Welcome to Ecton 2017 and a brand new issue of The Ecton View. I know I should not be surprised but over the festive period you, the Villagers, raised a fantastic amount of money for charity. £456 for The David Cross Fund, after giving all the older people of Ecton a wonderful Christmas Lunch, raised just by signing the Ecton Christmas Card (a record, well done Denise!). The Christmas Festival with a visit from Santa (big thanks to John Buckley and all Santa’s little helpers) raised an impressive £1150 for the Church & Village Hall funds. And to our Carol Singers who raised £115 for the Yemen Appeal. Great example of our community spirit!

Coming up soon you can dance away to ‘No Place Like Home’, take part in a Pancake Race at the Church and join the Ecton Walkers on their first walk (to remove pancakes from the waistline). More details of all these events and more in this months edition.

Even more exciting is the return of Brown Bin collections starting on 10th March!

Finally some of you will be aware that we had a serious incident in the village with a break in on the High Street. Fortunately no one was at home. These things often spur us into action, so a good time to beef up your home security.

Enjoy the magazine and see you next month.

It was a really lovely day. As a result of even more generous donations this year we had a surplus of funds from the sale of Christmas messages and we are able to give £456 to the David Cross Fund which is administered by the Parish Council and is intended to provide outings for older people in the village. As we are all getting older the it would be nice if the fund could last longer.

Ecton Golden Oldies We had a great time recently, enjoying a cinema afternoon. The film was The Golden Years and was laugh out loud funny. With ice cream, popcorn and tea and cakes a good time was had by all. Our next get together is on February 24th when we will be having fish and chips. We need to know numbers by the 21st and we will be in touch.

Christmas Festival - Thanks to All Enormous thanks to everyone who helped, or donated prizes, or gave money and to everyone who came and supported the village Christmas festivities. I hope you will agree it was a lovely weekend with lots going on in the Church and at the Village Hall. The combined events raised £1,150 which has been shared equally between the Church and the Village Hall, a big boost to both coffers. Thank you very much.

Neighbourhood plan Thanks to all of you who responded to the draft Neighbourhood Plan, the responses have been collated and we are now in a position to move on and complete the next phase of work. You will have another chance to comment on the plan at the next stage.

Ecton Parish Council Ecton Parish Council’s next meeting will be Tuesday 21st March at 7.30pm. You can obtain a full copy of the latest Parish Council Minutes. Email: [email protected] Carol Singing Thank you to everyone who turned out to sing carols in the village on 16th December. We had a warm welcome in The Three Horse Shoes and at The Hall and together with a collection at Songs of Praise we raised a total of £115.45 for the Yemen appeal.

There was a good turnout and enthusiastic singing. We are sorry the timing was a bit adrift and some people were not able to join us. We promise to be more careful about this next year. We look forward to doing something similar next year.

I love the delicate flowers snowdrops produce at this time of year and look forward to them appearing, as they surely herald the coming of spring, along with winter aconites and early varieties of daffodil. Because snowdrops often flower around the beginning of February they are sometimes called Candlemas Bells, as the feast of Candlemas falls on 2ⁿd February. Candlemas marks the midpoint of winter, halfway between the shortest day and the spring equinox. In pre-Christian times, the day was known as the 'Feast of Lights' and celebrated the increased strength of the sun as winter gave way to spring. The weather for the rest of the winter is also said to be forecast by what happens on Candlemas Day: If Candlemas Day be fair and bright Winter will have another fight. If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain, Winter won't come again. In the Christian traditional the festival commemorates the ritual purification of Mary, forty days after the birth of Jesus. On this day, Jesus was presented in the Temple by Mary and Joseph who, having gone to the Temple to give thanks for their son, are met by Anna and Simeon. The prophet Simeon takes the baby Jesus in his arms and calls him a Light to the World (Luke 2:22-38). Today candles are lit in church, to remind us that Jesus came to be a light to guide us in the darkness of the world and it used to be tradition that all the church’s candles for the coming year would be blessed at Candlemas. Along with the snowdrops, heralding the lighter nights, candles remind us that the light will always overcome the darkness, something to hold onto as, at Candlemas, we look back at Christmas and forward to Easter, the church crib scenes are put away and the countdown to Lent begins.

Ecton Walks – 1 March 2017 A number of people have expressed an interest in joining a regular walking group to explore the local footpaths and byways. As I am retiring in a few weeks I am happy to organise these walks. There are a number of people who love walking but are not dog lovers so we are proposing to run the first walks as ‘dog free’ but depending on the interest then we will have dog inclusive walks. Wednesdays appear to be the best days and we’ll probably aim for two walks in a month. More details of schedules in next month’s magazine. The walks will begin in April (after I retire) but I’m proposing a trial walk on Wednesday 1st March. We’ll aim for 3-5 miles initially. (Circular route down to the river, along to Earl’s Barton and back past South Lodge). - Nigel Bond

This must have been very low as it immediately set-off the Roof Alarm of The Church and shortly after, was seen to fly-off out of the village. Hopefully this was a one-off incident.

