Unstoppable: We never give up What makes us different? We have a reputation as a provider of excellent services leading to positive outcomes for people and the communities we work with. Our organisation is assessed using a national framework “Mind Quality Mark” which covers areas that includes Leadership, Resource, Values, and Services. We thrive on being an organisation that has people with experience of mental health needs throughout our workforce, from volunteers, staff and members of the board ensuring that service users voices are heard throughout our work. Strength and Quality We benefit from both a local, countywide, and national perspective and approach. When we are developing and designing new services, we work not from scratch, but with the resource of shared experiences and learning from across the network. The vast knowledge available is mixed with local expertise and innovation. Commissioners, funders and those using our services all have the peace of mind provided by our bespoke Mind Quality Management framework. We take part in an annual quality assurance process as part of our affiliation agreement with Mind. The framework embeds the Charity Commission’s Hallmarks of an Effective Charity. This means we can be confident that our Local Mind is a well run, well governed and capable organisation, going beyond its basic obligations as a charity. Unique and effective Mind has been working in Northamptonshire since 1978 and are making a real difference to the lives of people living with mental health issues. Our values are at the heart of everything we do. We put people first, and this leads to positive outcomes. We are proud that the people who benefit from our services are embedded in our organisations, involved in service design and delivery and in our governance. Our focus is on resilience and recovery, meeting the unique needs of each individual. The network Our strong relationship between our local Mind, the other local Minds in Northamptonshire, and Mind nationally. The 2018-21 national strategy ‘Building on Change’ commits the network to deliver mores services, provide more information and help improve the wellbeing of our communities. This strategic work created Network Futures; a five-year plan to enable growth, increase sustainability and build a stronger federation. This was jointly developed by local Minds with a vision that by 2021 we will be the most efficient and effective federated network we can be, with a partnership approach to everything that we do, reaching more people with mental health problems than ever before. Diversity and disability The Mind network is strongly committed to supporting the diversity of staff and volunteers through equal opportunity policies and practice. Wellingborough Mind encourages applications from those who consider themselves disabled, particularly those who have experience of mental distress. Over 80% of our workforce either have lived experience or support someone with mental health problems. One of our strategic focuses is to look at how we support and encourage people from black, minority, and ethnic (BME) communities to access mental health services, we are working with Northamptonshire Health Foundation Trust on the Moving Ahead project with a focus on improving services for people from BME backgrounds. Service Overview Advice and Information Our weekly advice and information service continues to grow and we were able to offer support to 179 appointments this year. The service is open to the general public and offers information both about our service and other mental health services in the area. We provide a non- judgemental listening ear and a safe space where someone can talk and be offered support to best suit their needs. We have clients that utilise this service for a safe space and do not go on to use any of our other services and we also have clients that accessed our advice and information service and have went on to have counselling, attend our wellbeing courses, art group, peer support, mental health navigator support and 1:1 support. We also signpost to a more specialist area of their concern i.e. for finances, housing via community law, citizen’s advice bureau, specialist trauma support. The service has received positive feedback in relation to our advice and information service and have offered occasional appointments outside of the aforementioned day and times to better suit someone accessing support. Our staff and volunteers provide the support and we continue to offer further development opportunities for both to further develop their skills, thus improving and being of benefit to mind and everyone accessing our services for support. We currently have a volunteer that has supported and worked within our advice and information service and has progressed and is now a volunteer counsellor. Our volunteer receptionist has also moved onto support clients in our advice and information service. We ask clients attending the advice and information service for feedback on their experience, we also allow them to comment and suggest improvements to this service. Below is a summary of the feedback we gained from clients: 89 % of clients who attended this service felt better after their session.

88% of clients would recommend this service to others.

Really relaxed atmosphere and made me feel welcome. Felt comfortable to talk about what my issues are and how I felt for what has happened to me.” Advice and Information Service Art Group Our Art group continues to provide a quiet environment for people to feel relaxed, connected and express their creative side. As well as a space for being creative the group helps to reduce isolation faced by people living with long term conditions. We use some of the artwork from this group to decorate our resource centre and make it a more welcoming environment for everyone.

Bring and Share Lunch Club Alongside our peer support groups we host a “Bring and Share” lunch on the first Wednesday of every month. The group continues to be successful with more people enjoying this service each month and also has professionals attending. This year the “Locality Connectors” and “Together” have brought service users along with them in the hope that they feel comfortable accessing any of our services that they may want to access in the future here at Wellingborough Mind. There is always a warm atmosphere and conversations throughout the room, both volunteers and service users have brought in homemade dishes made with home grown foods that have been appreciated and enjoyed by all.

