltfelt the songs were thethe truetrue basisbasis ofof the film. As a musician, musician, he feltfelt alsoalso moremore confidentconfident inin realizingrealizing theirtheir potentialpotential thanthan mounting a whole film and feltfelt he couldcould hopefully use thethe completedcompleted songssongs asas furtherfurther inspiration, too. He was able toto get the support ofof RoughRough Trade RecordsRecords and MatadorMatador who he’dhe'd worked with on the Belle && Sebastian records, and so he was off.off. “It"It was quitequite a slow process,"process,” Murdoch describes, “I"I remember phoningphoning [lead vocalvocalist]ist] Catherine up,up, and she'd be in her officeoffice in , and I'd say, ‘Try'Try and sing this…’this...' And I'dI'd sing a bit down the phone, and she'd sing me itit back. I'd work outout the key that waswas best forfor her, her, while she was sat in front ofof thethe computer withwith the rest ofof thethe officeoffice lookinglooking atat herher kindkind of funny.”funny." Members of BelleBelle && Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Teenage Fan ClubClub and other Glasgow regulars formed the backing band in the studio. Ireton sang lead on halfhalf thethe songs but Murdoch also brought in KimKim Moore fromfrom ZoeZoeyy VanVan GoeyGoey toto portrayportray EveEve inin the spoken word “Howard"Howard Jones Is MyMy Mozart,”Mozart," thethe bb-side-side to the album’salbum's firstfirst single, single, “Come"Come Monday Night.”Night." Neil Hannon, lead singersinger ofof TheThe DivineDivine Comedy, sang leadlead onon “Perfection"Perfection as a Hipster,”Hipster," a duet with Ireton. ContestContest-winner-winner BrittanyBrittany StallingsStallings sang leadlead on the girlgirl-group-group remake ofof BelleBelle && Sebastian hithit “Funny"Funny LittleLittle Frog”Frog" andand alsoalso onon “Down"Down and Dusky Blonde”Blonde" where she was joined by fellowfellow contestcontest-winner-winner DinaDina Bankhole. Aysa from the SeattleSeattle-based-based group Smoosh also sang onon “Down"Down andand DuskyDusky Blonde”Blonde" and sang lead on “I"I Just Want Your Jeans.”Jeans." InIn thisthis way, Murdoch cast thethe rightright singers to put each song across. The albumalbum was released June 2009 to critical acclaim, The GuardianGuardian callingcalling thethe tunes “uniformly"uniformly fantastic”fantastic" and other criticcriticss expressing joyjoy at Murdoch’sMurdoch's newnew creativecreative outlet. A single, “Funny",”Frog," followed in July. Four monthsmonths later, the StillsStills EPEP was released, featuring six new songs with vocals from Ireton, Celia GarciaGarcia takingtaking the lead on “Baby’s"Baby's Just Waiting”Waiting" and AlAlexex KloboukKlobouk singingsinging lead onon thethe titletitle track.track. featuring Linnea JönssonJonsson fromfrom the Swedish band, Those DancingDancing Days.Days. Next, a live group was formed withwith Ireton, Garcia, and KloboukKlobouk and members ofof Belle & Sebastian, Teenage Fan Club, and otherother GlasgowGlasgow bands backing them. They kicked off withwith a small show at the Landsdowne Church inin Glasgow, a homeyhomey affaffairair withwith cakes and a short set taken from the main LP and StillsStills.. Following, a small tour was organized, the band playingplaying soldsold outout shows at thethe Crossing Borders Festival in The Hague on a double billbill withwith Tegan && Sara, alone inin at the famed 100 Club and a biggerbigger concert backed by the fullfull BBCBBC Orchestra in Edinburgh’sEdinburgh's Usher Hall.Hall. Mendel joined them in the van forfor the tour. “It"It was inspirational. II thought, ‘if'if wewe can make a movie that can bring these songs to life inin a wayway thatthat feelsfeels natural, natural, andand ifif thethe rest ofof thethe movie can be as good as the songs...’songs...' It justjust drovedrove meme toto want toto helphelp makemake itit happen.”happen."

