England’s U16 boys have scored another big win in their autumn international series by defeating Scotland 17.5-7.5 at Rockliffe Hall Golf Club, Durham They have already beaten Wales 15-5 and will play Ireland early next month. Another win there will see them repeat last year’s record of three victories in these matches. Team manager Nick Over described the boys’ latest result as a solid performance. The highlight of the match was Barclay Brown’s level par 72 in very difficult conditions on the opening day of the 54-hole match. Two England players had 100% winning records in all three games: Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford, Essex), who was in England’s winning team at the Boys’ Home Internationals, and Hugo Kedzlie (Spalding, Lincolnshire). In addition three England players were unbeaten: Barclay Brown (Hallamshire, Yorkshire), Dominic Clemons (Gog Magog, represents Hertfordshire) and Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham, Yorkshire). The other team members, who all contributed to the scoreline, were: James Cooper (Cumberwell Park, Wiltshire), Matthew Freeman (Worksop, Nottinghamshire) Conor Gough (Stoke Park of Berks, Bucks & Oxon), Callum Macfie (Lindrick, Yorkshire) and Tom Stagg (Salisbury & South Wilts, Wiltshire). The match began with individual stroke play matches which England won 7-3. This was followed by foursomes which England won 4-1, and by individual matchplay which England won 6.5- 3.5. Brown, Cooper, Daughtrey, Gilbert, Gough, Kedzlie, Macfie and Stagg will play Ireland at Castletown on October 8 and 9.

17 Yorkshire win 21st English men’s county championship

Yorkshire won the English Men’s County Championship for the 21st time, beating Hampshire 5.5-3.5 in a final day showdown at Sandwell Park in Staffordshire. Although Yorkshire national news national dominate the list of past winners, this is their first victory for nine years and the victory was sweet, especially after the boys’ and women’s teams narrowly lost their county finals. Team captain Darryl Berry, who has previously played in two winning sides, said: “This is great for the team and for all our supporters. It’s been a brilliant team effort, the lads have been great. Yorkshire set up their win with a great foursomes performances, winning 2.5 of the three available points. “That was massive,” said Berry, who sent his top players out in the singles with instructions to get their points as quickly as possible. Steve Robins and Kealan Lowe, playing in the first two games, duly obliged and both won 3/2. Robins was bogey free and five-under when he finished, continuing his fine form of the championship. “I think I’ve had three bogeys in the three days,” he said. “I’ve played well this week and had six wins from six games, so I’m chuffed with that.” Yorkshire will also be pleased to hear that the 23-year-old plans to stay amateur next year. Lowe, the Yorkshire order of merit winner, sank a 4ft putt to close out his match and ensure that the team would win the title. His win gave them a total of 4.5 points and, even if they lost the remaining games, they would draw the match and become champions on a countback of points won. “It’s special to get the winning point, really good,” said Lowe, who won all his singles this week. He was playing at Men’s County Finals for the first time, having previously been in the boys’ version and he said: “This is a bit bigger and scarier with more people watching! But it’s been good.” But all of the team - and their many supporters - wanted an outright win and they were determined to get at least one more point. However, Hampshire got the momentum in the next three games with Billy McKenzie fighting back from three down at the turn to beat Bailey Gill 2 up. He was followed by Ryan Harmer who, having been up most of the way against Yorkshire champion Ben Hutchinson, was pulled back to all square with two to play but managed to win one up. Then, English champion Dan Brown was beaten 3/2 by Hampshire’s Mark Burgess and Yorkshire’s hopes of that extra point were pinned on the close match between Will Whiteoak and Hampshire captain Martin Young. Whiteoak held a one hole advantage for most of the back nine, helped by holing a monster putt for a half on 14. He held on to that slender lead, holing a good 10-footer on the last to finish 1up. “We wanted to win outright and that’s why I put Will at the back,” said Berry. “He’s a pressure man and he brings it home every time.”

