This is her own story, in her own words. What else could you need to know8221 8212Elvis Costello 160 8220From the jump, A Woman Like Me is riveting. Bettye LaVette's story grips you and, like her voice, doesn't let go.8221 8212Paul Shaffer 8220A Woman Like Me is a candid, offbeat, and gloriously unapologetic memoir by one of the greatest soul singers of all time8230. This is narrative writing at its best. LaVette8217s charismatic style of performance is consistent with her bold and engaging personality on the page there8217s never a dull moment here.8221 8211Kristin Rawls, The Christian Science Monitor 160 160 82208216Love, Reign o8217er Me8217 is one of the best songs I8217ve written. I never thought anyone could challenge the way Roger Daltrey took the vocals to such a high level of anguish, longing, and epiphany, but Bettye did it. She is a voice from the wilderness. How did we miss her for so long A Woman Like Me goes some of the way to explain. Now she is here, an extraordinary discovery in a blues voice. We must hang on to her tightly.8221 8212Pete Townshend 160 8220Bettye makes no apologies.8221 8212Jon Bon Jovi 160 8220LaVette has had quite the colorful life, and she spares no detail or hair-raising experience in A Woman Like Me.8221 8212Kia Makarechi, The Huffington Post 160 8220Absolutely engrossing8230 a wild ride8230 Despite the numerous setbacks, the unfilled promises from producers8212something she terms 'buzzard luck'8212LaVette is a survivor and no obstacles is too big for her to surmount. Her honesty is astonishing and if half of what she relates is true then her journey is no less painful than Billie Holiday8217s or Bessie Smith8217s8230. What is most intriguing about her book is the way she and Ritz mix humor and wit, a kind of comic relief to the moments of sorrow and setback8230. Longtime residents of Harlem, Chicago, LA, and Detroit will relish those scenes so memorably evoked by LaVette as she recalls the clubs, incidents, and the gaggle of lovers and mentors8230. A woman like Bettye LaVette is like no other.8221 8212Herb Boyd, The Network Journal 8220A dizzying, careening, nonstop roller coaster ride of an autobiography8230.An unflinching and uncompromising look at a life lived across the tracks from fame, where the brass ring was always within view but never within her grasp.8221160 8211Ben Edmonds, Detroit Free Press 8220LaVette8217s autobiography reads like an RB song only she could perform8212soulful and honest8230.Her quest serves as one of the most authentic inside looks at the American music industry, and LaVette pulls no punches8230LaVette8217s tale is a treat.8221160 8211Publishers Weekly 8220A tale of inspiration, frustration and promises deferred...studded with anecdotes about a life making music alongside some of the biggest names in Detroit.8221 8211Tris McCall, The New Jersey Star-Ledger 8220Powerful.8221160 8211The Village Voice 8220Hilarious and harrowing 8230 the details of her tale prove so crazed, quotable and laugh-out-loud funny, I found myself dog-earing many more pages in her book than I left pristine. At 66, LaVette has lost none of the muscularity of her instrument. Neither has she lost her trim figure. Her bad-ass spirit, evident on every page, remains even more firmly intact. The most powerful aspect of her story comes in the way she chooses to tell it with a triumphant cackle.8221160 8211Jim Farber, New York Daily News 8220The life story of this soul singer8212a real survivor, now 668212is destined for the big screen8230LaVette8217s candid story is also a window into the early years of Motown and the Detroit music scene. 8211Billy Heller, New York Post 8220LaVette8217s book is red hot.8221 8211Steve Holsey, Michigan Chronicle 8220Bettye LaVette8217s autobiography, A Woman Like Me, proves she8217s as amazing a storyteller as she is a singer.8221 8211Benjamin Boles, Now 8220LaVette tells it like it is8230. LaVette sings as straightforwardly as she writes, probably because she is from no-nonsense Detroit. Much of the start of her memoir, cowritten with David Ritz, details the Detroit blues scene. There are beautiful cameo portraits of Aretha Franklin, Solomon Burke and Little Esther Phillips along the way.8221 8211Charles R. Cross, The Seattle Times 8220LaVette is a rhythm and blues survivor of the highest order, someone whose run of 8216buzzard luck8217 as she calls it would have stomped down almost anyone else alive. To read her unrelenting story with every single nitty gritty detail included is to understand what long odds the music business has always been, and also see the high and low points in high-def detail like very few biographies have captured. LaVette is long past shame over some of her escapades, and lucky for us she and co-writer David Ritz capture the arduous journey dead-on, never pulling out the make-up and lip gloss to try and sugarcoat the truth.8221 8211Bill Bentley, The Motion Report 8220Besides being remarkably frank, A Woman Like Me is a very funny book, rife with one laugh after another.8221 8211Lee Hildebrand, San Francisco Chronicle About the Author Bettye LaVette born Betty Jo Haskins, January 29, 1946 is an American rhythm-and-blues singer who made her first record at sixteen but achieved only intermittent fame until 2003 and her album A Woman Like Me. Her eclectic musical style combines elements of soul, blues, rock and roll, funk, gospel, and country music. Her live performances consistently receive rave reviews, and her albums The Scene of the Crime and Interpretations The British Rock Songbook have been nominated for Grammy Awards. She has been a guest on major national radio and television programs. LaVette lives in New Jersey with her husband, Kevin Kiley, and their three cats, Otis, Smokey, and Jeremy. David Ritz has been described by The New York Times as ldquothe first-call celebrity collaborator.rdquo He has worked with everyone from Ray Charles to Don Rickles. - Title: A Woman Like Me - Author: David Ritz, Bettye LaVette - Released: 2012-09-27 - Language: - Pages: 272 - ISBN: 039915938X - ISBN13: 978-0399159381 - ASIN: 039915938X Download PDF A Woman Like Me, Free Download A Woman Like Me Books [E-BOOK] A Woman Like Me Full eBook, A Woman Like Me Book Download, Download Online A Woman Like Me Book, Read Online A Woman Like Me Book, A Woman Like Me Books Online, Read A Woman Like Me Ebook Download, Download PDF A Woman Like Me Free Online, A Woman Like Me Popular Download, Free Download A Woman Like Me Books [E-BOOK] A Woman Like Me Full eBook, book pdf A Woman Like Me, Read A Woman Like Me Books Online Free, Read Best Book Online A Woman Like Me, Read A Woman Like Me Book Free, Free Download A Woman Like Me Full Popular David Ritz, Bettye LaVette, online pdf A Woman Like Me, pdf free download A Woman Like Me, Read A Woman Like Me Book Free, Download A Woman Like Me PDF, A Woman Like Me by David Ritz, Bettye LaVette Download,.

