One option would split the ward at Bronson Avenue, a second at Kent Street, and three others at O’Connor Street–despite the consul- tants saying that preserving “geographic communities of interest” was a prime consid- eration in the review. The new ward boundar- ies will come into effect for the next city elections, in fall 2022, and would be in ef- fect until 2030 or 2034. City Council will vote on the con- sultants’ final recommenda- tions this winter. Currently, Somerset Ward stretches from Parlia- ment Hill in the north to the Queensway in the south, and from the Rideau Canal to LRT Line 2. In late 1980s, Beechwood began producing a small booklet containing brief profiles for several dozen of the more significant and well-known individuals buried here. Since then, the cemetery has grown in national significance and importance, first by becoming the home of the National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Forces in 2001, being recognized as a National Historic Site in 2002 and finally by becoming the home of the RCMP National Memorial Cemetery in 2004. -

MARC AUBIN (WARD 12 Rideau-Vanier) If elected, I will advocate for making achieving architectural design excellence a top priority for City of Ottawa projects. AUBIN: I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. Particularly here in ward 12, the historic heart of the Nation's capital, where we have had bestowed upon us a number of landmark buildings from our forebears, we must find ways to press the private sector into a much higher standard of architectural excellence for new projects. This is all the more urgent now as we seem to be in the midst of a barrage of proposed new high rise projects in this ward. I would support the use of design competitions for significant municipal projects. AUBIN: Yes, I believe this is a requirement for significant municipal projects. It is through design competitions that we stimulate the creativity required to come up with the kind of results we need. Attaining carbon-neutral status for all Ottawa buildings by 2030 is a key priority for me. AUBIN: I am strongly supportive of such an initiative. The facts are clear that close to half of our greenhouse gas emissions in our City's climate are generated from our buildings and our buildings are with us for a long period of time. It is here that we have the biggest opportunity to address this environmental challenge. If elected, I will be an advocate for Ottawa's built cultural heritage. -

Director's Update Next week, the District will be hosting a leadership conference entitled Closing the Gap: Creativity, Diversity and Learning, Critical Connections. This day and a half conference will feature Dr. Andy Hargreaves and Dr. Pasi Sahlberg as keynote speakers. Please take a minute to read the Director's Update about the conference and the important work we are doing in this area. Speaker Series - Self-Regulation, March 27th This week we have a fabulous Speaker Series planned. Dr. Stuart Shanker will be speaking about Developing Self-Regulation. Scientists now understand that the better a child can self-regulate the better they can rise to the challenge of mastering ever more complex skills and concepts. Stuart Shanker is a leading expert on developing self-regulation and will explain how it develops in children and what can we do to enhance its development in the early years. January 2021 Notes on Sandy Hill in the new Central and East Downtown Core Secondary Plan (CEDCSP) • In the draft new Official Plan, Sandy Hill is part of the newly designated Downtown Core Transect. Sandy Hill's Secondary Plan (originally conceived in 1979) has been folded into a new Central and East Downtown Core Secondary Plan. • In general, the role of secondary plans is to provide the strategic planning direction to guide future development and redevelopment. While the Official Plan contains policy direction, SPs begin to use more specific geographic and neighbourhood references to guide future development and redevelopment. A further level of direction is found in Community Design Plans (such as the one for Upper Rideau). • The new CEDCSP has amalgamated Sandy Hill, Centretown, and seven additional downtown areas into one document. The Centretown and Escarpment chapters in the Plan are markedly more developed as they have been through a community design process in recent years. • Action Sandy Hill’s (ASH) position is that the Sandy Hill section of the new CEDCSP, in particular compared to its compatriots with community design plans, fails to: o Acknowledge and describe the existing conditions, pressures, and challenges of the plan area (for example, that Sandy Hill is a near-campus neighbourhood to uOttawa, that it has suffered degradation of its built environment); o Articulate the cultural and heritage character and values of the plan area (for example, the entire plan area needs to be assessed for its heritage character–not just
