Course Information: The course is designed as one of the courses for the Graduate Certificate in International Health, hence there is a graduate level focus on the learning and activities in the course. Upper Division undergraduate students with an interest in global health may be accepted based on academic standing and background. Students will make their own travel arrangements to Cardiff, Wales where the course will be headquartered. Recommended lodging will be provided, but students may make arrangements elsewhere. The course is being offered in collaboration with the University of South Wales. Academic curriculum includes lectures from professionals and government representatives in Wales, visits with administrators and clinicians at healthcare facilities in South Wales, both in urban areas and rural areas. In addition a number of cultural activities are planned to give students an understanding of the people and institutions in Wales. There is an international airport in Cardiff so students can plan flights direct to Cardiff from Amsterdam and Dublin (plus others). Cardiff is a 2 ½ drive from Heathrow Airport in London or a similar time on the train or bus. The bus is more convenient and leaves from the terminals at Heathrow. The central downtown is a walking mall area (Saint David’s Center) making shopping and eating fairly easy. Cardiff Bay is a newer area on the waterfront where the Parliament Building and Performing Arts Center is located as well as several restaurants, pubs, and shops. The Bay is an easy bus ride from downtown. Lodging accommodations are the responsibility of the participant. Here are two website suggested by the University of South Wales. There may be other accommodations through B&B sites or student hostel sites. The instructor will be staying at either the Hilton Cardiff or Marriott. http://www.visitcardiff.com/ http://www.visitcardiff.com/wheretostay/ Being close the central city is probably preferable. We will be spending most of the lecture time at the University of South Wales Atrium campus near the central railway station. There are a number of hotels around Saint David’s Center, the main downtown shopping mall area. The Atrium campus is just off the mall area. Students in this course may wish to also consider enrolling in HSC516G – World Health Organization which is the week after. The WHO course is held in Geneva. Students could save on airplane tickets by combining the two courses. There are several convenient airplane connections between London and Geneva or between Amsterdam and Geneva. There are daily flights from Amsterdam to Cardiff. There is bus and train service from Heathrow to Cardiff. The bus is the most convenient – about 2 hours. HSC516 Wales 2016 revised 3-30-2018 2 All students must have the approval of the course leader prior to enrolling. No shorts, tank tops, jeans, or other attire for class activities. Check the weather prior to traveling to be sure of bringing appropriate coats and rain gear (just in case). Each participant will need to have access to a mobile/cell phone while in Wales. The instructor must know the number so you can be reached during the week. In addition the instructor must know where you will be staying and how to contact you at that location. These are required by the University. Emergency plans will be available listing contact information, location of health clinics and emergency services. While it is unlikely there will be an emergency, best to be safe. The University provides health insurance for students participating in the course. Be sure to bring the insurance information with you since you will need it if seeking care while in Wales. While family may wish to travel with you to Wales, they cannot participate in any of the scheduled classes unless enrolled as students in the course. There may be some of the cultural events that they can travel separately to and join you at those events. Remember that the University is not liable for anything that may happen to family members or others not enrolled in the course. We travel by public train to many of the cultural events, so traveling at the same time to those should be ok.
