Freedom to Read

My guilty pleasure television show is Say Yes to the Dress (Kleinfeld, Atlanta, UK, Canada, Ireland – I enjoy them all). Nothing washes the day away like watching a bride navigate dress-buying landmines with an outspoken “entourage” and a lifetime of princess dreams hanging in the balance. Ballgown, A-line, fit-and-flair, sheath, modest, plunging, bling, understated, lace, empire, corset bodice, cap sleeves, no sleeves… the possibilities are endless and the cheap drama unfolds as fast as a bridezilla can open her parents’ wallets. Aside from the staggering sums paid by some for wedding dresses, I am continually shocked by their final choices. They are oftentimes atrocious, although I think UK brides make better choices overall.

I was reminded of the show and how it highlights our extraordinary, glorious variety of tastes when my daughter gave me a necklace for Christmas that reads, “A Truly Great Library Has Something to Offend Everyone.” I just love that. The phrase speaks to the role of librarians in contesting all encroachments against the freedom to read by individuals or groups that seek to impose their own moral, political, or aesthetic views. It reminds me that librarians must strive to develop collections that reflect the diverse views, perspectives, and tastes represented in our communities.

The American Library Association’s Freedom to Read statement puts it best when it declares that it is in the public’s interest for librarians “to make available the widest diversity of views and expressions, including those that are unorthodox, unpopular, or considered dangerous by the majority.” It goes on to say that when it comes to people’s reading matter and to writers’ artistic expression, “there is no place in our society for efforts to coerce the tastes of others.”

So I hope you’ve encountered a book, magazine, or book at the Library that makes you roll your eyes or shake your head. By offering collections that enrich quality and diversity of thought, libraries are guarding “rights of library users to read, seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by the First Amendment.” Like the wedding consultant who will work to satisfy the dreams of a bride over those of an entourage, or of an overbearing mother, a good librarian will defend your right to read what you like. We have our own touch of “zilla” when it comes to the freedom to read, and there’s no guilt about it! 12