The result meant disappointment for Hampshire who have now come away empty-handed from seven County Finals since 2002. Team captain Martin Young said: “I’m disappointed now, but we’re getting closer and I’m proud of what the team has done and we’ve got four young lads who have never played at this level before.” The play-off for third place was won by Warwickshire who beat Cornwall 5.5-3.5. It’s the first time they’ve finished above fourth in their last five visits to County Finals and team captain Stuart Bloxham said: “Hopefully this will be good momentum to take us forward and we’ll get back to County Finals next year, when the qualifier is on home ground. “Today we played some great golf, we had a very good foursomes (winning 2.5-0.5) and we had some fantastic performances from the players in the singles. It was a hard fought and a great win, especially after the losses of the previous two days.

David Youens, 53, from Oxfordshire has played professional rugby and golf, enjoying the competitive nature of top-level of sport. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2005, David struggled with his health, becoming reliant on a wheelchair to support daily activity for a year. During this time David also sought grief counselling to help come to terms with a life-changing condition and the realisation that he would not be able to play elite sport again. During bouts of poor health David was also unable to work for long periods, eventually becoming homeless for a short time. David tried his hand at several different disability sports in an effort to try and rediscover the competitive edge he enjoyed in sport earlier in his life. After stints playing wheelchair tennis, basketball and , David tried out for the Paralympics GB shooting team in 2012, ultimately just missing out on selection. In 2015, after 10 years away from the game, David was encouraged to get back into golf by his family. Despite initially finding it difficult not to be able to play to the same standard as earlier in his life, David quickly picked up where he had left off before his illness. He has regained his form and is aiming to get his handicap into single figures. David said; “I have always taken my sport very seriously, so learning about my diagnosis was a massive shock to the system. It took a long time for me to be confident in my health and ability to get back out on the golf course. I’m really pleased that I have got back involved in the game. Although I’m not playing to the same level as before, I’m enjoying my golf and my handicap is improving all the time. I can play with family and friends and have really competitive games again.” “It is so important that people with conditions like mine can stay involved in activity, and golf is a brilliant way to do that. You can go out and play sport at your own pace without it being to physically demanding if you aren’t feeling well.” Dr David Schley from the MS Society said: “MS is an unpredictable condition but research suggests that exercise can help manage symptoms, such as fatigue, as well as improve the overall health of people with MS. It’s really important to find an exercise that works for you and you’re more likely to stick with it if it’s something you enjoy and find worthwhile. There’s plenty of information and support out there on exercising with MS, including on the MS Society’s website.” Visit www.getintogolf.org to find out about beginner courses, taster lessons and special events at clubs and ranges nationwide.

Lancashire topple BB&O to win English senior crown BB&O

Lancashire are playing so well and he just kept coming back and the new English back at me. It was a fantastic game of golf.” Senior Men’s His win meant Lancashire had 3.5 points and County Champions needed just one more to secure at least a halved – regaining their result and an overall victory, thanks to a slender crown in a thrilling advantage from their previous two matches. They finale at Chipping had to wait a while when BB&O’s Tim Whittaker Sodbury Golf Club in came back from four down after eight to win on Gloucestershire. They beat defending champions the last. 26 Nike Futures concludes BB&O at Frilford Heath

A season that started in early April and culminated at Frilford Heath produced a nail biting climax to 2 of the 3 Orders of Merit. Melan Dhaubhadel (Calcot Park) had secured his top spot in the Under 15s by early August. He played in every event and secured 5 wins, 3 tied 1st places and 4 second places. Well done Melan. Oscar Fuentes (Bearwood Lakes) was second and Harry Oddy (Buckingham) took third place. In the Under 14s, things were very much tighter. Going into the last round either Carl Banner (Stoke Park) or Taylor Paul (Stoke Park) could finish top. Taylor produced a great round of level par 72 on the Blue Course pushing Carl back into a tie for second. As the best 9 from 12 events calculation was made - Taylor pipped Carl by just 2¼ points. A tiny margin over the season. Tom Gregory (Stoke Park) - winner of last year’s U12s OOM - finished 3rd and will be hunting down this Trophy next year. In the Under 12s, all season long it had been a battle of the giants between Tom Stephenson-Green (Studley Wood) and Ben McFadden (Stoke Park). Coming to Frilford Heath it could go either way with a win essential for Tom to win the OOM and with Ben needing to finish 4th. In the end, Tom got his win but Ben finished tied 3rd and took the Trophy by 1½ points. Both Ben and Tom had 6 wins each in the season and in the end the number of podium finishes carried the day for Ben. Simon Mead (Newbury & Crookham) also had a very good season finishing 3rd. Well done to all the competitors and the best of luck with your golfing careers.