Coalescence

In late 2008, Mendel remembers a particularlyparticularly challengingchallenging momentmoment inin thethe writingwriting process, one that he wasn’twasn't sure the partnershippartnership wwouldould survive. “Stuart"Stuart finishedfinished a second draft, and then we sat back and gave it a good read. II made an assessmentassessment thatthat itit was notnot yet what it ought to be, and we had a painfulpainful backback-to-the-drawing-board-to-the-drawing-board moment.moment. Stuart justjust hadn’thadn't expected it, like, ‘Really?'Really? After allall this, scrap itit and go backback andand rethinkrethink thethe whole thing?’”thing?" Though challenging at times, the script development process was ultimatelyultimately productive. Mendel explains, “If"If wewe have disagreements, they alwaysalways leadlead toto interesting discussions. He'll conviconvincence me ofof anan idea I didn't thinkthink wewe couldcould do. He's gotgot ideasideas thatthat are outside the box without trying to be outside the box.box. He's gotgot aa naturalnatural originality."originality." “He"He was also industrious. He did go away and rethink thethe thingthing and came backback with a new, more persopersonalnal and specific story. Which at firstfirst made thingsthings aa littlelittle messiermessier but it ultimately made for a much better film.”film." Mendel recalled a pivotalpivotal moment during Murdoch’sMurdoch's next visitvisit toto Los Angeles, “We"We had these different drafts. There were tons ofof scenes, scenes, sometimes they werewere inin and

! ! sometimes out, sometimes certain songs were inin and sometimes out.out. There werewere soso manymany good ideas, ideas, but it didn't yet coalesce into a whole. So one night at The MagicMagic Castle Hotel in Hollywood where Stuart was staying, we got together indexindex cards ofof everyevery scene he’dhe'd ever written, twice as many as were inin the longlong script we had at thethe time.time. And we colcolor-codedor-coded them. A scene to do with Eve’sEve's illness, that was one color.color. AA scene withwith Anton, that was another. The James romance, another. Formation ofof thethe band, another. We had a bottle ofof whiskey, whiskey, some dark chocolate, it was late at nightnight and wewe justjust putput inindexdex cards out on the carpet one by one, telling the story, story, making sure itit feltfelt musicalmusical and that we didn’tdidn't drop any balls. That was when itit finallyfinally clicked.clicked. Scenes wentwent inin thethe garbage can. Songs did, too. Scenes came in a differentdifferent order thanthan theythey werewere befobefore.re. When we were done, we stacked the cards in that order, put itit into an outline, outline, and thatthat became the script that actually worked and the filmfilm we have today.”today." This accomplished, Murdoch went back toto workwork withwith Belle && Sebastian, writingwriting songs, rehearsing andand recording Write About LoveLove (2010) and embarkingembarking onon aa worldworld tour to support it.

Expanding the Production TTeameam

While Murdoch toured, Mendel began pursuing financingfinancing forfor thethe production.production. “We"We recognized we were in over our heads, and wewe broughtbrought onon partnerspartners CaroleCarole SheridanSheridan (Singer Films)Films) in Scotland and Curling and PhilPhil RobertsonRobertson (Zephyr(Zephyr Films)Films) inin London.”London." “Peopl"Peoplee in the UKUK have to put together moviesmovies inin a veryvery challenging way.way. Also, this was a filmfilm to be prepped, prepped, shot, shot, edited, edited, mixed, everything, in Glasgow. “We"We decided that having Carole withwith herher vastvast experienceexperience in Scottish moviemaking, which isis unique, and ZephyrZephyr downdown inin LondonLondon withwith thethe wonderful relationships they’vethey've nurtured over the years, their experienceexperience and also expertise handling all the legal and financial intricacies, were each trulytruly essential…Theyessential... Funding