Counselling Our counselling service continues to offer a safe confidential space, where our clients can process and work through any problems, difficulties, bereavement or trauma that they wish to and are met with a genuine care, non-judgemental, open and congruent counsellor. We offer up to 20 sessions of client led, person centered counselling and all of our counsellors have regular supervision, in line with BACP recommendations.

Our counselling service continues to expand with a further five placement counsellors having started in January 2019. We have completed 70 counselling assessments this year and have provided 534 (including assessments) counselling sessions in total.

Our counselling referrals continue to increase with referrals coming from Community Mental Health Teams, GP’s surgeries, Crisis Cafes, Home Start, Mental health navigators, IAPT wellbeing teams, locality connectors and the probation service as well as other NHS and charitable organisations.

We have supported clients with issues including but not exhaustive of stress, depression, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety, health anxiety, PTSD, domestic abuse. childhood trauma, relationship difficulties, problems at work and self-esteem issues.

We would like to give special thanks to our long standing counsellors that have moved onto new ventures, whilst wishing them continued success. We would also like to thank all of our volunteer counsellors and every member of the team, with whom it would not be possible to have the positive feedback that we have of our counselling service.

Feedback In order to improve and monitor the effectiveness of our counselling service we ask clients to complete our service evaluation form. Feedback given demonstrates that clients felt counselling was a good way to address their issues and that they would recommend it to friends and relatives.

100 % of clients who completed their counselling stated that they strongly agreed that counselling helped them to understand their situation and feelings

83 % of clients agreed they were more able to cope since having counselling

91 % of clients agreed that they felt more positive after receiving counselling

100 % of clients agreed that they would recommend counselling to others.

Of those clients who completed the clinical monitoring at the end of their counselling 81% showed an improvement in their wellbeing.

Peer Support (Open Mind)

Open Mind is a valuable service offering a relaxed safe space enabling individuals to be in an environment where understanding and support of each other is a priority. Following feedback from our members this service we will continue to have a facilitator within the group, we will also keep the service informal with the regular panned activities organized throughout the year. This service offers a good opportunity to reduce social isolation and more than 30 people attending each month.

Men’s Shed Our Men’s Shed project is designed with the aim of offering the opportunity for men to come together to work on various hobbies and pastimes with the aim to fill a void in their lives after they retire, find themselves in a period of

unemployment, or unable to work. 2017/18 Counselling feedback The Men’s Shed is self funding and generates its income through repairing and recycling bicycles which are donated from the community and the local council through Wellingborough Norse, these are then sold through our Charity Shop. Although this is a small group supporting a few individuals, the shedders report the project has a positive effect on their mental health as the project provides work based learning, and also helps the local environment by reducing landfill.

Mental Health Navigator The Mental Health Navigator service is a partnership project between Wellingborough Mind, Mind, Northampton & District Mind, and Northamptonshire Health Foundation Trust. The service operates across Northamptonshire offering people who are experiencing difficulties with their emotional wellbeing the opportunity to find out about local services across the county which would be of interest for their needs. Wellingborough Mind covers the districts of Wellingborough and East Northants, and last year we worked with over 140 people across are area.

The project has enabled us to develop closer links with NHS mental health services and our Navigators attend professional meetings with primary and secondary mental health workers. Our navigators are continuing to promote the services across the county and over the last year they have held multiple drop in sessions at the job centre and local schools, this has seen an increase in the number of referrals into the service.

This is our sixth year running the service and it continues to offer a valuable signposting service to anyone with poor mental health. Navigators help and support individuals during an often difficult period in their life, to find suitable support with a plan tailored to their individual needs. Navigators have continued their professional development through attending drug and alcohol training, personality disorder and suicide awareness training. The service is designed to work with an individual over 6 sessions, helping the individual find the motivation to access the support they need as well as a safe space in which to talk. Evidence shows that being heard is the one thing all clients value from the service. We have listed some positive feedback from individuals who have accessed the service below: ‘I felt at ease and able to express many feelings that have been hidden away’ ‘I cannot say enough about how well I have been supported by Mind and the Navigator in particular’

‘It has really given me a sense of purpose, our sessions allowed me to focus productivity in all situations. I am beginning to have hope. Great service’ Mental Health Navigator feedback I

