Wood Chip Fungi: Agrocybe putaminum in the San Francisco Bay Area Else C. Vellinga Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, 111 Koshland Hall, Berkeley CA 94720-3102 [email protected] Abstract Agrocybe putaminum was found growing on wood chips in central coastal California; this appears to be the first record for North America. A short description of the species is given. Its habitat plus the characteristics of wood chip denizens are discussed. Wood chips are the fast food of the fungal world. The desir- able wood is exposed, there is a lot of it, and often the supply is replenished regularly. It is an especially good habitat for mush- room species that like it hot because a thick layer of wood chips is warmed relative to the surrounding environment by the activity of bacteria and microscopic fungi (Brown, 2003; Van den Berg and Vellinga, 1998). Thirty years ago wood chips were a rarity, but nowadays they are widely used in landscaping and gardening. A good layer of chips prevents weeds from germinating and taking over, which means less maintenance and lower costs. Chips also diminish evaporation and keep moisture in the soil. Trees and shrubs are often shredded and dumped locally, but there is also long-dis- tance transport of these little tidbits. Barges full of wood mulch cruise the Mississippi River, and trucks carry the mulch from city to city. This fast food sustains a steady stream of wood chip fungi that, as soon as they are established, fruit in large flushes and are suddenly everywhere. In April, Fungimap Committee member Lyn Allison, with the assistance of Susanna Duffy, updated our entire website which had been ailing since 2016. I hope you are enjoying the new look and finding the new content in the form of posts a good way to stay in touch with us. We are also highlighting this new content by linking to it in our monthly eNews. Members are automatically joined up to the eNews, but we are happy to have anyone else join too. The other big change is that we have a new President. Roz Hart has taken over from Tom May who has been in that position since 2005. In this Newsletter, Roz introduces herself and her hopes for Fungimap. I am sure we will all miss Tom in the role, but we are delighted he will still be involved as part of the ID team and be able to focus on working with Pam Catcheside and Sarah Lloyd in finishing the long-awaited second edition of Fungi Down Under. -

MushRumors The Newsletter of the Northwest Mushroomers Association Volume 25, Issue 4 December 2014 After Arid Start, 2014 Mushroom Season Flourishes It All Came Together By Chuck Nafziger It all came together for the 2014 Wild Mushroom Show; an October with the perfect amount of rain for abundant mushrooms, an enthusiastic volunteer base, a Photo by Vince Biciunas great show publicity team, a warm sunny show day, and an increased public interest in foraging. Nadine Lihach, who took care of the admissions, reports that we blew away last year's record attendance by about 140 people. Add to that all the volunteers who put the show together, and we had well over 900 people involved. That's a huge event for our club. Nadine said, "... this was a record year at the entry gate: 862 attendees (includes children). Our previous high was in 2013: 723 attendees. Success is more measured in the happiness index of those attending, and many people stopped by on their way out to thank us for the wonderful show. Kids—and there were many—were especially delighted, and I'm sure there were some future mycophiles and mycologists in Sunday's crowd. The mushroom display A stunning entry display greets visitors arriving at the show. by the door was effective, as always, at luring people in. You could actually see the kids' eyes getting bigger as they surveyed the weird mushrooms, and twice during the day kids ran back to our table to tell us that they had spotted the mushroom fairy. There were many repeat adult visitors, too, often bearing mushrooms for identification. -

Ecologische Atlas Van Paddenstoelen in Drenthe
Hoofdstuk 15 219 Summary volume 1-3 Hoofdstuk 15 Eef Arnolds The Ecological Atlas of fungi in Drenthe presents the results of mycofloristic and myco-ecological research in the period 1800-2014 in Drenthe. This province occupies an area of 2626 km2 in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. The publication concentrates on records in the period 1999-2010, when systematic mapping of fungi was carried out by a group of volunteers, united in the Paddestoelen Werkgroep Drenthe (‘Fungi Studygroup Drenthe’). It is based on over 400,000 records on 2350 species of fungi. This work is divided into three volumes. Volume 1 is the introductory part, including chapters on e.g. regional history of mycology, methodology, presentation of the results, changes in the regional mycoflora, general distribution patterns of fungi, threatened species, mycological hotspots, species newly described from Drenthe in the past and species discovered in Drenthe since 2010. It contains also a general index of species, treated in volumes 1-3, and a complete list of references to literature. Fungal species are treated in an ecological context. Each species has been assigned to a certain ecological group. Each chapter is devoted to an ecological group and its characteristic species. Volume 2 treats the fungi growing in grasslands, heathlands, moorlands, marshy forests and urban environments. Volume 3 treats the fungi growing in forests on mesic to dry soils, as well as fungi from burnt places. The content of each chapter is summarized below. Mycological Notes 16: Growth and variability of Leratiomyces erythrocephalus, the Scarlet Pouch Fungus Jerry Cooper – September 2012 The familiar scarlet pouch fungus can be quite variable in appearance and that has caught out more than one mycologist, including me. Here I describe that variability, and I also predict this fungus will eventually spread around the world on wood chips. Leratiomyces erythrocephalus is one of our most iconic fungi. It was originally named Secotium erythrocephalum from material collected by Étienne Fiacre Louis Raoul near Akaroa. Raoul was surgeon on the expedition ship L'Aube. In 3 years in New Zealand from 1837 to 1840 he collected many plant specimens, mostly from the Akaroa area (during the episode of the French claim for New Zealand). Our fungus was first described in an article authored by Raoul 1844 (Annales des sciences naturelles) where the introduction of the name was attributed to Louis Tulasne. In the same article Tulasne describes the equally iconic Illeodictyon cibarium, also from Akaroa. Raoul/Tulasne describe Secotium erythrocephalum as scarlet capped, with a white stem and 2-spored. Both species were again covered in Raoul's 'Choix De Plantes De La Nouvelle-Zelande' in 1846. Raoul's original description of the fungus is the classical concept of a stalked, secotioid scarlet-capped fungus. Louis Tulasne, along with his brother Charles, described the genus in more detail in 1845 (Annales des sciences naturelles) and in this article he first depicts the nearly gastroid form of the primordial fruitbody. Tulasnes' depiction of the primordial Secotium erythrocephalum. In 1891 Lloyd described what we now consider to be the same taxon, sent to him by H.W Laing from Lyttleton under the name Secotium lutescens, which as the name suggests was described as pale yellow, and without the stipe extending. -

MushRumors The Newsletter of the Northwest Mushroomers Association Volume 27, Issue 4 October - December 2016 A Most Unusual Year For Mushrooms in Northwest Washington, Highlighted by the Annual Fall Exhibit In a year which saw extensive fruitings of a wide range of fall mushrooms in the first week of summer, Photo by Jack Waytz the oddities were only just beginning. As a result of three consecutive years of extended hot, dry periods during the summer months, even after conditions became ideal with copious rains in late September and early October, there was a marked scarcity of many of the usual mycorrhizal suspects in the various woodland habitats of our area. These unusual circumstances underscore the importance of the health and well-being of the host trees in the symbiosis that exists between these trees and their mycorrhizal mushroom partners. There were prolonged and multiple fruitings of several species normally found in our area, but not in the numbers found Over 3 pounds of perfect chanterelles, and two perfect this year. At leat one species Russula xerampelina buttons, also found on July 7th on previously undescribed a local small mountain. -