Financing an independentindependent filmfilm isis alwaysalways difficult, difficult, butbut GodGod HelpHelp TheThe GirlGirl provedproved especially tough. The lowlow-key-key simplicity and sincerity ofof thethe storystory was a hardhard sellsell toto established UK filmfilm institutions, who seemed toto be lookinglooking forfor eithereither edgieredgier projectsprojects oror still more formallformallyy oldold-fashioned-fashioned ones. After several tripstrips to London, itit becamebecame clearclear toto Murdoch and Mendel that they did not share a commoncommon language withwith thethe U.K.U.K. indie establishment. Mendel was blunt, “We"We talked to FilmFilm 4 and BBCBBC Films andand thethe BFIBFI people and none ofof themthem understood what we were after. They just didn’tdidn't connect.connect. The constant rejection was disappointing, we really needed their support, support, you can’tcan't makemake aa song and dance musical on real filmfilm forfor free.free. ButBut justjust likelike beingbeing withwith thethe wrongwrong romanticromantic partner, it also helped us understand and commitcommit to who we were, what we were about, about, and why working with them would have never been rightright inin the firstfirst place. So wewe scaledscaled down our production ambitions some and pushed forward. What else couldcould we do? It was either that or give up.”up." The projectproject did receive the maximummaximum support fromfrom Creative Scotland,Scotland, the national development agency for the arts. offered some seed moneymoney forfor aa website. Hanway (Shame)(Shame) came in toto spearhead sales and successfully arrangedarranged UKUK distributidistributionon with Metrodome ((DonnieDonnie Darko) and in Spain. Private investors trickledtrickled in,in, too —– fansfans ofof thethe band, also the founders ofof JeepsterJeepster RecordsRecords whowho firstfirst signedsigned BelleBelle && Sebastian in 1996 and released their first fourfour .albums. But itit waswas notnot enough.enough. In December 2012,2012, the team launched a KickstarterKickstarter campaign.campaign. The SSearchearch for ActorsActors

Murdoch and Mendel were aware ofof howhow hard itit would be to findfind actorsactors whowho could sing, perform, and believably portray the songwriting lead singer.singer. Finding a realreal songwriter whoswhosee acting could carry a filmfilm would bebe equallyequally hardhard oror harder.harder. SoSo inin Spring,Spring, 2010, more than two years before shooting, they formally began the search. Their key collaborators were casting directordirector KahleenKahleen Crawford,Crawford, a GlasgowGlasgow native and her associate CarolinCarolinee Stewart. Crawford doesn’tdoesn't remember exactlyexactly howhow she first heard about God Help The GirlGirl (“probably("probably fromfrom somesome friendfriend whowho is much moremore hiphip than me”),me"), but she went to coffee with MurdochMurdoch and they hithit itit offoff immediately.immediately. Crawford was excited, having never cacastst a musical. A net was cast far and wide. Amateurs and professionals alike werewere encouragedencouraged toto submit for the main roles. Over two thousand applied, some appearing inin personperson atat Crawford’sCrawford's office in Glasgow, but most sending “self"self tape”tape" videos ofof themselvesthemselves doingdoing scenes and performingperforming songs. Poring over the footage, Murdoch gained a greater respect forfor thethe craftcraft ofof acting.acting. “I"I think [it’s][it's] a universal force. Mendel describes it as the most ambitious casting search ofof hishis career, “Before"Before that was Rushmore where wewe ssawaw 1000 people to find ‘Max.’”'Max." “[On"[On GodGod HelpHelp TheThe GirlGirl]] a third of whowho we saw were pro singers who hadn’thadn't had movie experience and twotwo thirds were actors with no singing experience.”experience." “We"We were lookinglooking forfor a certaincertain combinationcombination ofof qualities that made Eve very difficult to cast.”cast." Narrowing down actors from the tapes, Crawford, Murdoch and Mendel beganbegan holding select group casting sessions in Glasgow and London. Murdoch wouldwould prepare games and exercises for the session, “I"I felt likelike a teacherteacher preparingpreparing mymy lesson eacheach day.day. The actors swore that they had a good time!”time!"
