SRO Artists, Inc. http://www.sroartists.com | [email protected] PHONE: (608) 664.8160 FAX: (608) 664.8161 ARTIST BIO: KARLA BONOFF (revised 11/2010) p. 1 of 2 Born and raised in Southern California, Karla Bonoff was a songwriter by the age of fifteen. She and her sister Lisa were writing songs and playing as a duo titled "The Daughters of Chester P" named after their father, Dr. Chester Paul Bonoff. She had already fallen in love with the guitar and studied with Frank Hamilton of the famous folk group, The Weavers. By 16, Karla and her sister Lisa auditioned for Elektra Records. An 11-song demo [recorded by Doors' engineer Bruce Botnick] was recorded but no deal came of this first effort. Karla's sister became a teacher of history and religion, but Karla's passion was always music. She became friends with other singer-songwriters and musicians [in the '60s] who were creating their own unique sound. She talks about lining up at the legendary Troubadour at noon on Mondays to get a slot in the famous Monday night Troubadour "hoot," which was a breaking ground for many artists who went on to great success. She says, "It was an amazing time. Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Elton John were around the Troubadour in those days." There were some other writer-singers who became friends of Karla's, and eventually, they decided to put a band together. They were Kenny Edwards, (who had started the Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt and Bobby Kimmel), Wendy Waldman, and Andrew Gold.

Lawrence The JPAS production of Footloose will be using a modified version of the script. As the original version of the script contains profanity, we have chosen to adapt it for our audiences. As there has been some controversy in other parts of the country regarding the modification of the Footloose script, particularly around the removal of profanity, we felt it important to provide an analysis of this controversy. This analysis is included in the section A History of the Play. One of the most electrifying movie musicals bursts onto the JPAS stage with exhilarating results! Life in small town Bomont is peaceful until big City boy Ren arrives.

Copyright by Stephen Schwartz 2010 all rights reserved. No part of this content may be reproduced without prior written consent, including copying material for other websites. Feel free to link to this archive. Send questions to [email protected] Section 1 – Early life Childhood Question: Did you make up songs all the time as a kid? Answer from Stephen Schwartz: The first song I can remember writing was for a puppet show my sister and Iput on when I was about seven years old. It was called "Little Lullaby", and if I remember correctly, the show was entitled HI, DOG. I think the plot concerned a dog that ran away from home. I actually still remember the tune of "Little Lullaby", but I have been wise enough not to use it in later projects. Fascination with Magic Question: Magic seems to be a subject you are fascinated with. "The Magic Show" of course but also "Magic to Do" from Pippin and the song Prestidigitation. Care to comment on the attraction? Answer from Stephen Schwartz: As a kid, I always liked magic. It was theatrical, and it was an intellectual challenge to try to figure out how seemingly impossible things were accomplished. I think maybe subconsciously I was hoping there would turn out to be such a thing as "real" magic.