For general information, some of the Key Points of the Regulations concerning Drones are as follows :- • An unmanned Drone must never be flown beyond the normal ‘unaided’ line of sight of the person operating it - generally 500m horizontally or 122m vertically. • A Drone fitted with a camera must NOT be flown :- 1) Over or within 150m of any congested area, ie housing. 2) Over or within 150m of an organised open-air assembly of more than 1000 persons. 3) Within 50 m of any vessel, vehicle or structure which is not under the control of the person in charge of the Drone. 4) Within 50m of any person except during take-off or landing and within 30m of any person except the person in charge of the Drone.

PLEASE BE VIGILANT AND DO PLEASE REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS DRONE ACTIVITY IN ECTON VILLAGE TO THE POLICE ON 101, AND IF NEAR THE CHURCH ALSO CONTACT EITHER OF THE CHURCHWARDENS. (Linda Richards 405888 or Joy Bond 948040)

Robert Burns was born in a house built by his father in January 1759 Being the eldest of seven children for him was just fine From tenant farming parents he was born His father worked from dusk to dawn

Here he lived until 1766 and moved to Mount Oliphant farm at the age of seven The new 70 acre farm in Alloway was really no heaven He grew up in poverty and hardship and was taught reading and writing by his dad A good education was something he never had taught him and his brother Maths Latin and French Being taken away from his studies to do manual labour must have been a terrible wrench His first poem was inspired by Nelly who helped on the farm ‘O Once I Lov’d a Bonnie Lass’ was inspired by her charm In 1775 a tutor called Kirkoswald helped him finish his education There he met Peggy Thompson much to his jubilation To Peggy he wrote ‘Now Westlin Winds’ and I Dream’d I Lay’ At that time they didn’t make him rich is all I will say!

1777 was when the farm at Lochlea became their new place And taking up country dancing Robert nearly fell out of grace The Tarlolton Bachelors Club was then started But in 1974 with his father they parted The family were integrated within the community Which gave the family a bit of continuity Robert at this time met Alison Begbie to whom he proposed But she rejected him even though four songs he composed In 1781 Burns wanted to be a flax dresser and Irvine was where he was bound But during the New Year’s celebrations there the shop caught fire and was burnt to the ground Burns went back home to Lochlea farm Hoping that he would now be safe from harm It was here he met Captain Who encouraged him to be a poet which stopped him feeling down!

He continued to write his poems and songs and began to make a commonplace book But the death of his father meant once again off they took The farm at Mossgiel was where they worked for the next four years It was a real struggle and they shed many tears It was here he met on a drying green As she asked everyone if her escaped dog they had seen They again met at a local dance She sent Robert into such a trance

Her father wasn’t keen on them getting wed But they often shared the same bed Nine children they had together And in 1788 they tied the knot forever

‘The Slaves Lament’ was written regarding his work in Jamaica He also loved another - Mary Campbell- until in 1786 typhus decided to take her ‘Highland Mary’ and To Mary in Heaven’ were dedicated in her name

1786 was when Robert published ‘Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect’ People started to see that he was such a great intellect The Melodies of Scotland brought him even more fame His lyrical songs were never the same Scottish folk melodies were his love He really did have a gift from above. was one of his best A Red Red Rose and Major Graham were some of the rest

Alas fame came too late in life and at 37 his heart simply gave out To this day he is so highly regarded there is no doubt Buried with his wife Jean in St Michaels church yard There is no doubt Robert certainly had the gift of the bard!

For some this can mean cosy nights in and walks in the countryside, but there are various risks that winter weather poses, and now’s the time to plan ahead to make sure you’re prepared. New research by the Met Office found that a quarter of UK adults (23%) don’t do anything at all to prepare for the weather changes and freezing temperatures, leaving millions of people vulnerable to accidents, and damage to their property and possessions. They found that 76% of people didn’t check their pipes are insulated (76%), whilst 66% did not have their boiler checked ahead of winter. And when it comes to travel, just 38% of people topped up the anti-freeze in their car. And while it happens every year, more than nine out of ten adults (91%) underestimate just how cold British winters can be with the average minimum temperature in the UK in January being a chilly one degree Celsius. This may explain why 22% of adults confess to being inadequately dressed for the weather at least once a week during the winter months. Cold temperatures can be harmful to your health and can lead to an increase in accidents. Four in ten UK adults (40%) have had a winter-related accident which has caused injury. Most of those have injured themselves falling over during the winter but some have been blown over or hit by flying objects in high winds. Winter can be a lonely and dangerous time for many – particularly those who are elderly or vulnerable. Just over a quarter (26%) of Brits already set a good example by checking in on older or vulnerable neighbours during winter, with others offering to clear paths or driveways in snowy conditions. Younger people are far less likely to check on elderly neighbours – just 13% of 18-24 year olds do, compared to 33% of those aged 55-64.

The Get Ready for Winter campaign aims to help raise awareness of the dangers posed by Puzzle Solution - February winter weather and provide tips and advice on how to minimise its impact. The campaign is run and implemented by the Met Office on behalf of a number of Government Departments with support from charities and other community based organisation.

To find out more about how to prepare for winter, including handy tips, head to the Met Office’s Get Ready for Winter website: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/get-ready-for-winter.
