Whittemore Family of Hitchin, in the County of Hertford, England * THE WHITTEMORE FAMILY OF HITCHIN, IN THE COUNTY OF HERTFORD, ENGLAND. I propose to give the Genealogy of the Whitte more Family of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England, or at least so much of it as will show that most, if not all, of those bearing the name in New England, and in other parts of the United States, descended from the Whittemore Family of Hitchin. It will be seen by the following Genealogy that the name there, at different periods, was spelled various- ly, but by tracing it we are enabled to prove it the same family that bears the name of Whittemore in America. The following is a verbatim copy, and the orthog raphy of names, from the Parish Register of Hitchin Vicarage, which was copied and sent by L. Hen- ly, the incumbent of said parish: 1562, October. The Register was examined up to 1653; no more names. In a list of rates in the year 1670, occurs the name of Nathaniel Whittemore. Thomas Whitemore, Senior, the father of our first American ancestor, had brothers William, born in 1540, and Rowland, who died in 1613; and then we have Thomas, son of the foregoing William, married in 1591. THE WHITTEMORE FAMILY IN AMERICA, John Whittemore was born in England, and came over a minor, with his father, Thomas Whittemore, in 1643, or about that time. On the records of Hitchin Parish, county of Herts, England, is an entry, "Feb. nth, 1638, baptized John, son of Thomas Whittemore." This John mar ried first, Mary Uplam. She died June 27th, 1677. Then he married Mary Miller, in Oct. 1677. Their children were Thomas, born in 1664; Joseph, born in 1666; Benjamin, born in 1669; Nathaniel, born in 1673; Joel, born in 1677; Mary, born in 1678; Pela tiah, born in 1680; Amos, born in 1681; Mary, born in 1683; Daniel, born in 1685; Rebecca, born in 1687, and Hanna, born in 1689. Benjamin, father of Rev. Aaron, born in Cam bridge, Mass., Sept. 1st, 1669, married Ester Brooks, Aug. 17th, 1692. He died Sept. 8th, 1734. She died Jan. 16th, 1742. Their children were Mary, born July 12th, 1694; Benjamin, born April 9th, 1696: Nathaniel, born Nov. 23d, 1698; Grace, born Mar. 20th, 1700; Ester, born May 3d, 1707; Aaron, born Dec. 13th, 1711. So it appeaas that our common ancestor is Thom as Whittemore, who came over from England in 1641, and settled in Maiden, Mass. He had several children, among whom was a John, who was Thom as' £&h son, from whom our family descended. This ,v OF THE WHITTEMORE FAMILY. FROM 1562 TO 1881.
