Dear Fellow Officers,

Welcome to another year in the life of Boys’ Brigade within East Antrim. I trust you all were able to manage some quality time with family during the summer months and you are now refreshed to start working to reach boys and young men for our saviour.

The executive were greatly encouraged by the numbers attending the rewarding volunteer dinner in April and are busy discussing the changes you wanted to happen.

A big thank you to all companies and individuals who sponsored me on my 35 mile walk from Rathmore to Newport. I am delighted to say I made it home and we raised over £10,000 leaving HQ debt free on the new complex.

Serious consideration must be made within each council section to bring forward new names for the officer bearers in 2 years time. I trust you all give these post prayerful consideration.

This year the Conference / Council in Edinburgh will be updated on progress of last year’s NI motion. Our President, Mr David Bevins has written to all Captains with an update. This year there is a motion to change “boys” to “young people” in Brigade regulations and my view is we should oppose this.

The 2018/19 session has again a selection of events both sporting and social; I encourage officers to attend and to encourage the boys to enter the competitions.

The Battalion will attempt to communicate with officers via Whatsapp this session and the executive have already commenced doing so with some success.

Please remember we still hold two meeting per session and you can find the dates in another part of this handbook.

The website continues to be our main communication tool. Please make sure you keep up to date by visiting the site regularly and if you are involved with competitions or events please email a report to [email protected] so that the site is kept up to date.

I would like to express my appreciation to all officers who worked at District, Company and Battalion level throughout the last session.

I also wish to inform you that I have been appointed to the Boys’ Brigade UK Executive and I look forward to being able to attend meetings at Felden soon.

So at the start of a new session can I encourage you to get involved more with your Company.

Give that little bit extra and collectively we can achieve our object of Advancing Christ's Kingdom among boys.

God bless you in this new session.

Yours sincerely

Drew Buchanan MBE Battalion President.

THE ANNUAL EXECUTIVE REPORT 2017 -2018

As we come to the end of another season of BB we must give thanks to Our Lord and Saviour for all the goodness that He has bestowed upon us in East Antrim Battalion during this season.

The Executive would like to express thanks to all the Officers, Leaders and Helpers who work hard each and every week within the Battalion, the Executive appreciates the loyalty and work that is carried out with the aim of the Boys’ Brigade, the Advancement of Christ’s Kingdom amongst boys, being the centre of this work.

The Executive would also like to express thanks to all those involved in duties at NID level. A special thank you goes to all the Officers who work tirelessly with the young men at Queen’s Badge level, Duke of Edinburgh level and at KGVI levels.

The Executive would also like to express thanks and appreciation to all those Officers, Leaders and Helpers who for one reason or another are standing down this session. The Executive wish God’s Blessing in whatever they do. Without Officers Leaders and Helpers, Companies have difficulty operating. The Executive would also like to thank those who will be continuing in new roles come September.

The Executive would also like to thank Dr. John Cathcart the Battalion Training Officer for organising the Grade 111 Leadership course and would also like to thank those in 1st Whitehead and 1st Ballyclare who held these two courses.

On Sunday 1st October 2017 we held our Annual Battalion Church Parade and Officers Dedication Service in the town of Ballyclare. The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Council along with other Councillors attended the Church Service.

We were again blessed with wonderful weather and an attendance of 16 out of 22 Companies being represented, it was very rewarding to witness Ballyclare Presbyterian Church, Ballyclare filled with boys and Officers from all over the East Antrim area. There were over 400 members on parade, a truly wonderful sight. Congratulations to 1st Larne and 1st Raloo Junior Sections who were jointly awarded the Fitzell Trophy and 1st Carrickfergus Company who were awarded the McCune Trophy. Congratulations also to 1st Ballynure and 1st Raloo who were the first recipients of the Sarah Gardner Trophies.

The Executive were deeply saddened at the sudden loss of one of our esteemed Vice President’s, Mr Ken Hogg who passed away during this session. Sympathies were expressed to his family circle. At his funeral, there was a large contingent of both past and present members. His passing will be greatly missed not only within our Battalion but also the wider Boys’ Brigade circle.

During the year there have been many competitions and events across all sections. All these events and competitions could not be held if it were not for the dedication of all the Officers who arrange each event.

Thank you to everyone.

Well done to all the boys within all Sections who took part and congratulations to all the winners. It would be unfair to single any particular Company out. However, a “Special” mention must go to 5th Carrickfergus Company who represented the Battalion at the UK National 5-aside Competition in Derby.

As like last year, a Christian Education examination was held; it is disappointing that only a small number of Companies within the Battalion participate in this examination.

6

As boys from East Antrim Battalion prepare to attend a Queen’s Badge presentation evening on 18th May 2018, at which a number of young men from the East Antrim Battalion will be presented with their Queen’s Badges the Executive hope and pray that these young men will continue to remain within Boys’ Brigade.

The Executive would like to wish anyone attending holiday or camp weekends a safe and rewarding experience, and hope that the aim of the Boys’ Brigade will be at the heart of each and every event.

We hope and pray that all Officers and Boys have a refreshing break from Boys’ Brigade during the summer and pray that each and everyone will return renewed and ready for the new session in September 2018.

I present this report on behalf of the Battalion Executive.

The Battalion Executive consists of the following members: 1. Battalion President and chair of Executive – 2. Vice Presidents (chair of section councils) as elected by each section to represent and feedback from Council meetings; Company Section – Junior Section – Anchor Boys 3. Secretary – 4. Treasurer, to administer the finances of the Battalion including dues, expenses and sources of income/funding – 5. Chaplain – 6. Training Officer, representing the training committee dealing with all aspects of training within the Battalion – 7. District Executive Representative – 8. Under 26 representatives 9. One elected representative from each section; Company Section – Junior Section – Anchor Boys

All its members are elected at each Council meeting or the AGM.

Whilst each section council will deal with their own affairs, i.e. competitions, sports, training etc, the Executive serves as a forum to facilitate discussion of issues common to all sections, control finance, offer assistance and guidance, and represent local concerns at regional and district levels.

To assist the Executive as they seek to be of assistance to Companies of the Battalion, a series of informal visitations are arranged to facilitate an opportunity to meet with individual companies and their officers. This is not an inspection, but an opportunity to meet, learn and share together, with input available from the visitors (with prior arrangement!). As the visit is informal there is no feedback as such, general comments will be shared and the visit noted at the next Executive meeting.

The Executive is yours, elected by you, seeking to serve you. If you have any queries with regard to the Battalion, or problems within your Company, contact the secretary in confidence for assistance.