38 Surrey beat SURREY Hampshire in annual friendly

The final U13 match of the year was the annual friendly against Hampshire. This year, Chobham played host to the match, which saw a strong Hampshire team take on an enthusiastic Surrey team. The format for this match was 12 a side, four ball better ball match play off scratch, with the players going out in handicap order so they play against other players of a similar ability. With the match split into 3 ways to score, 1 point for winning the front nine, 1 point for winning the back nine and 2points for a winning the match overall the matches can swing backwards and forwards and points are always up for grabs. Surrey had a couple of regulars missing and supplemented the team with 5 current U12’s. Nevertheless, the matches were really close and at the halfway stage it was hard to pick a winner in any of them. Every Surrey pairing won the 9th hole to post valuable points and stand on the 10th hole all square in 3 matches and up in 3 matches. The 9th hole was definitely a turning point in both the matches and the scores. Hampshire pushed hard on the back 9 to win the first match and made a great fight back in the second, however Surrey ended up winning matches 2-5 and losing matches 1 & 6. When the combined scores were added up Surrey had 15.5 points and Hampshire 8.5 points. After play the teams sat in their four balls for a two course meal and the usual speeches by the Captains. Usual with the exception of a fit of giggles by both Captains which amused both teams.

39 John Ling Salver played at Clandon Regis SURREY

The John Ling Salver is a Seniors Club team knockout competition played for by those Clubs knocked out in the first round of the John Ling Trophy. In this year’s Final played at Clandon Regis Golf Club, Shirley Park and Traditions battled it out and what a great match up it proved to be. Traditions took the first of the five matches, then Shirley Park the second to level things up, Traditions then went back in front winning the third but Shirley Park came straight back taking the fourth to again level things up. So it was all on the last match and as they came down the 18th the Traditions pair had the advantage of being 1up and they duly closed the match out taking the hole to finish 2up and secure a fantastic win for the Club. What is even more amazing is that the Traditions team had only 22 Senior players to pick from, unlike other Clubs who have very much larger sections, which only goes to show that whatever the size of the Club anyone can win! Well done to both Finalists. The course was in excellent and this commented on by all the players, so our thanks to Clandon Regis for not only hosting the Final but presenting the course in such pristine condition and looking after all the players with some fine food after play. The presentation of the Salver was made by Clandon President Ian Mitchell. Words by Steve McNeill (Assistant County Secretary)

Russell Berry broke 70 for the first time in five starts this season to win the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at Bristol & Clifton by three shots. The Cheltenham-based Broadway professional shot four-under-par 66 in another field of more than 30 at the Failand venue where a forecast of a foggy morning failed to materialise. Louis Boston (Stockwood Vale), Ian Brown (Newent) and James Hannam (Bath) carded one-

Gloucester S HI RE & SO M ERSET under rounds of 69 as the only other players to better par. Berry has started to play more regularly in county events again since taking up a role at the club on the Gloucestershire/ Worcestershire border and was in top form to secure his first win of the campaign. The 30-year-old, who was long associated with Cleeve Hill, made a steady start playing in the final group and collected five of his six birdies in the final ten holes, three in the final four holes. Hannam also posted three late birdies over the last five holes after opening with a bogey and faltering with a double at the 11th. Brown made three 3’s in the first four holes but was unable to maintain that pace until his closing birdie. Boston followed up his success in the opening event of the season at Knowle with another good showing as four birdies were offset by a trio of bogeys. Ed Goodwin (Cirencester), virtually an ever present in the top five in recent weeks, tied with talented assistants Dan Toogood (Weston-super-Mare) and Will Hobbs (Mendip Spring) for fifth on level par 70. Goodwin now leads the Total Triumph Order of Merit for the first time this year ahead of Ashley Mansell and, in this form, should again be contending for the crown at the end of the season.