  • 1 "Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music S
"Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.

The trip’s dramatic impact was evident on their music and is credited for the acceptance of meditation in the West today. Paul McCartney said his Transcendental Meditation practice has helped him personally over the past 40 years. “In moments of madness, it has helped me find moments of serenity,” Paul said. He added that he supports the work of the David Lynch Foundation to bring the technique to one million children for the same reason.

  • LISTENING to DRAG: MUSIC, PERFORMANCE and the CONSTRUCTION of OPPOSITIONAL CULTURE DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillmen
LISTENING TO DRAG: MUSIC, PERFORMANCE AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF OPPOSITIONAL CULTURE DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy In the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Kaminski, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Vincent Roscigno, Advisor Professor Verta Taylor _________________________ Advisor Professor Nella Van Dyke Sociology Graduate Program ABSTRACT This study examines how music is utilized in drag performances to create an oppositional culture that challenges dominant structures of gender and sexuality. I situate this analysis in literature on the role of music and other cultural resources in the mobilization of social movement protest. Drawing from multiple sources of data, I demonstrate that drag queen performers make use of popular songs to build solidarity, evoke a sense of injustice, and enhance feelings of agency among audience members – three dimensions of cognition that constitute a collective action framework, conducive to social protest. The analysis is based on observations of drag performances; content analysis of the lyrics of drag songs; intensive interviews with drag queens at the 801 Cabaret in Key West, Florida; focus groups with audience members who attended the shows at the 801 Cabaret; and interviews with drag queen informants in Columbus, Ohio. I demonstrate how drag performers use music to construct new alliances and understandings of gender and sexuality among gay and heterosexual members of the audience. The data illustrate that drag performers strategically select songs to evoke an array of emotions among audience members. First are songs that utilize sympathy, sorrow, and humor to build solidarity.