Wellbeing Courses We have been delivering wellbeing courses throughout the last year, comprising of three Stress Management, two Anger Management, one Depression Management and one Anxiety Management course in 2018. We delivered these courses in Wellingborough in partnership with the Mental Health Northants Collaborative. The collaboration brings together Mental Health providers and works towards the delivery of comparable Wellbeing Courses across Northamptonshire through a range of providers. Our wellbeing courses have continued to thrive with the numbers attending growing with each course. Our wellbeing courses run over 6 weeks and are delivered by our facilitators to incorporate the needs of the group. Those who attended continued to engage well and support one another both whilst the course was being delivered and some afterwards where friendships have been made. The feedback from the course participants has been extremely positive with many individuals going onto complete other relevant courses to improve and support their emotional wellbeing. Course Feedback Feedback from course attendees showed that 93% of those who attended thought the course content was ‘excellent’ or ‘good’. We also asked those accessing our courses whether they thought they had benefitted from this service, from feedback taken 100% of those attending thought that they had benefitted from this service. The courses continue to evolve taking into account service user feedback which included a request for improvements to the note sheets for the service user handouts. Alongside feedback we also measure individual wellbeing scores before and after the course, from the data taken during the first quarter of 2019 99% of clients had an increase in their wellbeing score after attending a course.

“Very well run course, well organised, nothing too heavy each week, good feedback from other course members, in general very good. Useful paperwork handouts each week, worked well.”

“Very Open Honest Knowledgeable. Helped me understand myself more and other people”

“The course was really educational, Martin, Pauline & Gemma were very good teaching the course, If I had the chance I would do it again.”

Wellbeing Course feedback Strategy 2016-2021

Wellingborough Minds board of trustees is made up of a group of people passionate about mental health. We recruit our trustees for their individual skills, expertise and knowledge. Our governing board reviews and shapes the work that is carried out to reach towards the following four goals: > Building stronger partnerships > Financial sustainability > Grow and develop our ability to raise funds > Review, develop, and implement new ways of working

Our strategy review for 2018 has highlighted the ways in which we are reaching these goals. We have pushed for a greater working partnership with Northamptonshire Health Foundation Trust (NHFT), leading to joint training sessions with NHS staff on Suicide, Self Harm, and Personality Disorders.

We continue to sit on the strategy board of NHFT’s Black, Minority and Ethnic work group ‘Moving Ahead’; this board looks at the inequalities within secondary mental health care and sets up task groups to work towards system change. This has led to the following work streams being actioned; > Development and delivery of new equality training for NHS staff > Service User Involvement - Training service users to be a part of the project, both delivering training and being lay advisers, > Community engagement events focusing on how to access mental health services > Setting up a Cultural Awareness tool for all NHS staff > Gathering data sets of inpatient demographics – leading to system one changes (NHS IT system).

Going forward there is planned a research paper in understanding why a high proportion of the BME population are hospitalized, and how much self stigma plays a part in the reluctance of BME individuals to use mental health services.

We are members of the Northamptonshire Mental Health Transformation board which is hosted by Nene Clinical Commissioning

Group, and work at a strategic level to scrutinise mental health pathways within health. The board bring together lead staffing from around the county including, Northamptonshire Health Foundation Trust, NHS , Nene Clinical Commissioning, Public Health, Primary Care leads, Secondary care commissioners, and the Third Sector. The board has an over arching term of reference to bring changes to the system to improve all aspect of mental health care for the wider community, and scrutinises any changes that are being implemented. The board has also: > Tendered and Funded new developments in post-partum psychosis care. Which includes a dedicated bed for mothers with post part psychosis within the maternity ward, this is in place of being transferred to a psychiatric unit. > Set up working groups for; Crisis Care Concordat, Crisis Pathway, Depression Pathway, and a review of patients under section 117.

Each of our services has undergone a review, collating service outcome, monitoring information and feedback. Over all, individuals are happy with our services but these reviews have highlighted areas of development that included; updates to referral system, layouts of service user documents and records, and changes to the way we process client data. Going forward we will be developing the reviews to enable more formal reports to be completed, enabling them to be used by other Minds in the network.

We successfully completed the Mind Quality Mark. The review team reported constructively about changes that were needed and theses were worked on to satisfy the team to pass this round of Quality, and highlighted that Wellingborough Minds is an asset to the Mind network “punching above its weight”.

We reviewed and updated the way we report financially to the board, improving the information enables them to make a more informed decisions, and to be able to better scrutinise the finances of the charity. This also supports the board to comply with both the Charity Commission guidelines and our Mind Quality Management system.

A full redesign of our financial sustainability plan for our services was completed and has enabled our services to continue within the planned projection, and has ensured that the services that may have been at risk have not closed. We planned in a three year period of growth for 2018-21 with an aim of some services becoming fully sustainable by the end of 2019. Financial Reports Legal and Administrative Information
